About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Lowells Win Soccer Game, Everything is Summer Green - Monday, April 30, 1962

I guess I'll sleep in Margie's room tonight to give her some peace of mind since the prowler may be back. A few of us were down cheering for the Lowells tonight in the soccer game. We beat the Lances 3-2! I'm afraid Hal Henderson thought I was losing my mind cheering so loud. This was a cool rainy day. I think we had a week of spring and now everything is summer green. Oh, it's too beautiful for words.

Saw Chamber Concert and "The Last Bridge" - Sunday, April 29, 1962

I guess I took in every event listed on the Spring Festival program. This afternoon Margaret and I went to the fourth (summer) chamber orchestra concert. Then Judy, Bonnie and I went back to see the movie, "The Last Bridge." It was in German and the English words were printed on the bottom. At first it seemed strange but then you forgot you were even reading - it was a good movie. I sunbathed on the lawn for two hours. I got a little tan. Vivien stayed with Sarita Penick last night. Nancy Kelley and Ken Peterson got married yesterday.

A Dance Date With a High School Senior - Saturday, April 28, 1962

A lot has happened this Spring Festival day and night. After the Narva queen crowning (Cathy McWilliams), Barbara Walker (whom I have only known by face) came along and asked me if I'd like to go to the Spring Festival dance with her friend from Bartlesville, Oklahoma, who's coming to Park next year. I accepted and met him this evening - Jim Hunter. He's a real nice boy. He drove up to Park so had a car. We got the wrong country club (across the road), a real swank place (!), decided it wasn't ours, and met Jim Peeke and Linda Lehman and their double also coming to the wrong one. (Wish I'd have written more about J.P. since February. I think we still like each other - gosh, we both go to the dance with someone else --.) Nickel won the soccer game, and they had a scrumptious open house - their first in ten years.

Folk Singing With Professional Psaltery Player - Friday, April 27, 1962

Dearing's open house was tonight, followed by an Italian street dance. Before that was folk singing in the Meetin' House led by a man who is supposedly the only professional psaltery player in the world and his wife. After I got back from work and before supper Vivien and I went for a walk below Herr House and the hill above the river. It rained today and everything was so pretty. I slipped and rolled down the hill in front of Herr House.

Movie "Exodus" is Shown to Start Off Spring Festival Weekend - Thursday, April 26, 1962

Margie and I went to "Exodus" tonight. It was real good and different - a movie that didn't really "end," just stopped. I'll have to read the book. They showed it tonight to start off the Spring Festival Weekend. I really yelled at Marge in anatomy lab - I don't know if it's a laughing or crying matter. She said I was worrying about my quiz grade, I said I wasn't, she said I was so, and then I lost my temper and yelled, "I am NOT!" and I'm afraid the "NOT" was pretty loud! Everyone looked and Mr. Hearson said, "Let's remember this is a college laboratory."

Getting a Sunburn or Tan Has Not Been an Option For Me - Wednesday, April 25, 1962

I finished Phil's paper sooner than I thought I would tonight. It was nine pages - $2.25. Boy, did she ever give us a big French assignment. I wrote my letter home this afternoon in the library so I wouldn't have that to do tonight. Margie had me send home for a long blouse - hers will be blue and white stripes. I wonder how many more orders I'll have to take! So many of the girls are getting sunburns and tans. I haven't had any chances to be out sunbathing. Every afternoon is filled solid for me.

Playing Basketball, Typing a Paper and Questioning Feelings - Tuesday, April 24, 1962

Here I am again doing things I probably shouldn't be as an average student - playing basketball and typing a political science paper for Phil Wheeler. I almost don't think the basketball score should be recorded. It probably is one of history's all time worst! (ACCs - 62, LLCs - 0.) I wish I could come to know myself. Why do I have to be cranky? Will I ever make a wife and mother? Why don't I pray oftener? For what am I waiting?

