About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

"Child Who Read Too Loud" in Ed Psych - Thursday, February 28, 1963

Oh, murgatory! If there were only 48 hours in every day! I have 30 pages of history to read and my own plus four given definitions of politics to write, not to mention that I haven't finished the French play we're supposed to have done by tomorrow and have 20 pages of ed psych to read before the test tomorrow at 4:30. One thing is certain, I'll either live or die. Ed psych tonight. Nancy Taylor led it and had us form groups to act out defects in children. I was "the child that read too loud." We had a swimming practical. She would have given me an A on my crawl but I didn't breathe (B+), C- on backstroke, incomplete on elementary back - which I haven't learned yet.

Typed Six Stencils and Weekly Letter Home - Wednesday, February 27, 1963

Well, I have about run out of the evening typing stencils (six) for Jan for her political science report and writing a letter home. We finally got our religion tests back. I got a 78. I thought I had done better than that. On the poli sci test I got a B but I only got a C midterm course grade (rats!). At least I won't have any D slips this time, thank heavens! But this time the freshmen and sophomores get midterm grades in every course. I need to get to bed. I have a long, hard 24 hours ahead of me (as usual!). We had our LLC picture taken tonight. Only four Lowells showed up.

A Camping Trip in Colorado - Tuesday, February 26, 1963

We just had a house meeting about our house party a week from Saturday night. It was nice of Mom to send me $6.00 (my allowance) today. Now I won't have to write home for money. If I go to both Lawrence and the work camp I'll need it. Nancy Ayres has the proposition of her, Margie, Judy and me and her brother and three of his friends going on a camping trip in Colorado in August. It's a question of the rest of our parents' consent. It would be a ball. I read history and started poli sci in the library tonight. We're having readings in that for the rest of the term. We had a riot playing "Number Relay" in phys ed. The pool at 90 degrees (bath tub) temperature was too warm to swim in longer than five minutes.

Reading the Play "Orphee" - Monday, February 25, 1963

The poli sci test wasn't too bad but I probably should have done better. There were sure a lot of tests today. I got what little news there was to get. In French we have been reading the play Orphee that we are going to go see at the University of Kansas next Monday night. I finally got the part in Cocteau: Scandal and Parade read that we were supposed to, so now the play reading will be much easier. I'm slipping in my old 7:30 breakfast Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It's getting to be more like 7:40. But we never have very long lines any more like we sometimes used to. They've been working on remodeling the library all year. For what it's worth to whom it may concern, you know! Gosh, how odd my conglomeration is tonight!!

A Quaker Service in Apartment Basement - Sunday, February 24, 1963

I decided to sleep this afternoon, first time I've done that in ages. Because I did I was just waking up at 4:45 rather than already gone to Commons at 4:30 when Karen Haenisch called up to say to come downstairs because she had a surprise for me. Carolyn Frobig (Armstrong) was here so I got to see her for a few minutes before she and her husband left. They live by Sioux City.  He goes to Westmar College. The Quaker service that  25 of us went to was a lot like I thought it might be - in the basement of an apartment house. Three people were moved to speak in an hour.

Made Poster for Weekend Work Camp - Saturday, February 23, 1963

This afternoon I made a poster for Commons about the Kansas City Weekend Work Camp March 8-10. I'd like to go in, and Margy Romig and George Bruner are interested. It would be nice if we could get a group. Then I went to the library and read psych (while we weren't busy watching Copley's snowball fight - those guys climb up and down the outside stone walls - I guess that's Copley tradition though). It snowed a beautiful wet snow this morning. Carolyn Brown and I went down to Parkville. Tonight I saw the OAC show - four plays. There was a J. R. party (but kind of dead).

"The Place of Religion in the Public Schools" - Friday, February 22, 1963

Rats!! I got up at 5:00 this morning to read history since I figured we'd have a quiz. We did. I didn't get any credit for one of my two answers (4+ out of 5 for the other one) so I only got a D+. I almost would have been ahead to "forget it!" Tonight I went up to the health center to see the doctor. He thinks I should just let my twice per month period since September just work itself out. That's what Mom thought, too, but it's nice to know. I talked with Dr. Johnson about my religion term paper topic. We chose "The Place of Religion in the Public Schools."

