About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Sleeping All Morning, Shopping This Afternoon, Chores This Evening - Saturday, March 31, 1962

I slept all morning (but not until after Phyllis brought me up some Swiss cheese at 4:45). This afternoon we went to town. I had quite a spring shopping spree - green and white plaid suit, aqua dress (they had to undress the window dummy) red and white striped long "twist" blouse, white pleated skirt and tan hopsack tennis shoes. Ann and I went out to do the eggs and get the buckets ready. Grandma and Grandpa are on a trip to Ohio and Virginia. Chores are simple without the cows.

Home Again and We Are Our Usual Laughing Family of Six - Friday, March 30, 1962

(Written Saturday morning) - Home again. The train was just an hour late again. I went in to the station with Liz Ralston, her mother and her grandfather. The anatomy test wasn't too hard. We're our usual laughing family of six again. It doesn't seem possible that I was in Kansas City such a short time ago. An Oskaloosa girl who goes to Central College in MacPherson, Kansas also got off the train at Fairfield.

Religion in Life: John Fry, Presbyterian Life Editor - Thursday, March 29, 1962

One thing for sure, we are certainly taking spring vacation more matter-of-factly than we did Christmas vacation. It doesn't seem possible that it's here. I remember how far away it looked on the year's calendar of events. John Fry, an associate editor of Presbyterian Life, is on campus for Religion and Life Week. He had a good discussion in the lounge tonight and a good assembly speech. I got $33.60 for March through the 26th. Another rainy day following a beautiful one. It's happened at least three times. Now anatomy test preparation.

Skipping Music Class Causes Me to Feel More Collegiate - Wednesday, March 28, 1962

I'm getting more collegiate every day. I skipped my first class all year today. We didn't have to go to music appreciation unless we had questions about the Baroque so I decided I'd go to work early this lovely spring day. We haven't had very big French assignments since we started the new book. It's so nice. I should have gone to the Meetin' House tonight to hear an editor of  Presbyterian Life. Oh well, I'll hear him tomorrow.

Basketball, Questions for the President and Nighttime Conversation - Tuesday, March 27, 1962

It was I who recruited enough girls to play basketball tonight. We really got our teamwork going and came out with 13 points against the OACs' 30 or so. I ran the clock and Regina kept score for the LLC-OAC boys game which they also won. The president came over tonight to talk to the freshmen about questions we had. I wonder how soon Vivien and Regina will quit rattling so I can sleep. Such a nice day again.

Nickel Surprises Hawley With a Very Nice Outdoor Party - Monday, March 26, 1962

Nickel surprised Hawley tonight with a very nice party. Good old Nickel, nonetheless. We cooked hot dogs over the outdoor fireplace and danced on the patio. They forgot to bring Dammit [their dog] along. The paper didn't turn up. I asked Carolyn today and she said he did ask for me, so at least it's not quite as remote. I've had a crack on the bottom of my toe bothering all day. The tests I got back today gave me a mid-term B in French and  a C in anatomy.

A Confusing Phone Call About Typing a Paper - Sunday, March 25, 1962

I think I may have goofed. I had a call on the pay phone tonight, the first line of the conversation being, "Do you know anyone who could type a paper?" He said he'd send it with someone from Waids [restaurant] who could leave it at Hawley. I don't remember the name (from Park Hill) and I bet he doesn't know mine unless he happened to see my bid sometime!?!?? The LLCs lost to the ACCs. I made two of our three points. We went swimming afterwards and then Regina taught me how to bowl. We had an excellent sermon this morning.

A Group of Us Get the Canoe Trip at the WUS Auction - Saturday, March 24, 1962

WUS was really a ball. We got our canoe trip - Judy X., Marge, Nancy, Linda Keith, Flo, Judy Cox and I - for $55.00. It will be sponsored by Dr. Radloff and Dr. Gaeddert. The auction was still going at 1:00 and had cleared over $1000.00. I caught the ACC greased pig and won a plastic pig bank. At the steak dinner Marge and I sat with the Gaedderts. They are such a nice family. Poor Mackay's chimes have been off the beam tonight. The LLC general store was real nice.

