About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Halloween Activities at Park - Wednesday, October 31, 1962

Halloween at Park this year began with a "picnic" breakfast in Commons. We had to eat from paper plates since there wasn't any steam for the dish washer. Tonight there was a horror movie in Alumni (a mystery - "The Bat") and then a "food" party in the Meetin' House. Margie and I helped celebrate here by putting up the black and orange crepe paper I found last spring in streamers in the hall. I got a B on my psych test (shoot, I would have liked another A - several kids got them this time). Oh, my religion test grade was terrible - 63. He had said this test wouldn't count in our midterm average, but it does. I cried a little.

LLC Girls Won Speedball Game By a Forfeit - Tuesday, October 30, 1962

We were supposed to have a speedball game with the OAC girls this afternoon but we won by a forfeit since they didn't have enough players there. We went ahead and scrimmaged for practice. Then we went over to watch the LLC boys play the ACC boys in softball. We were really going good for a while but then we lost. We had a lot of fun cheering the guys on. I caught up with Jim after assembly and we had a nice little talk on our way to the J.R. about pheasant hunting. It seems so nice not to have a test to study for or a float to be concerned about -- but I have so much to do even so ------.

"Intelligence, Education and Culture of Jesus" - Monday, October 29, 1962

It's good to be back in a studies-only routine. Now I must really work for the last half of the trimester. This afternoon I finally selected an article on learning for my psychology library project. I selected "Quizes' Contribution to Learning." I've taken notes on the article but still need to dream up my conclusions. Then I went to talk to Dr. Johnson about my religion paper topic. He said I'd selected a very interesting topic ("The Intelligence, Education and Culture of Jesus") and suggested some books for me to use. Now I must study some more for my French test.

Bonfire and "Swan Lake Ballet" Movie - Sunday, October 28, 1962

Oh, what an exhausting weekend. Margie and I went to church with Jay and Dale this morning. They had morning chapel services for once. Then we went to Waids in Riverside for dinner. Kids from campus go there all the time. I hadn't realized it was the place we ate breakfast the first morning I came to Park. The boys left at 1:00 to go back to Omaha. This afternoon I read history but I was too drowsy to get much out of it. The bonfire and box lunches on the lower soccer field with singing and then the movie of the "Swan Lake Ballet" were a nice climax to Harvest Festival.

A Double Date to the Dance - Saturday, October 27, 1962

The float didn't place. At first I was a little ashamed of it compared to the others but then I decided it stood a good chance for third place. The PCCs won with a very good float, "There's No Place Like Nome," OACs second, ACCs third. We also lost the soccer game to Tabor so I guess that means no national soccer tournament. Margie had invited Jay Pooley down from Omaha and he had his friend Dale H. (can never remember the last name - German) drive down in his white 1962 convertible. I went with him to the dance. After we left the dance we were going to go out for pizza with Judy and Wayne and Nancy and Bob but their car got lost, we got tired of following them, got lost ourselves, called Hawley to say we'd be later than our 2:00 hours, found out directions, but then got on the wrong road and were on our way to St. Joe before we finally found our way back at 2:30. About too much!!

Working on the LLC Float - Friday, October 26, 1962

(Written later). Let's see if I can remember everything that has taken place this weekend. What a weekend. Almost too much. I got up at 6:00 to study religion with Kathy. The test was pretty hard. At 10:30 (we didn't have psych or French class) Nancy Arvard and I began taking chicken wire up to the Johnsons and rounding up supplies. Then my life saver Bob Lastick began helping and good old Roger  was lending me moral support and now at 12:00 AM the LLC float somewhat resembles our theme of "Tokyo - Old and New." The movie industry mural needs to be redone, but all in all it's been fun working on it though we didn't get the truck till 3:00, etc.

Received Permission to Get Chicken Wire - Thursday, October 25, 1962

I didn't do anything about the float today except to get the chicken wire from the library. Some of the other clubs are already working on their floats. But I have a religion test to pass before I can work on ours. If I have to stay up all night I'll pass that test. Oh dear, I've regressed to my old ways of only average college work. But at least I still have a chance to save myself with only A's and B's rather than C's - maybe. Peggy Peck and Bruce Clark are the homecoming queen and king, attendants, Connie Voss and Mel Blades and Carol Bucher and Bob Young.

"Cuban Crisis" Needs Interpreters - Wednesday, October 24, 1962

While I took a bath and brushed my teeth just now I was pleasantly entertained by two of the Chinese girls on our floor speaking in Chinese to each other. Language is yet another miracle of our world - and yet our "Cuban crisis" must be carried on by interpreters. I got a B on the soc test. The psych test was an essay question to write on our understanding of the scientific study of learning based on the different theories. I must be getting awfully tired. I wrote "new" where I meant "old" and "old" where I meant "new" on our float description and never even noticed it until Glenn Petrie called it to my attention.

