About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

In Love With Things in General and Happy to Be Working - Wednesday, February 28, 1962

I have my French done and letters written to the folks and Grandma and Grandpa. Now to study my anatomy bone parts and read more of The Inferno - no, it's kind of late for that if I intend to get up for breakfast. I'm really in love with things in general. I've never been so happy at college as I have since I began working. I handed in my first work sheet. I should be getting about $39.00 in a few days. Gee! I'm glad I earn my pay. Some of the workers I don't think do. "T'were it Leap Year I'd make the big leap."!!

Dr. Paul Weiss, Professor of Philosophy at Yale, is on Campus - Tuesday, February 27, 1962

I must settle down with my studies. If one goes well, another doesn't. I did a terrible job on an anatomy lab pop quiz. We had as assembly speaker "the keynote speaker of the year," Dr. Paul Weiss. professor of philosophy at Yale University, who's on campus until Thursday. What opportunities I've had this year! I studied at the library with Marge and Judy. I left my class ring in my shorts pocket in my gym locker. It's like losing my right arm. I like the song "Blue Water Line" - I've been listening to my transistor more lately.

Sliding on Ice and Falling Down on Our Way to Classes - Monday, February 26, 1962

It was really slippery out today. Everyone had to slide to all of their classes. It's a wonder kids didn't get hurt more when they fell. I guess a few ended up going to the health center and Nancy Taylor had to go to the North Kansas City Hospital about her elbow. I started working in the attic and with the bindery shelf and bound volumes at the library this afternoon. I got a C on my music test. Margaret, Sharon and I made a trip to Parkville when music class got out early. I got some Project Mercury commemoratives.

A Wiener Roast in the Meetin' House - Sunday, February 25, 1962

The LLCs had a wiener roast party in the Meetin' House so we got out of sack suppers. It was a lot of fun. Wiener roasts are good things, always so basically alike, yet they all have their differences and unusual things. Then we went to the show, "A Raisin in the Sun." It concerned a Chicago Negro family and was real good. We got out too late to go to Woodward's open house. It's so icy out we would have broken our necks getting over there. Sleepy Hollow [Hawley's third floor women] gave a dorm party tonight.

Recruited to Watch the OAC Show a Second Time - Saturday, February 24, 1962

I went to the OAC Show again tonight as one of Fred Kieslar's "recruits" to "help the audience along" by laughing at all the funny parts. It's harder than I thought to laugh at the same thing a second time. They had some of their technical difficulties worked out tonight. I still don't give vent to my feelings enough in my diary. I have been shutting my life apart from God. I've been all keyed up practically since the day I go to college I bet. I like college yet I find myself looking forward to summer vacation. Sometimes I'm not sure of myself.

Laughing the Whole Way Through the OAC Show About Park - Friday, February 23, 1962

The OAC Show tonight was really good. It was a sort of a ______ (gosh, as an "English major" I can't even think of the word) on Park College. I laughed the whole way through. We had snow, rain and sleet today. I've heard at least five different ideas as to what the "unknown"music selection was on our music test - so?! We had a nice little pop quiz in anatomy, the results of which were probably enough to slay Mr. Hearson; no one was prepared. I had glanced at it ahead of time.

Invited to Woodward's First Open House in 23 Years - Thursday, February 22, 1962

This has been quite a night. Woodward has just come through the dorm inviting us to their first open house in 23 years. Just before that second floor gave a party for third and fourth with cherry pie and entertainment for Washington's Birthday. Now I've got to study for my music test. Dean White "talked me out of" the $200 teacher aid for next year since it's only my mother who teaches - we wondered about that last year. I guess she thinks our income doesn't need to be supplemented by financial aid.

My Mother's Thesis Will Be Basis for Article in Arithmetic Teacher - Wednesday, February 21, 1962

Tonight I have written home and done my French. Now I better try to finish The Sound of Roland before I'm sunk. Mom has been asked by the editor of Arithmetic Teacher to write an article for the October issue. The editor, from the State College of Iowa, was in Washington County as a mathematics consultant. I got a B- on my French test, the worst I've ever done on a French test. I got 71, about average, on the anatomy test.

Col. John Glenn Completes Three Orbits of the Earth - Tuesday, February 20, 1962

This has been a day to remember. Colonel John Glenn orbited the Earth three times today in the United States' first orbital space flight. The J. R. was full of people watching television when the rocket ship lifted smoothly off the pad at Cape Canaveral about 8:45 this morning. Tonight I was privileged to hear "one of the best vocal organizations in the whole wide world," the Robert Shaw Chorale as they presented Bach's "The Passion According to St. John" at the Kansas City Music Hall.

