About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Family Met Vivien and Charlie - Thursday, May 31, 1962

The family got me about 7:00 tonight and now we're back in the same motel we stayed in when they brought me down last fall. What a year it's been. Almost everyone that was leaving before Sunday left yesterday or before. Gloria and I made beds and cleaned rooms all day. I made $16.00 in three days - almost half as much as I normally make in a month. They almost missed seeing Vivien. Phyllis just happened to see her - from description and picture only - sitting on the chapel stairs with Charlie, so we turned around and stopped for a minute.

Getting Ready for Alumni Weekend - Wednesday, May 30, 1962

The campus is about deserted. Almost everyone left today. Karen Bentson and I are spending our "solitary confinement" in 401 - that's the way we feel. I worked here today for seven and a half hours - I washed windows, swept the storage closet, side entrance and lounge, dusted, cleaned the kitchen, cleaned doors - using gasoline to clean off left over "Merry Christmases," knocked a lamp over while cleaning the lounge but caught it in midair (!), helped Betsy Franklin, also a "janitoress," clean rooms and make beds for Alumni Weekend. Second floor is no more with almost everyone either gone or moved up to fourth. Wish I hadn't packed my ink.

Moving to the Fourth Floor - Tuesday, May 29, 1962

When you put yourself to it you can do a lot in a day. Everyone who is staying past tomorrow has to move to the fourth floor so Alumni can have our rooms [for Alumni Weekend]. I moved everything of mine up to fourth and down to the trunk room. Just had time out for a chocolate pudding cake party in Regina's room. This afternoon I was on my way to the library when I found a note in my box for janitor work. I worked in Stephens this afternoon mopping the hall floor and cleaning the lounge. The music test wasn't too bad.

Studying for Finals by Candlelight - Monday, May 28, 1962

We're having a night just like when the electricity goes off at home. The electricity has gone off so we're studying by candlelight - finals, nonetheless. Some of us have decided to go to bed and get up early. This morning I listened a little more to the records and worked this afternoon and that was my day. I don't see how all semester long I also crowded classes into similar fast and busy days. It's sad to see kids leaving.

Baccalaureate Was This Morning - Sunday, May 27, 1962

I hate to see this year come to an end. (Except for darn music tests!) Baccalaureate was this morning. It was real impressive - the procession with the cross and flag bearers, the faculty in their robes and colors, and the seniors. This afternoon Bonnie and I went to Craig Little's recital. Tonight I walked with Barb down to the river and then we came back and sat on Mackay steps and watched the sky and lightning bugs.

We Hiked to an Old Stone Mansion - Saturday, May 26, 1962

This afternoon Marge, Nancy and I decided to hike to the old mansion which is the opposite way from Alfalfa Point. We found it way down a path in the woods without too much trouble. It was an old stone house abandoned probably ten years ago - like the one Charley Ralston used to have on his farm that they once fixed up for a youth fellowship Halloween party. We came back by way of Hawley Lake and the president's barn. I've listened to most of the records today (I've heard them all now). Tonight I joined a third floor gab fest while Flo cut my hair.

Took French and Anatomy Finals - Friday, May 25, 1962

Boy, I'm glad my French and anatomy finals are over. Except for music (uh-) I'm free. I got a 65 on the anatomy test - right in the very middle. Everyone thought it was hard. I know I didn't do as well as I could have on the French test. I'm afraid I may come out with a C for the semester. Marge, Bonnie and I went to see "One, Two, Three" tonight. It was satirical and rather boring. It gave a big scoop to Coca-Cola, Kleenex, Stripe Toothpaste and Pepsi-Cola. For a while Margaret and I listened to records in the chapel. Those listening rooms are so hot.

A Party with Copley Boys - Thursday, May 24, 1962

Today was stop day. Incidentally, last night, of all times, some of the girls wanted to go get the Copley boys for a party, so after about five trips up and downstairs after the first call of "House meeting!" at 12:00, I finally undid my hair, put my clothes back on, and went down till 1:30. This afternoon I went to the gym for my apparatus final (I've probably failed the course) and then put in an hour and fifteen minutes work. Marge and I studied anatomy together tonight and now I have to study for my French final. I only got a C for anatomy lab.