Ed Psych Discussion Went Well - Thursday, February 21, 1963

This has been one of my more profitable Thursdays - class wise. In swimming we had a 20 minute endurance test - supposedly not stopping to rest. We handed in our cards in elementary phys ed and I signed up for March 12th to present a game from the file. Carolyn and I combined our ed psych     discussion with John and Karen's - I think Mr. Gibson liked the results. Tonight we had a "pie night" for George's Birthday tomorrow. Rev. Seamans had a note in my mailbox for Ann DuBois and me to take care of Hawley's WUS [World University Service] solicitation.

Went to Vespers and the Band Concert - Wednesday, February 20, 1963

Tonight I went to vespers (five there) and the band concert. I just finished retyping my games for elementary physical education. Now it's time to go to bed. Ed psych will have to come tomorrow. It's cold out again. Grr, I had a bad day in French and wasn't awake in history. I proofread this afternoon.

Was Asked About Being Yearbook Editor - Tuesday, February 19, 1963

Tonight I went to an SNEA panel discussion on "Discipline in the Classroom" and to a basketball game. We won - it's about time - only our third win all season. Today both Mrs. Dorsey (said she'd back me all the way as yearbook sponsor!) and Dean White asked me about my being interested in yearbook editorship. I'd like it better than the Stylus I think, but at any rate it looks like I might be editor of something! I was talking to Dean White about financial aid - doesn't look too hopeful again. She wishes Phyllis would have decided to come to Park rather than Tarkio. A Mrs. Hesselschwerdt of Kalona - who died - graduated from Park. Mom sent the clipping.

Was Asked About Being Stylus Editor - Monday, February 18, 1963

Oh dear, when I think of everything I have to have done by two months from tomorrow, I shudder. I guess we're just exactly halfway in between Christmas vacation and summer vacation. My roommate is being given "the treatment" while she takes her bath. Hope I can get a shower taken unobtrusively. Stylus news was as usual. I was talking to Dr. Hamilton and Dr. Radloff about the Stylus. Dr. Radloff asked me, "Why don't you take over as editor next year?" Maybe I will!!

Heard Folk Singers Addiss and Crofut - Sunday, February 17, 1963

I'm getting drowsy. I guess maybe if I can finish getting history read, I'll go to bed. The jazz concert was pretty good. Addiss and Crofut, two folk singers on the program, have performed for Adlai Stevenson and U.N. delegates. They had a cute song built around the theme, "On the first day we met, Mr. Kruschev said to me..." Jim was playing basketball so was late and then he had forgotten the tickets, but we finally got there on time to get the last two good seats in the house. After that it would have been the front row, the back row or the steps. Grandma sent me a Valentine care package of cookies yesterday.

Basketball at University of Kansas City - Saturday, February 16, 1963

Some of us went with the basketball team to the University of Kansas City tonight. We lost by about 20 points. Cheryl Wiley and I went with Hal Henderson, Jim Peeke and Will Stewart. Another time that one element probably would have put me on Cloud 9, but not tonight for some reason. I don't think it's just because I may finally have other interests, but I think I may have outlived my crush on Jim Peeke. Jim Trett came down to the gym this morning to watch me play Leslie in badminton (I lost). He and I and Margie and John Olson played for an hour after lunch. I typed elementary games this afternoon.

Dr. Urban's Annual "Cross of Gold" Speech - Friday, February 15, 1963

The religion test was rather easy. I'm anxious to see how I did on it. Dr. Urban gave his interpretation of William Jennings Bryan's "Cross of Gold" speech. I guess he does it every year. It was a riot. "You shall not press down the crown of thorns upon the brow of labor or crucify mankind upon a cross of gold!" I washed my hair and slept this afternoon. I had a nice time with Jim tonight. He's a swell guy. I'd better get to bed. I have a badminton match at 8:30.

Party to Raise Money for March of Dimes - Thursday, February 14, 1963

Tonight from 12:00 to 2:00 in the J. R. we had an all school party that just developed during the evening after some kids heard on the radio that a Kansas City disc jockey was organizing a hike for the March of Dimes and planned to go to the Parkville fire station. Copley got in touch with them and arranged for them to come to the college. We donated a "shoe box full" of money. I spent the evening with Jim and he asked me to "The Interns" tomorrow night! I have a religion test in the morning. Guess I won't get much sleep tonight if I get up at 6:00 to finish studying.