Cuba Crisis is Still on Our Minds - Tuesday, October 23, 1962

We had an LLC meeting tonight with a good representation of the new members. The float seems well under control. Glenn and Edna presented the plans they have drawn up. We had speedball practice this afternoon from 4:00 to 5:00. We had a lot of fun. I can use what I learned in field hockey. The soc test wasn't too bad. Now I have to accumulate my facts for the psychology test. The Cuba crisis is still all you hear talked about. Everybody keeps saying, "Gee, if we have a war I won't have to take my _____ test" - but it's really not so funny.

President Kennedy: Soviet Missiles in Cuba - Monday, October 22, 1962

It's go, go, go. But at least I just finished an article on the Park College growth campaign so maybe Carol will let me live for another week. She still has my student teacher story, too. I read sociology in the library tonight. I have three tests this week. This continuous push gets old. A lot of us watched President Kennedy's speech to the nation at 5:00. Soviet missiles based in Cuba have become a matter of grave national concern. When he started saying, "And now by the power vested in me by the Constitution," we all thought he was declaring war, but he was only listing seven "preliminary measures." I just hope and pray.

Copley Staged Annual 2:00 AM Raid - Sunday, October 21, 1962

Last night Copley staged the traditional Hawley raid - the one that makes you think, "Oh no, another Hell Week!" when you first hear the noise at 2:00 a.m. Bev and I ran down to the lounge by way of the back stairs and were greeted by an emphatic "It's about time!" Then we noticed we were the first ones there, when we thought we were latecomers! We just stood there laughing with the eyes of Copley upon us. I was in my housecoat and still half asleep. I went to church this morning with Bev. This afternoon I added Vivien's religion notes to mine - Dr. Johnson talks so fast it's hard to get all he says. I went to Mrs. Neihart's organ recital.

Nice to Be Several Years Behind Time - Saturday, October 20, 1962

There was a Sadie Hawkins dance in Alumni tonight. I was there for quite a while. I thought "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" would never end when I was dancing with one of the ELI (English Language Institute) students from Madagascar. I didn't exactly like his attitude. Jim and Merl were singing that song when we detasseled corn last summer. The Peekes are going hunting at home in South Dakota this weekend. Jim didn't have to save anyone at the pool last summer - I finally got around to asking him that. Enough boys have been looking at me lately. I feel as if I'm just several years behind time compared to the average girl, but I read once that it is nice to be that way.

Smart Kids From All Over the World - Friday - October 19, 1962

I went to the Cosmopolitan Club meeting tonight. No one ever came to unlock the Meetin' House ("Who's got the key to this little house?") as Sabri from Jerusalem said) so we moved to Herr House lounge. College is so nice - you're constantly around smart kids, not only from all over the country but from all over the world. Copley had a 10:00-11:00 party for Hawley and Herr House. I spent the evening with Charles Young. He's nice, as are many of the freshman guys.

An A- on "The Puzzled Centipede" - Thursday, October 18, 1962

The Stylus looked really good tonight - it would, when there was room for only one little article of mine. It should mean that I won't have to do too much next week when I'll be so busy anyway. Glad I didn't have time to do the Western Heritage article - there wouldn't have been room for it. After my taking the chicken wire back last night, someone else must have gotten it! Burt better track it down again, or we might as well have kept it. We got an A- on our modern dance interpretation of "The Puzzled Centipede" - Sandy, Mary Kit, Kelmie, and I. I was the frog.

Chicken Wire for the LLC Float - Wednesday, October 17, 1962

Burt Dunbar got ahold of Becky questioning her if she knew who stole Mr. Campanella's chicken wire! Since I had told her about the library incident she wondered if I might have something to do with it so called me up. She then talked to Burt again and called back to tell me, "He wants it back where it came from - tonight!" It's back. I took it down on the way to chapel. Ho hum! All this over three rolls of chicken wire! I think we shall just go down to the Parkville hardware store and buy it! I proofread before and after French class. The Harvest Festival king and queen assembly was this afternoon. It will be hard to choose.