Most Thought Anatomy Test Was Bad - Monday, February 19, 1962

Everybody's tired. And it's only Monday. Why don't I do all my way-behind work? Why don't I make the dean's list this semester? I wrote a letter to Mary Brown. My Valentine to Jerolyn was returned. Evidently she is no longer at her apartment in Iowa City. Most kids thought the anatomy test was pretty bad. I didn't think it was too bad. Tomorrow is a French test. I think I'll look over the lessons and go to bed a little earlier than usual. Just so I don't get back into my old habit of going to bed without enough work ahead done.

Nine of Us Attend Universal Day of Prayer for Students Service - Sunday, February 18, 1962

Today's studying time was spent in preparation for tomorrow's anatomy test. It was cold today. At 6:00 this morning Marge and I went to the Universal Day of Prayer for Students service in the chapel. Only about nine showed up. I wrote a letter to Phyllis. Jim spoke to me at supper - concerning the "hopeless" ketchup bottles. I hadn't even realized he was standing beside me. I played Hearts on the new round card table in the lounge with Marge, Judy and Carolyn.

President Finds Us Peeking at Dancing - Saturday, February 17, 1962

I got my photo reprints and a letter from Pat in the mail. The reprints are the best so far from the three companies I've tried. I wrote another  round robin letter to send to Mary Ellen. Vivien and I went down to peek through the lounge door window at the dancing tonight and who should catch us in the act but the president of the college! Quite a few of us didn't go to the party. I did French at the library this afternoon while Marge read her anthropology. Flo trimmed my hair some tonight.

Chimes Have Been Playing Park's "Alma Mater" - Friday, February 16, 1962

This has been a fast week. Here it is another weekend so soon and I must study, study, study. Some of us went swimming tonight. It was colder again today. The chimes have been playing more often recently. We've even had Park's "Alma Mater" played. Vivien is practicing some of her apparatus class exercises. I should do them, too. I thought about asking Jim Peeke to the Valentine dance tomorrow night but for some reason I didn't. Maybe by the St. Patrick's Day dance I'll have more nerve.

Lowell-Lucerne Club Initiation was Held Tonight - Thursday, February 15, 1962

After chapel I went downtown to see if my pictures were back. They were. I entered two of the black and white  snow scenes along with the colored pictures of the chapel and our room in the public affairs office contest for view book pictures. Dr. Hill [last semester's speech professor] drove me back up to campus. The LLCs initiation was tonight. It was a very impressive ceremony. We had to kneel before the table and repeat our oath. Then we signed our names with all the other Parkites who have belonged to Lowells or Lucernes.

Sarita Penick Shows Her Slides of Paris - Wednesday, February 14, 1962

Today I ambitiously got up at 5:30 just long enough to find out that the orbital trip had been postponed again, attended all my classes (I've never missed one yet), wrote my letter home, worked from 2:00 to 5:15 and studied on the job, got dressed up for supper (dress-up night), went to "Le Cercle Francais" in Copley lounge to see Sarita Penick's slides of Paris, and did my usual laborious French assignment. Now the reward of each day: sleep!

Mom's Letter from Home Says They are Selling the Milk Cows - Tuesday, February 13, 1962

Dearing has issued Hawley an invitation to watch Astronaut Glenn go around the world if he goes in the morning. The last I heard it is 50-50 that he is going. It was getting cooler today after our third nice day. I got my letter from home today - a day early. They are selling the milk cows. That is going to seem strange - all those milking chores we've done for years. I only got an 81 on my anatomy term test. I knew I hadn't done very well, but at least I got an A on my French test. I'm doing all right so far in the anatomy lab.

Five of Us Have Cake and Fruit Cocktail with Merry Lee - Monday, February 12, 1962

Here I've spent all evening doing French. This year it's French that demands all my time, last year, chemistry and the year before, geometry. I wish I had time to think over what I've learned some time. How will I ever get everything done in later years of college! I do think there's something to the fact that the busier you are the more you can do. Merry Lee treated five us to cake and fruit cocktail tonight. This  was another wonderful day. Mary Ellen wrote saying she'd never gotten the round robin. I know I mailed it way back in November.

Dr. Hauptmann was Chapel Service Speaker This Morning - Sunday, February 11, 1962

This was our second beautiful Sunday in a row. I wrote on three Valentines, a letter to Vivian Pavlis, and a letter to Arizona State University about a contest on meteorite research that I saw on a bulletin board in Mackay. After supper (at which time Marge, Flo and I made a funny face from our [weekly Sunday night supper] paper sacks and propped it by the trash boxes) we walked around campus taking in the beautiful evening air. Dr. Hauptmann spoke in chapel this morning. I'm finally getting back to The Song of Roland and I've got to read Dante's Inferno.