Spring Has Popped and Redbud Trees Are Worthy of a Colored Film - Monday, April 23, 1962

We think today was the day spring popped. The red bud is so pretty. I should have a colored film in my camera. There were almost as many magazines to check in today as there were the day after spring vacation. I got a nice letter from Phyllis. Junean won a four year college scholarship to State College of Iowa for sixth place in the Eastern Iowa Science Fair. I'm sending a post card to Mrs. Woodford to tell her I'll help with Bible School.

An Easter Sunrise Service Turns Into a Rain Storm - Sunday, April 22, 1962

My first Easter away from home proved enjoyable. Nancy Ayers and I got up at 4:30 to go up to Alfalfa Point for a sunrise service. However, just as we got there it began to pour. There were about 12 kids and President Morrill there. We decided to call it quits and move to the Meetin' House. Since we were so soaked Nancy and I came back here instead. I took a bath, reset my hair, and went back to bed for four hours. My Easter care package, a surprise from "Easter Bunny" Janet, and Commons candy and colored eggs make it seem like always. Judy Liddle's senior recital. Walking with Viv.

An Easter Care Package and Shopping in Kansas City - Saturday, April 21, 1962

I got an Easter care package today with food and my pictures that never came when I was at home. This afternoon I went to Kansas City, shopped around and came back on the 4:00 bus. I bought a pair of black Jamaicas and a white blouse trimmed with black rickrack. On the way home I sat with one of the English Language Institute students from Tokyo. They speak English so well for the short time they've been here. I saw the language institute yesterday. It's real modern on the inside.

Because of Good Friday There Were No Classes Today - Friday, April 20, 1962

This was Good Friday so we didn't have any classes. Becky, Josie and I hiked to Falling Springs this afternoon and came back by way of the highway. We tried flying my kite but the sticks broke so we left it on Alfalfa Point. We forgot about it until we were almost back. Becky may pick up the string if she goes back for some botany specimens. Tonight's entertainment included playing tennis and sitting in the J.R. with Tino and three upperclass kids. Fun - went over with Karen Garner.

Signing Up and Drawing for Rooms Next Year in Herr House - Thursday, April 19, 1962

We had room sign-ups for Herr House today. We wrote down our choices and then Dean White drew them and we got what we wanted in that order. The corner rooms went like hot cakes. Marge and I got our fourth choice, a beige room on the front side, when our card was finally drawn. I went to the Maundy Thursday communion service in chapel tonight. The electricity went off halfway through so it turned out to be candlelight. The campus looked so dark - the lights came back on in about fifteen minutes.

Grandma and Grandpa McDowell Stop on Way to Iowa - Wednesday, April 18, 1962

Grandma and Grandpa were here for a half hour at noon today. It worked out real well because I had just finished eating when I got a phone call in Commons saying they were here at Hawley. Grandma came up to the room, and then we drove over to Mackay and I showed them around a little bit. They really had a nice trip, it sounds like. They've been in 20 states and Washington, DC. Marge and I decided what rooms we'd like in Herr House. No one thinks they did very well on the anatomy test. I got a C on the music test.

Playing Basketball While Needing to Memorize Muscles for Anatomy Test - Tuesday, April 17, 1962

Tonight was a rip-roaring game with the PCCs. I fouled out followed by Regina which meant losing by forfeit - if only Betsy Franklin hadn't been in my way when I stood up after grabbing a loose ball - and I was trying to impress somebody! I've probably committed suicide by playing the game - I have 24 muscles to memorize by 9:00 tomorrow. My French tests are getting bad - and I don't know about world lit. Help! Field hockey should prove interesting.

We Have Another Unusual Basketball Game With the OACs - Monday, April 16, 1962

We had another unusual game with the OACs. We were ahead at the half but then they passed us up and were leading 32 to 14 in the last quarter when Cheryl Wiley elbowed me on a lay-up. Since they had only five players (Bev had gotten hurt) and it was Cheryl's fifth foul, it mean forfeiting the game - unless they take it before the WRA Council and find out otherwise. I have tests tomorrow in world lit and French. Grandma and Grandpa may be stopping this week on their way home. Some kids on a Presbyterian youth caravan are at Park.