We Accommodated the Government - Tuesday, October 16, 1962

Margie, Nancy, Terry and I had a meeting with Mom (Hawkins) tonight. She said we were a special four honor girls - since we're the only non-Penthouse or freshman dorm members or counselors we have no house council representatives. She served us delicious ice cream cups and pretzels and invited us to come down whenever we feel like it for cinnamon toast or something. She wants to go out of her way to help us since we accommodated the government. Last night at 10:45 Kathy and I ran down to Alumni to get two rolls of chicken wire that Margie had seen down there. I guess it was Mr. Campanella's!! Then Miss Fishburn "caught" Margie and me when we were after some in the library attic! I tried! Campy (Mr. Campanella) gave an excellent "visual lecture" in assembly - he painted Teresa and Pam.

Met to Get Library Weekend Hours - Monday, October 15, 1962

I'll write now so I can jump into bed when I get back from practicing modern dance at Herr House after hours. I read sociology in the library tonight. We had a little rain. The wind felt good coming in the windows till we had to make a mad move to shut them when the rain started blowing in. Judy Paxton and I went to the library meeting at 4:15. Maybe we'll get our library open on weekends. I didn't have real good luck with my news today - but I've got a good lead from Dr. Pivonka for a couple of weeks from now. I got a C+ on today's history quiz. I want to raise my grade point average.

Going to Woodward's Open House - Sunday, October 14, 1962

This was another beautiful day and it still continues to be hot. This afternoon I read history - part of the time with Vivien and Becky on the bench by Mackay and the rest of the time in the history room. I had never thought abouut using the Mackay rooms to study in, but kids do it all the time. Tonight I went to chapel and then with Margie, Becky and Joy to the Woodward open house. I'm glad we finally got to see it after missing their open house in the bad weather last winter. It's such a nice old dorm off by itself over there in the woods. It must have been quite a hotel in its day. The day has finally come when: boys are my friends!

21 New Members of the LLCs - Saturday, October 13, 1962

The LLCs got 21 new members. We were so pleased. The new members will really be good for the club - eight of them are girls. Margie, Flo and I were "runners" for the girls. By the time we ran from Commons to Hawley, down to campus, and then on the snake dance we were about pooped. "Green and white, fight, fight!" against "L.L.C.!" Then we walked up to Dr. Johnson's house for games and a barbeque. It was a good afternoon. I got another B+ on my history quiz - now I only have to get an A from Urban. Gee, maybe I'll get an A in each course yet - wish those could be final grades!

Drive-In With Chris and Her Ohio Relatives - Friday, October 12, 1962

Tonight Joy Matthews and I went with Chris, her mother, aunt and grandmother to the 9:00 show, "Errand Boy" with Jerry Lewis. They came out from Ohio to visit Chris for the weekend. Chris drove tonight and we drove out to the 45-71 junction and back after the show. I have just washed my hair. I think I'll stay up and read my psychology. It's bad when 80 kids in the class have to share one reserve book each week. He did get a few supplementary ones out though. Word is that the LLCs are getting quite a few members. We've really been having some hot Indian summer weather.

Chairman of the LLC Harvest Festival Float - Thursday, October 11, 1962

Tonight I was elected chairman of the LLC Harvest Festival float building committee, or actually of "the float" since I don't have a specific committee. But Bob, Kathy and Gloria will be working right with me and we already have a "nucleus" formed. I got good letters from Mom and Phyl today. They are moved in to town now, Miss Asby got infectious hepatitis and all of West Chester School had to get shots, Mom's cousin whom she has never seen is coming to visit. Phyl's letter was funny - except for the fact that Rusty Parcell was badly hurt in football. Jim had a real nice "Hello-o" for me when I said, "Hi, Jim," by the Mackay mailboxes.

Dr. Patton Defines Faith - Wednesday, October 10, 1962

These cuckoo freshman girls are making "wee-wee-wee" noises - the likes of which I've never heard. To think we were like this last year. Gee, I should have been a counselor and then I'd been being paid for living in Hawley. I went to vespers tonight. Dr. Patton, the new man in the religion department, spoke. He's fabulous - what we need here. At the discussion here afterwards I helped serve the coffee and cookies and cleaned up afterwards. He defined faith as 1) "assent to," 2) "emotion to," 3) "knowledge of," 4) "will to," 5) "action (as in life itself)." This type of thing must be kept going. I had my yearbook picture taken and proofread this afternoon.

Bought a Park College Jacket on Sale for $1.50 - Tuesday, October 9, 1962

I have been reading history and psychology in the library and now have to finish history. Maybe I can get back to more reading again and try to get caught up on all of it. We also have to do outside reading in French. I guess I'll read "Le Petit Chose" which I bought last summer. I bought a Park College jacket on sale in the bookstore for $1.50. It was originally $11.90. It does have a spot of some sort on it. I may see if the cleaners can take it out. Our modern dance didn't go so well (Edna had us change it at the last minute and there were other complications), but she still gave us a C.