Second Floor Wins Room Inspection for the First Time - Saturday, February 10, 1962

I get to be in LLCs. So does Marge. Some of us went to The Honeymoon Machine and Picnic tonight. Picnic wasn't very good. I went to the library this afternoon and got my French and part of my anatomy done. Vivien came this morning to help clean up the room. Second floor won room inspection this week for the first time. Viv is back at the White House tonight.

Basketball Games with Bible and MacMurray - Friday, February 9, 1962

Tonight I went to the basketball games with Terry Seelye. The B team beat Bible College and the varsity got beat by MacMurray College. They had quite a way to come if they came all the way from Jacksonville, Il. I bet it's been quite a while since anyone was paid 75 cents an hour for reading Park College Alumniads. I finished with the magazines early so gleaned some interesting Park news since nothing was going on in the library this rainy afternoon anyway.

The Park President's Family Goes to Chicago - Thursday, February 8, 1962

So far I'm still alive. If I get prepared for and pass my two tests tomorrow I'll be mighty happy by this time tomorrow night, only I hope to be in bed by this time. It's going to seem funny around here tonight. Vivien is staying with Antionette at the President's house while they are in Chicago over the weekend and Marge went up to the health center this afternoon. We finished with lab early so I worked my hour and fifteen minutes from 3:15 to 4:30. I went to the LLC supper tonight.

Serenading New Students with the LLCs Social Club - Wednesday, February 7, 1962

I can see myself dead from homework! I mustn't let my French slide. I've just got to get at that Lafayette booklet - I've got two chapters to go, plus finding out what it's saying before our test Friday. I think the 11:00 class will be better. Tonight Marge and I got our first taste of the LLCs by serenading the new students with them. They're sure a nice bunch. I wish I would have joined them in the first place. I've been on the go all day as usual. I don't waste much time any more. I'm so stiff from phys ed.

Free Exercises, Rope Jumping in Apparatus; Diffusion, Osmosis in Anatomy - Tuesday, February 6, 1962

This has been a busy day. I found out that Dr. Hampl would like for me to change to the 11:00 French class - I jumped at the chance. No more first hour classes every day. In apparatus we did free exercises, rope jumping, checking for balance and so forth. We did diffusion and osmosis experiments in anatomy lab (I had to hurry there from phys ed). It was just like good old high school chemistry lab. Marge and I both made recollections. I've been doing homework in every spare minute. Kathy, Becky and I were having quite a time after supper with some of the foreign students from Persia, Lebanon and Japan.

Second Floor Girls Have Maintained a 2.0 Average - Monday, February 5, 1962

We were given 10:00 extended hours tonight by Dean White. Eight freshman girls made the Dean's List and six of them are from second floor. We have a good 2.0 floor average. [Park graded on a scale where 3.0 was the top (A) grade.] I'm getting tired of French. We're going pretty fast and I can't let it slide. This week they're having the Rush Week club suppers for the new students. I've handed in my request to change social clubs. I want to join the LLCs with my free change. It was colder today.

Falling Springs Will Be a Fond Memory of Park - Sunday, February 4, 1962

Falling Springs will always be one of my fond memories of Park College. On this beautiful Sunday afternoon ten of us girls walked up to Alfalfa Point and on over to the springs. The water was really rushing over the falls today. Bob Lastick with his bow and arrows and John McQuade with his guitar came over after we got there. They had seen us on our way over. Terry Wang and Ken Ruth came down, too. It was almost too gorgeous a day to study. We had blankets on Hawley's front lawn for a while and did a little studying out there.

A Fabulous, Beautiful Day in Kansas City and at Park - Saturday, February 3, 1962

This afternoon Marge and I went in to Kansas City from 1:00 to 4:00. I bought a tan purse and matching shoestring belt. This was truly a fabulous day - 65 beautiful degrees or more. Trench coats were plenty - you could go without a coat if you wanted to. Marge and I went over to sit on Mackay steps tonight and watched the sunset and listened to the chimes.

Groundhog's Shadow, Magazine Stacks and Gone With the Wind - Friday, February 2, 1962

The groundhog had a beautiful day today. I'm afraid he saw his shadow, although it was cloudy at first this morning. Gee, February 2nd already. I'm starving, but I'd just as soon sleep as eat. Barb Page and I went to see Gone With the Wind tonight. I got more out of it the second time. I got quite a lot done at the library. I even got back to my straightening and dusting of the magazine stacks.

Almost Locked in the Library - Thursday, February 1, 1962

I'm really going to be busy this semester even if I just have 15 hours. They will amount to about what I had last semester. We didn't have lab this afternoon. I probably could have gone to work early this afternoon but decided not to confuse anyone by doing so. I about got locked in the library this evening. Patty Pence going out the front door and Miss Fishburn and Mr. Jones going out the back door all thought I was at the opposite door. President Morrill spoke at assembly this morning. He called it the "Survival Assembly."