First Year of Classes is Over - Wednesday, May 23, 1962

I hate to be perturbed. Maybe it's because I only got a 77 percentile on the French standardized test and should have done better. Gee, my first year of college classes is over. It really went fast. Tonight I went with Judy Jones to Bev Bush's recital and then with Becky to the folk sing and watermelon feed (what there was left of it) at Dearing.

We Received Our Yearbooks - Tuesday, May 22, 1962

Well, three tests down and four to go. Today's - French standardized, phys ed (we didn't have time for the practical) and anatomy lab - weren't too bad. This morning was the honors assembly after which we got our yearbooks. We used the same company (Inter-Collegiate Press in Kansas City) last year in high school. It's a pretty good yearbook. Sue Thorpe was the top student this year. Now to read "Faust" and get ready for the world lit final.

Farewells, Presents and Refreshments - Monday, May 21, 1962

We had our last house meeting of the year tonight with farewells, presents and refreshments. Tonight I looked over the bones again in anatomy lab. The night watchman was there - he really knows a lot about bones. Art said to him, "I bet you've been to college." He said he'd been by one. Oh, I don't want to take my three tests tomorrow. The fact that my camera was used without my permission for a "nude" picture doesn't add to my good humor either.

Miss Fishburn Hosted a Buffet Supper - Sunday, May 20, 1962

The library workers were invited to supper at Miss Fishburn's house in Parkville tonight. It was outdoors, buffet style and so nice. I succeeded in getting myself quite red sitting out in the sun (hazy) again this afternoon. A fast year has passed for baccalaureate was a year ago tonight. The hours we pass at college are beautiful hours - I think I have just around 300 left this year. I just love our campus. The woods out here at the edge of the lawn looks just just like Bady's timber on the edge of Grandpa's farm.

A Note in a Bottle - Saturday, May 19, 1962

I'm writing in Margie's room so I have light to see while she is in mine looking out at the rain which we've been doing for the last 45 minutes. We sang about every song in the book. The rain is so pretty. I went with Vivien to Antoines, the ACC steak dinner in the Meetin' House tonight. Then Gloria and I took the bottle with the canoe trip note down to throw in the river. I sun tanned this afternoon. I got a copy of the new view book but they didn't use the picture I took even after I won the $5.00. I was in the volleyball picture.

About 20 of Us Saw "Hamlet" Tonight - Friday, May 18, 1962

Margie and I went to see "Hamlet" tonight. It was really good but there were only about 20 people in the audience. They're giving it three nights. I just found out we don't have world lit tomorrow (that will teach me not to skip class - Thursday). But I guess I'll go to the Monday class and take the final with them on Wednesday since I have three other tests on Tuesday. What a go-around - it will soon be worse. These silly days just slip away too fast.

Typing Paper was an Ordeal - Thursday, May 17, 1962

I finished Kelmie's paper just in time to get it over to her before 10:00. She wasn't there. It was sort of demanding (I even skipped world lit) since I was supposed to have five days or a weekend. The bad mood that I've had ever since my music test F finally wore off, for good, I hope. We practiced apparatus performances for our phys ed final which will be Tuesday, same day as our lab final and world lit (which I can take on Wednesday).

Elected Lucerne WRA Representative - Wednesday, May 16, 1962

Kelmie finally got her paper to me at 10:00 tonight. It's not going to be too easy. I've typed two pages of texts and it has footnotes. I was elected Lucerne WRA representative tonight at our meeting. I'll serve all next year. Margie was also elected for next semester as a replacement for our carry-over from this year since neither Sue nor Vernice will be back. Guess I'll go to bed - seem to have let my thinking power fall asleep.