Journal Item About Being Queen - Wednesday, February 13, 1963

We had to have ed psych on Wednesday night this week. After all our preparation, they didn't get around to Carolyn and me since we still had last week's lesson to do. I could use more time to get mine ready anyway. I ate both breakfast and supper with Jim Trett (there are too many Jims). Both times it sort of just happened that way. I proof read this afternoon. Mom sent a nice write-up about my being queen that was on Friday's Journal front page. I guess they knew about it before I did! We had a history quiz. I got a B+ to C-.

A Chopin Concert by Wiktor Labunski - Tuesday, February 12, 1963

This noisy dorm makes me edgy! I wonder if I'll have enough patience to teach school? Wiktor Labunski from the University of Kansas City played a Chopin concert in Alumni tonight. I could have listened to him all night. He's famous all over America and Europe. I get to hear another famous musician Sunday night - Jim Trett asked me to the Stan Getz jazz and bossa nova concert. Carolyn was back tonight to go over psychology. It's so fun playing those games in physical education in elementary schools. Every dorm on campus was hit with some bug - most likely Commons food - last night and this morning. I was one of the "victims."

Bought Airmail and Five Cents Stamps - Monday, February 11, 1963

I spent most of the evening writing news. Carolyn Reed was here for a while. She and I are in charge of the ed psych class for Chapter 9 Wednesday night. We did our preliminary planning. I got a B on the ed psych test, one of the best grades. Even so, I got a lot of 0's. You'd think he could give a few points' credit for some of them. I made a trip to the post office after French class. The airmail stamps I got to mail Mrs. Cowan's valentine and the five cents stamps I bought were pretty. Mr. Hearson drove me back up from the stop sign.

Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox Services - Sunday, February 10, 1963

Margie and Bob went to Wichita today to visit his aunt. They aren't back yet. I hope they hurry along. Today some of us in Religion 202 witnessed a Roman Catholic and a Greek Orthodox church service in Kansas City. Several of us had never been to a Catholic service or a Greek service before. Both of the services and the churches were very impressive. The Greek Orthodox had a lot of chants, singing and speaking, in Greek. Altar boys and communion at both. Ritual, incense at the Greek, bell ringing and wine pouring at the Catholic. Margaret and I, Vivien and Charlie went with Rev. Seamans. A cute girl [from South Dakota] has been Jim Peeke's guest this weekend. I guess that's the way the ball bounces.

A Nice Talk with Bonnie - Saturday, February 9, 1963

Boy, I have caught myself a cold! I'm putting it to bed early tonight. After supper I had a nice talk with Bonnie. It did us both good. She got one less vote than I did for club queen and she said she was so happy for me, that she was really sort of glad she didn't get it because she didn't like dances that well. She said she thought in many ways we're a lot alike and I think she's right. Bonnie's eyes are really getting bad. She thinks she may have to learn Braille or get a reader. Carey said I got the most applause of anyone last night.

Chosen as Lowell-Lucerne Queen - Friday, February 8, 1963

This is really hard to believe. I was the Lowell-Lucerne Club queen! Dave Kennedy is our king. I'm sure I really know how to perform the role of a beauty queen! I received a tiara and a dozen long stemmed red roses. The others were - ACC, John Garrett and Karen Haenisch; OAC - John Ramirez and Karen Garner; PCC - Tom Gale and Peggy Peck; and LEC - Don Dancik and Kay Donnelly. Tom Darch and Kathy Gillespie announced their engagement. Jim Hunter and I went to the dance with them - all four of us in the back seat - so I thought that was a privilege. Jim Peeke announced Mary Anne Higginbotham and Mark Fisher's engagement. I had my hair fixed this afternoon in Parkville. Margie's boyfriend Bob is down from Chicago. Oh, what an evening! They once said McDowells weren't meant to be beauty queens.