Brass Quartet Music is Featured in a Student Performance - Sunday, April 15, 1962

I finally finished Book I of "Don Quixote." (By the way, I left it at home so Mom mailed it.) Now I'll have to hurry and skim over Book II. The test is Tuesday. I went to a concert this afternoon given by two music students assisted by Mr. Larson, Mr. Cormier, and Mike Lansdon - mostly brass quartet music. William Hilborn was there. We heard the first performance of a piece he wrote. Margie and I played with a football on the president's lawn this evening. We have an "art exhibition" in the john - things from Karen Lewis's walls.

Red and White Striped Blouse Causes "Double Takes" - Saturday, April 14, 1962

I don't think I've ever had as many comments on a single new item of clothing as I did on my long red and white striped blouse that I wore over my red Bermudas today. It just covered my shorts (which could be seen at the slits or when I was obliged to show that I did have something underneath!) so it caused quite a few "double takes!" I bought a pair of beautiful blue slacks for $4.50 (originally $12.95) from Donna Marshall. Marge has a vest of the exact same material and it makes a darling outfit. For all we know, they may have belonged together originally in Chicago! Judy, Carolyn and I didn't get to the egg hunt on time after our ride didn't come and we had trouble finding "East 6th Street!"

Confusing "Sanctus From a Mass" and "Fa Una Canzona" on Music Test - Friday, April 13, 1962

Mr. Larson's going to think I'm a good one when he sees my music test. I identified the first "known" as "Sanctus From a Mass" when it was actually "Fa Una Canzona." Other than that I may not have done too badly. I went to see "Come September" with Carolyn Frobig tonight. We finally got our anatomy tests back. I got an 84. Judy Percival just came in to ask me to help with a faculty children's Easter egg hunt tomorrow afternoon in Parkville. Sounds fun!

Sticking to a Study Schedule Tonight, Humor in the Gym Today - Thursday, April 12, 1962

I feel so proud of myself. I've stuck rather well today to a none too easy schedule - I have to give myself till 1:00 tonight to read about the Baroque period in my music book. It's 12:00 and I just finished my three anatomy experiments right on schedule. I listened to a little more music in the chapel tonight. We had an LLC-LEC game this afternoon. I guess we got eight points this time. That game was a riot. I had a nosebleed that took up the official time-out length, and two incidents bowled over every player on the floor laughing!

We Had 12:00 Hours Tonight Since There Are No Classes Tomorrow - Wednesday, April 11, 1962

No classes tomorrow because of Graduate Record Examinations for the seniors. We had 12:00 hours tonight. Ooh, I didn't do any homework tonight. Oh well, I guess a person should take it easy occasionally. I did accomplish some constructive things, vespers, French Circle, and finished typing Paul's paper. I'll get 75 cents for it. Dear Miss Hampl went into the "Men Only" section of the dorm tonight at French Circle. The three boys sat in the lounge crossing their fingers!

We Have a Planning Meeting About Our Canoe Trip - Tuesday, April 10, 1962

We just had a meeting - the seven of us who are taking the canoe trip. We think we'll go May 5 - if our sponsors   agree. Judy Jones and I listened to music records tonight. It was very amusing to to hear the different guys who came in talk about it. I actually made it half away across the ladder in apparatus class. I've been acting sort of crazy today - I guess I have spring fever. Nobody seems to object. We had a pop bottle quartet, marched, danced, played with the snake, had a duel, yakked like nuts, sang, laughed, etc. And I've had a sore throat all day.

Back in the Swing of Things, Late Hours for Watching Academy Awards - Monday, April 9, 1962

My job about wore me out today. I had all of last week's magazines to check in. There's still a big stack of old ones to put on the stacks. We stepped right back in to the swing of things today. I gave my talk on three of the muscles for anatomy class. We discussed Baroque music in class. We hadn't been having regular class meetings but had been studying on our own. Paul Heyden called me up tonight and wanted me to type a paper for him. This call didn't turn out to be as far-fetched as that other one! We have late hours for watching the Academy Awards tonight. I never have watched much of them.