15 of Us Took a Psychological Test Tonight - Tuesday, May 15, 1962

Tonight 15 of us freshman girls took a psychology test on group activities that Carolyn, Mickey, John Laderer and Ed gave. We took a written test and then had a group discussion on criminology. They observed us for such things as participation, leadership, how easily we were swayed and so forth, although we didn't know that at the time. Kelmie wants me to type her religion paper now but she didn't get it over here tonight as she planned. I'm afraid I just might not have it done for her tomorrow night. Mrs. Applebee spoke in chapel this morning. She's such a nice lady. Her grandfather (one of Park's original 17) wrote "Near to the Heart of God."

Prose for Unrequited Love - Monday, May 14, 1962

I don't like Mr. Larson. He gave F's to 23 on the music test and I was among the unfortunate. Ooh, I'm sick. Now I have another possible D for a course to be concerned about. Another world dropped out from under me yesterday when Jim went off with Linda Lehman and some other kids in a convertible for an afternoon of fun. As if it should matter. I wish I had the nerve to flirt with all the campus gods who have ever eyed me - including "the most huggable man on campus." My, I sound bad off. This is my prose for unrequited love.

Attending a Discussion About the Baha'i Religion in the Meetin' House - Sunday, May 13, 1962

Tonight some of us went to the discussion on the Baha'i religion in the Meetin' House. At first I wondered if they weren't propagating a Jehovah's Witness type religion, but they seem to be an intelligent, well-informed, and energetic group, and have some real good points. Well, I accomplished a little homework this weekend but not as much as I should have. I wrote home to inform them I'm supposed to be out of here 24 hours after my last final (Tuesday at 12:15). They weren't going to come until at least Thursday evening and maybe not until the weekend. Maybe I can get a job for a couple of days.

Pictures at Heart of America Alumni Association Meeting - Saturday, May 12, 1962

Now I have not only taken pictures for the view book but for the July Alumniad as well - if they turn out. Both Tom and Kathy went to Council Bluffs today so they had me take pictures at the Heart of America Alumni Association meeting tonight in the Meetin' House. Tom showed me how to work the press camera this morning and Mr. Edwards was there tonight to tell me what to take (one was of the audience - and he even introduced me!). I went to the library for a while this afternoon. Marge and I fixed up a note in a bottle commemorating our canoe trip to drop in the Missouri. The finders we hope will notify us.

Looking at Old Congressional Globes and Records in the Library Attic - Friday, May 11, 1962

Four more prospective students have arrived. We have them from time to time. Some of us went swimming tonight. The pool was crowded but refreshing. Marge was at the library this afternoon so I took her up to the attic. We looked at old Congressional Records (and Globes), Park class pictures, old Narvas and Styluses. It's so interesting up there. I was looking at a Ladies' Home Journal for 1898. It was full of corset advertisements. Yesterday the temperature (92 degrees) was the hottest for the day since 1911 (88 degrees). It must have been as hot today.

A Copy of Finals Schedule Brought Back From Mackay is a Popular Possession - Thursday, May 10, 1962

Boy, tonight went fast. It's bad enough when the days go fast, but when the nights slip away, too --! I guess we don't have anatomy class tomorrow so I'll be able to sleep later. The finals schedule came out today. Since I brought a mail box copy back I had the most popular piece of mail for the day in my possession. I have French and anatomy the first day, world lit on Monday, and music Tuesday. In anatomy we had the fun of looking at both the male and female pig reproductive systems - it proved interesting to say the least.

A Kansas City Rabbi Was Vespers Speaker Tonight - Wednesday, May 9, 1962

Miss Hampl has taken too much of my time again tonight. We had an hour and a half of slides and an Air France film in French Circle. I must go to France some day. I'm still doing French. I went to vespers tonight. A Jewish rabbi from Kansas City gave a real good speech. He gave the benediction in Hebrew and translated each line into English. I don't know how I did on the music test. I missed an A by three points on my French test.

Listening to Classical and Romantic Music Records Tonight - Tuesday, May 8, 1962

I listened to classical and romantic music in the chapel tonight. I hope I can keep Mozart's 40th, Beethoven's 1st, and Brahms' 1st Symphony straight, not to mention Haydn's 104th, Smetana's Moldau and so forth. It was lucky I decided to come back with Judy Cox when I did as it was 9:45 and I had thought it was only 8:45. Now I've worked solidly on French and still haven't done the memorization. That lady's getting carried away with homework again. I was doing pretty well in hockey today. I switched to the forward line after Kathy Kline hurt her hand.