"Breakfast at Tiffany's" Was a Good Show About New York - March 23, 1962

"Breakfast at Tiffany's" was a good show, especially the yellow cat that looked exactly like our family's old Tarzan. Now I don't need to go to New York. We got a pretty good view of Broadway and Central Park. I got the round robin that I had to start up again after something happened to the last one. About the French test, uh! Gee, these fast weeks. They go by like - . College really is one big ball. I wouldn't trade a college education for anything.

Removing Frog Muscles and Recording Contractions - Thursday, March 22, 1962

I now must spend two good hours studying for my French test. I want to make an A on this one. I finished work in time to play the last half of the LLC-LEC basketball game. We lost 36-5! I played guard. Why do I always have to be on the losing basketball team? In lab we removed the gastrocnemieus muscle of a frog leg and recorded the contractions on a kymograph. We started from scratch, including the live frogs. I did the wheelbarrow the length of the gym! I've really improved some of my muscles anyway.

A WUS Bid to Type 20 Pages for Another Student - Wednesday, March 21, 1962

French took a long time. I did it first and then wrote my letter home. I put up a bid for WUS that says: "Have Typewriter, Will Type One Paper (Limit 20 Pages) - Typing time must include weekend or five days prior to paper deadline. Experience includes typing an M.A. thesis." Marge and I thought about putting up a bid for two guys to go kite flying at Alfalfa Point. Then we were sort of reconsidering and some of the other girls stole our idea. That's the way it goes I guess. I'm changing the magazine rack labels in the library.

Rain, a Pizza, a Smorgasbord and an Anatomy Lab Grade - Tuesday, March 20, 1962

It rained all day - it seems like half of our most beautiful days are followed by plain rainy days. Marge and I made my pizza tonight instead of going to supper. Vivien and Regina (Marge said Regina invited herself) went to a smorgasbord with Charlie and his father so we didn't have to worry much about sharing it with anyone. I have a C+ (two points from a B and 17 points from an A) for anatomy lab mid-term.

Dr. Hauptmann and Mr. Mitchell Answer Questions in Debate Form - Monday, March 19, 1962

Was this ever a beautiful day. It really went right to the heart. It got up as high as 77 and was 66 at supper time. Tonight Dr. Hauptmann and Mr. Mitchell answered political and social questions in debate form in Alumni. It was very interesting to listen to them. I'd have courses under both of them if I'd taken political science and anthropology. We're on the last lesson in our French book. I took five pictures outside before music class. The LLCs had a basketball game which they lost. I can't play in the 4:00 games because of work. Dean White said I don't have to stay for next Saturday's world lit class.

Arts and Culture Movie "Bridge to the Sun" Was Good - Sunday, March 18, 1962

I just made my date bars and am waiting for them to cool so we can eat them. I did French this afternoon. Tonight I hope my anatomy sinks in for the test tomorrow. The arts and culture movie, "Bridge to the Sun," was real good. There was such a nice spring evening feel out after the movie. The white fluffy clouds were against the gray sky and it had just rained. This would have been a good day or weekend to go out to the pasture at home. Gee, two weeks till my first college spring vacation.

The St. Patrick's Day House Party Tonight Was Fabulous - Saturday, March 17, 1962

The house party was simply fabulous. Roger was so nice. He brought me a corsage. It was a green colored orchid. He didn't need to do that. At present a few of us on the clean-up committee are in the midst of putting things back in order. Our rainbow out in front looked real nice as did the lounge decorations. I spent all day with house party preparations - as did almost everyone. Oh, it was all so sharp. I'm really glad I asked someone, especially a boy as nice as Roger.

Dr. Hilty's Play, a Party and Practicing Apparatus Stunts - Friday, March 16, 1962

Tonight I went to see Dr. Hilty's play, "Indian Campground," with Bonnie, Judy Jones and Patty. It was so good. I really liked it. It took place in a Missouri farm house and the theme evolved around some love letters written shortly after the Civil War. Then we went to the LLC St. Patrick's Day - Lowell volleyball victory party at the Meetin' House. It was real nice. This morning I got a hold of the spotlight for tomorrow night from Maintenance. After supper Viv and I did apparatus stunts on mattresses in the hall. I learned to do the dive -over two people, too.