We've Been Arriving Back on Campus All Day - Sunday, April 8, 1962

We've been arriving back on campus all day. I was the first one back to Hawley. Pat Frost and Judy X had been here all week. My train was right on time, but if I had waited till tomorrow it probably wouldn't have been. I didn't notice Fred Kieslar two seats in front of me till just before we got to KC. We split the price of a taxi to Park. I went down to Parkville Presbyterian Church this morning. Mom Hawkins had "fits" over my rubber snake. It's currently on Judy Percival's pillow - she hates snakes with a passion. Gloria Brown and Judy Lacefield dumped me in a third floor shower tonight.

Ready to Catch the 3:20 A.M. Train Back to Kansas City - Saturday, April 7, 1962

A fast but enjoyable vacation is over. I'll be catching the 3:20 A.M. train in a few hours. This afternoon we went to Wellman for Phyllis and Linda Jo to set up their science fair exhibits. Phyllis's is "Antibiotic Research of Organisms in the Soil" using some of my old soil samples. Then we drove out and walked around the new school. It's coming along nicely. I helped Phyllis do chores again. We went down to Cuddebacks for a few minutes this morning. This was about the nicest day we've had all week.

Enjoying a Quiet Day and Taking Time to Read in "Don Quixote" - Friday, April 6, 1962

I got to drive the new car up to get the mail this morning. Leland Griggs came over to show me how to get it in "park" when he saw me having trouble with it. I went over to see Norma (and Maud) for an hour this morning. Then I came back and got dinner. I read several chapters of "Don Quixote." I "did chores" tonight - fed the chickens and washed the eggs. I saw Linda Scott go through Chester this evening so I called her up tonight. She came home for the weekend with Beth.

Visited Teachers and Classes at MPHS Today - Thursday, April 5, 1962

I visited school today and had a very profitable time. I went to Spanish class with Phyllis, then to Mrs. Kephart's journalism class and had a nice visit with her, stayed for junior English class, and then pleased Mrs. Whitten and Curt by working on a yearbook page. I also got in on two of Mrs, Fordyce's classes. It was good seeing everyone again. I talked to Mrs. Leary a little at noon. The "Roaring 20's Revue" tonight was real good.

A Rubber Snake Should Provide Some Fun - Wednesday, April 4, 1962

This morning I had a nice leisurely sleep. I got up in time to get Daddy some dinner. The afternoon was soon gone by the time I washed dishes, mended my shorts, ironed a blouse, played the piano and read a little. We went in to do the wash after school. I got a real live looking rubber snake at the sports shop that should provide some fun around the dorm. Phyllis and I went to youth fellowship tonight.

Listening to Records in Iowa City, Having Lunch and Going Shopping With Jerolyn - Tuesday, April 3, 1962

Today I went to Iowa City to listen to music records at the University Library. After finding the numbers of the ones I wanted and discovering that the librarian was familiar with Park, I listened to three in the morning. Just as I sat down at Kresge's lunch bar Jerolyn came along and this was her afternoon off. So instead of going back to the music library we had a very nice afternoon visiting and shopping. We hadn't seen each other since August. She works at the University General Hospital now. We went in to hear the Mid-Prairie, Washington and Mt. Pleasant junior high band concert tonight.

My First Time Watching Mom Teach Her Kindergarten Class - Monday, April 2, 1962

I visited kindergarten today. This was the first time I ever really saw Mom teach school. I wrote the round robin letter and one other letter in the teachers lounge while the kids were taking their naps. It seemed funny to be back in the building on a school day for the first time in almost two years and also funny to have the oldest class be the sixth grade. Tonight Phyllis and I went to an honor society meeting but got there too late. We watched the mixed chorus "Roaring 20's Revue" rehearsal. It's real good.

We Girls Don't Play an April Fool's Stunt at Church After All - Sunday, April 1, 1962

Back to the good little old home church again with a chance to meet all of the people. We took the Johnsons to the restaurant in Keota for dinner. The new car is so nice. What a rainy, cold day. It has snowed some both yesterday and today. A long time ago we girls decided that we would hide the notes of Mr. Peters' sermon the day April Fool's Day finally came on Sunday. We didn't hide them. As it was, Virginia played the piano (she's marvelous) and probably would have had a good chance to do it.