After All That Our Anatomy Test Grades Won't Be Recorded - Monday, May 7, 1962

French test tomorrow and a music test Wednesday. Ugh! And Mr. Hearson isn't going to record our anatomy test grades because he gave it (different and harder at that) to two of the Parchie Varsity kids  a day late and got the idea we might get to thinking he was showing some kind of favoritism! After all that studying and concern. It was hot today. I got awfully tired of working in the library. I'm proud of myself that I got "Youth, Beautiful Youth" read for world lit.

The LLCs Have a Steak Fry at the Careys' House in Parkville - Sunday, May 6, 1962

This afternoon was the choir concert and for supper the LLCs had a steak fry at the Careys' house. We played badminton before we ate. Tonight Carlyn and I went to the Sunday night discussion group. The leader was rather long winded. Oh help, why am I letting my studies fall behind now, of all times? Right now my mood is not real pleasant.

Seven of Us Freshman Girls Go on Our Canoe Trip With Two Professors - Saturday, May 5, 1962

We took our canoe trip today. We were only sorry that Judy X couldn't get out of choir rehearsal to go along. Barb Page went in her place, and Becky, Flo, Judy Cox, Nancy, Marge and I. We went up to the Platte River to "put in," came down that and into the Missouri - about 15 or 18 miles till we got to the White Aloe below campus. We had a wiener roast on the shore and stopped in Kansas for a rest. Judy and I took turns paddling in Dr. Gaeddert's canoe. It was pretty windy and choppy at first (we almost turned back) but the last hour was beautiful. We were gone from 11:00 to 6:45. Marge and I about died laughing tonight at Parchie Varsity.

An Easy Day of Classes, a Snake, Tennis, Mackay Steps, and a Pizza - Friday, May 4, 1962

After supper I played tennis with Leila and Bonnie. Then Bonnie and I sat on Mackay steps, then came back and made pizza for ourselves, Judy Jones and Carolyn Frobig. I'm afraid another week has passed. I didn't have a lot in the way of classes today with the anatomy test, Dr.Hampl not there for French (she had done a recording for us), and a short music class. I saw a great big snake beside the Meetin' House steps. Mickey, Ed and Marge were down there waiting for poli sci and came to my "rescue" when I said, "Is this snake real?" It was so still.

The Nice Thing About College is Having Everyone Smart - Thursday, March 3, 1962

Luckily for me Dr. Hampl won't be here tomorrow so I was able to spend all evening studying for the anatomy test tomorrow. We had an LLC meeting tonight. I had a terrible time getting through Dick and Dave's heads what a relish plate was. Today I followed my typical Tuesday-Thursday schedule including assembly, phys ed and lab. The nice thing about college is having everyone smart and no one look at you funny as if they're better than you (a lot of this may be just Park) - this type thing began last year at Mid-Prairie. Brad Kiesey won the Quill and Scroll national feature writing contest!

A Six or Twelve Hour Job as a Reporter For the Park Stylus Next Year - Wednesday, May 2, 1962

Tonight I went to vespers. Five other people besides the speaker (Doug Meng) were there. The music class did a "grand march" through the chapel today trying to figure out what Mr. Larson wanted us to do. We never did figure out how the whole class was supposed to listen to records in two little listening rooms. I can't get down to studying anatomy. Oh, I got my job as a reporter for the Stylus next year. I'll have to find out if it's a six or twelve hour job.

A "Happy May Day From 207" Basket For Our Counselor - Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Oh, where does the time go every night? I have done my French and a report for music and now it's 11:00 again already. I had better start studying anatomy. It was so pretty out at noon that I thought I'd  go out and take some pictures. By the time I got up here it was cloudy and at 1:00 it was pouring rain so we didn't go out for field hockey. We've had severe weather warnings near here several days. Vivien and I fixed Merry Lee a tiny little May basket that said "Happy May Day From 207."