Acting Silly Rather Than Studying - Thursday, March 15, 1962

The dorm just had a "Cape Canaveral" type "countdown" using the phone on each floor to coordinate it and on the final count and phone ring everyone slammed their doors. They had done it just on second last year and Mom Hawkins' pen went flying across her paper. This year she dropped a cup! The practical anatomy test on the bones had a few tricky ones that I got mixed up. Today was UN Model Assembly Day for high school students. I'm pooped - we just snake danced through the dorm and then put the counselors in the showers. I'm almost weak!

At Home We Get a New 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air - Wednesday, March 14, 1962

I have just spent exactly two hours on French. The trouble is, I didn't get started till five after 10:00. I wrote home tonight and then went to the anatomy lab for a while to study the bones. I had to go around to the side and yell at them through the window to come and let me in. We got a new car at home, gee! A green Chevrolet Bel Air 1962! Our last "new" car was the 1949 Dodge. Our others have been used cars.

Senate Candidate Crosby Kemper Spoke in Assembly - Tuesday, March 13, 1962

I asked Roger Rikkola to to the Hawley house party Saturday evening. Our assembly speaker this morning was Crosby Kemper, Republican candidate for US Senator from Missouri. If he becomes president some day I'll have seen him! That reminds me, I ought to see if I could see former President Truman at Independence. We went upstairs in the gym to have more mat space, barbells and equipment for apparatus class. It was like an attic on a rainy day. Phyllis, Virginia and Ann are having tumbling and apparatus, too.

Humor in Anatomy Class About the Skeleton Being a Girls Basketball Player - Monday, March 12, 1962

We had a house meeting tonight about bids for the WUS auction. The WUS entertainment sounds like it's really a lot of fun. I did French and anatomy at the library tonight. I thought maybe for once I was coming out on the long end of time but now I see it's the short end again. I about died laughing over Mr. Hearson's joke about the skeleton in the classroom being made from different people unless she was a girls basketball player and Doug Meng saying Mr. Hearson was going to wear shorts and put numbers on his legs so we could name the articulations.

LLCs Discuss a General Store and a "Dunk the Professor" Tank - Sunday, March 11, 1962

Three cheers for me! I have finished The Decameron. Now by the time I read my anatomy I can go to bed feeling justified that I've done a reasonable amount of homework for one evening, though maybe not for the weekend. The LLCs had a meeting this afternoon. As we hashed over whether to have a general store and/or a "dunk the professor" tank I kept thinking what a nice bunch these kids are. As part of the decorations committee for the house party Karen Lewis and I are in charge of making a rainbow.

Rain, Shopping in Kansas City and an SNEA Sponsored Movie - Saturday, March 10, 1962

Oh, the beautiful pit-a-pat of rain! Against the window. I sing as I write this down. Margaret and I went to Kansas City this afternoon. I got a pair of tennis shoes, a pin bonnet, post cards, film and flash bulbs, hose and socks. Flo and I went to the SNEA sponsored movie, "At War With the Army," tonight at the Meetin' House, but it wasn't very good.

Tonight's Entertainment is Dancing the Twist at a Party in Upper Commons - Friday, March 9, 1962

Tonight's entertainment was a party in Upper Commons. The dance, the Twist, is quite the rage. I can't do it myself. I got my prize money this morning. They're going to be able to return the pictures after all. Maybe I could turn in a few more, as I was told they'd be glad to have them. It was nice to be able to sleep late since we didn't have anatomy class. Of course Vivien forgot and yelled did I oversleep even though I'd told her I could sleep late. Music class was dismissed early because the record player cut up during "A Mighty Fortress is Our God."

A $5.00 Prize in Photo Contest Religion Category - Thursday, March 8, 1962

I won a prize ($5.00) in the Public Relations Office photo contest. Sharon Fritts and one of the foreign students also won. My name was listed under category 4, so they must have used my chapel picture as the religious one. Sarita Penick was here tonight. She really had some funny experiences in France. The French test wasn't bad. Dr. Hilty didn't get there for world lit so that gave me an extra hour to study French. They've had snow on the the ground at home for 90 days - a record.