Interview With Architect Ends With Phone Call - Monday, October 8, 1962

This afternoon after French I went to the public relations office to see if Mrs. Young had any news. I ended up interviewing a visiting library architect in the dean's office. The dean left him with me - then the president called to have him go to the soccer game with him, thus ending our chat! Interesting, this reporting job. I spent an hour at the game (we beat KCU 7-0) and then helped the LLCs serve the OAC dinner. Tonight Edna, Theresa and I practiced for modern dance - we finally decided to use "Good Night, Ladies." It had to be a song. I'm sacrificing a lot living in Hawley. We should be living with upperclass girls, not freshmen.

French Club, Foreign Students go to Art Gallery - Sunday, October 7, 1962

This afternoon some of the French club members and foreign students went to the Nelson Art Gallery to see the French movie, "La Symphonie Pastorale." Some of them stayed to tour the French collection, but Fred, Nancy, Art, Frank and I came on back to campus. Barb Page went in with us. We got there a little late because of all the time we spent driving around Kansas City (we about got caught up in a parade) but at least I got to see some more of Kansas City. The day was beautiful and we had a ball. I went to church with one of the freshman girls.

Terry and Nancy Move to Hawley - Saturday, October 6, 1962

I slept till 11:00 this morning. I had no idea it was that late when I got up. The Hawley situation had a new skirmish today. Terry ended up moving in with a freshman, Nancy came up to 308 instead of moving to 202 with Terry, and Barb and Gloria aren't coming over. It was because of them that Margie and I decided to "volunteer," I think. Oh well, I imagine in the end things will have worked out for the best. I went down to Parkville this afternoon and got some flash batteries so was able to take a picture of our room. I wish I could have gotten a picture of my "study corner" in Herr House. This evening some of us went to "Battle Cry."

LLC Dinner and Party Were Successful - Friday, October 5, 1962

Our LLC dinner and party tonight turned out marvelously. Our menu was good, the decorations very nice, in short everything was everything we could have wanted. Our new president, Bob Lastic, said "You haven't seen the half of it," - we may be getting quite a few new members and really going places. There was also a student union party in Commons tonight with lovely decorations and music. Glad another week is over - weekends are good to catch up in.

An A on Our Modern Dance Interpretation - Thursday, October 4, 1962

Chris is up here looking at my scrapbook. Margie cut my hair this evening. We had our LLC serenade tonight. I guess we sounded pretty good. I went to the library from 8:00 to 10:00 to read the Constitution. The 22nd Amendment wasn't in - surely the book's not that old! Leslie, Sarah and I got an A on our modern dance interpretation of "Trees in a Storm." Just one other group got an A. She said as she had looked around beforehand, ours looked the best. She said that about my group once before, too! After all my work, my art exhibit article wasn't in the Stylus. I again had the "main" article - the African series.

Elected Treasurer of WRA - Wednesday, October 3, 1962

All up and down the hall I hear kids reading their western heritage papers to each other. These kids really have a "challenge curriculum." But I think I do, too! At the WRA meeting this afternoon I was elected treasurer, Kathy, vice president, and Cheryl Wiley, president. Judy Percival is secretary as part of her gym job. The religion test wasn't too bad except I didn't know enough about David. Neither did anyone else I've talked to though. After our LLC meeting tonight I went down to read proof but the print shop was locked. I couldn't find Carol either. So I came back and helped make rush favors.

Mr. Campanella Liked My Articles - Tuesday, October 2, 1962

Another long, hard day is over - I should still do a little more religion reviewing and finish reading my history. I hope I can get 20 freshman invitations for the Lowell-Lucerne dinner done by tomorrow noon. I was going to do 40, but Margie is doing half of them. I got  a C to C+ on my history test! Gee, was I glad! I finished up my "African series" news article just before my 5:00 deadline and took it over to Carol. Mr. Campanella liked the two art articles - my style, etc.

Mr. Campanella Will Check Art Articles - Monday, October 1, 1962

It's nearly bedtime and I haven't done a bit of studying. I wrote up four news articles (two of them required little or no thought), will have to have Mr. Campanella check the two art ones and do one on the African series tomorrow. We had an LLC meeting. Marvin and Roger want to resign as president and vice president of the Lowells. What next! Two of the freshman girls and I practiced our modern dance in the lounge tonight. We decided to be "trees." Scrap, scrap, scrap! Grr! I'm fine but I wish I were better. It wouldn't be hard to let my nerves go to pot in this small room.