Vivien's Parents Were Here Tonight on Their Way to Iowa City - Wednesday, March 7, 1962

Vivien's parents were here tonight on their way to Iowa City. Dr. Nix wants to see about enrollment procedures at SUI. Vivien thought just her dad was coming, so it was a real surprise when Mrs. Nix opened our door. I didn't get a letter from home. Shoot! I have a French test tomorrow. I don't know where the evening has gone. Nancy Ayers and I went over French vocabulary but I should have spent more time with it. Mr. Hearson said after his lecture today, "I hate to do this to you, but take out a piece of paper." As we all feared the quiz he said, "Now write this down so you won't forget it: there will be no class Friday!"

Read About Wilbur West's Death in Kansas City Star - Tuesday, March 6, 1962

French all night again - this doesn't sound good. Well, I do mean all evening. As yet I haven't resigned myself to staying up all night the way so many do at times. I had an odd experience this afternoon at the library. I was glancing at The Kansas City Star when I saw the headline, "Two Killed in Truck Accident." The subheading was "Victims are Wilbur Wade West of West Chester, Iowa and _____ of Carthage, Mo." It was the strangest feeling. He was evidently going home with his truck last night about 7:20. It was south of Lee's Summit. The president answered questions at assembly.

Tonight Two Men Will Be on Lookout for Prowler - Monday, March 5, 1962

Back to the daily, fast passing week routine of classes, work and study plus doing things "on the run" in between. They still haven't caught he prowler although reports are that he's been seen or heard every night. Tonight we're having two men in each back side end room and they'll have a walkie-talkie. Last night Nickel was our guard. Mom Hawkins just came past. I told her I wasn't concerned (about the prowler). She said I looked so nice yesterday in my magenta dress. We had an LLC meeting tonight about our WUS booth.

Lucerne Freshman Girls Sponsor Rose Tea - Sunday, March 4, 1962

The Lucerne freshman girls sponsored the Rose Tea for the senior women, faculty wives and house mothers this afternoon in Hawley Lounge. It was so nice. The Lucernes are really a nice bunch of girls - so quiet and considerate. Flo, Bonnie and I went to the Chamber Orchestra Spring Concert at 4:00. I wrote up a report to get extra credit for music class. It was snowing some on our way to the "spring" concert.

Terry Fixes My Hair and it Gets Comments - Saturday, March 3, 1962

I've just spent a great Saturday at Park College. After the world lit test (on which I think I did okay) I went down to the gift shop and got Virginia a bracelet for her birthday. The lady wrapped it so I mailed it. After dinner Margie and I went down again and I bought a kite and some string. We're going to fly it from Alfalfa Point. Terry fixed my hair and I've had so many comments on it. Tonight Viv and I went to "The Parent Trap" and then I went with Patty Dewing to the basketball game. We won, and George Horneker made a real long shot at the ending buzzer to end Park's 1962 basketball season on a happy note!!

Tracks in Snow, Noises and a Man Running Bring Two Policemen to Dorm - Friday, March 2, 1962

I've had to spend Friday night studying world lit. Hope it pays off at least a little. Quite a few were around the dorm tonight. We had some excitement last night. Tracks in the snow, noises and an open side door in the past days have indicated someone has been prowling around the dorm at night. Last night when some of the girls were investigating noises they heard while in the lounge, Donna Marshall looked out the door and saw a man. He ran. Tonight we're going to have two policemen keep watch from second floor's store room.

Paul Weiss Lectures on "God and Common Sense" in Chapel - Thursday, March 1, 1962

March again already. Oh, these passing years! And Carlyn and I saw a robin when we were coming back from work - right out here by Hawley. We've had on campus since Tuesday through today the speaker of the year, Dr. Paul Weiss, a professor of philosophy at Yale. He talked today on "God and Common Sense" in chapel. He was to autograph books for those who wanted him to in the bookstore. We just had a house meeting about our house party, women's judicial council, and questions to ask the president.