Nancy is IRC Representative - Thursday, February 7, 1963

We had an ed psych test tonight. Some of the kids left after the test so he let the rest of us go. It was nice to get an earlier start on homework for one Thursday night. I persuaded Nancy to go to the house meeting tonight - the sophomores haven't gone to a lot of them. She was elected interdorm council representative. Strange, I can't think of anything else to write - and procrastinating isn't getting history read. Carol didn't use my assembly attendance article. I heard several kids say, "Let's see how the assembly attendance was," so it is read! Mr. Reynolds stopped me to talk about the Stylus. He said he heard I had ambitions - editor type ambitions. The only person I ever mentioned even the possibility of that to was Carol Greene.

Socialized with Sinan in the J.R. - Wednesday, February 6, 1963

Pat Frost and I read proof tonight and Carol worked on layout. Then Pat bought me a Coke in the J. R. and we sat at John Van Horn, Sinan Kunt, and Robert Kindrick's table and talked mostly nonsensical, like, "Let's declare this National Hate All Turks Week," etc. That Sinan is one good guy - also about the smartest American History student and from Turkey at that. We had a WRA Council meeting at 4:45 and a rules meeting for individual sports at 5:00. We had a French test today. Dr. Hampl was back.

Studied on Blanket on the Front Lawn - Tuesday, February 5, 1963

I read history and political science in the library and was finished with both by 9:30. Now other things have kept me from getting back to summarizing the poli sci and studying for the French test tomorrow. Diane Porter was over to copy some of my French notes. The noise here caused her to ask me how I could stand it. Sometimes I wish I knew! I just blew my stack at my roommate in an argument stemming from Ed Staniec's kicking my ball away from me (all in fun!) in an elementary physical education game today. I should control my temper, but I've taken enough long enough. This was a beautiful day. I studied for a while on a blanket on the front lawn.

Dr. Hampl's Apartment for French Class - Monday, February 4, 1963

Dr. Hampl had our French class go out to her house a few miles out of Parkville for class this afternoon since she still wasn't well enough to come to school. She has a real nice apartment out by Melody Farms. My bad luck day - tipped over some Coke on my car coat when I laid it on the table for lunch and flunked my fist history quiz (didn't even do that last semester). Pat Frost is going to be a good reporter. She, George and I ought to really be able to swing things now - it's about time. A second February 4th in a row was a beautiful spring day. On that day last year some of us hiked to Falling Springs in Bermudas.

Lucerne Rose Tea Was This Afternoon - Sunday, February 3, 1963

Dee and I went down to Dyer's open house tonight. Tom Gale, Ron Bowman, Ron Knight, Bruce Scott, Randy Fehr and Bob Grinnell live there this year as "service" guys who run errands for the college. They have a nice layout. Their theme was the White House. I listened to the First Family comedy record which I hadn't heard all the way through yet. The Lucerne Rose Tea was this afternoon. It was very nice, except only one senior girl, Peggy Rabe, really showed up. It was interesting visiting with the faculty wives though. History is dull this time, but I guess I better get it read. We have a picture of Chestnut with our toilet seats that Kathy's taking reprint orders for.

"Persephone" by Philharmonic, Park Choir - Saturday, February 2, 1963

Goodness, this has been quite the (sunny) Groundhog's Day. I heard the Park College Choir perform Stravinsky's "Persephone" with the Kansas City Philharmonic, heard the Philharmonic's American Premier performance of Earle Brown's "Available Forms No. 1," Jim Hunter asked me to the ICC dance, and Vivien asked me to be a bridesmaid for her wedding next December. I guess that's to make up for another of my unlucky breaks - what Dr. Reynolds saw me buying in Busch's - after I walked all the way down to Parkville to get them [pads]. If I wrote that, I should also mention running into Dr. Reynolds and Dr. Boorstin a week ago Friday skipping one of the first assemblies I've ever skipped. Sometimes I can't win, but I certainly did today!!

Saw "Hatari," After Seeing Hatari Plane - Friday, February 1,1963

The movie "Hatari" was really good. We saw a Hatari plane parked at the Cleveland airport last summer. This afternoon, since Dr. Hampl wasn't there again today, I went in to Kansas City with Margie and Nancy. Since I bought some stuff at the bookstore and my Hell Week reprints and have to save $2.50 for "Persephone" tomorrow night, I didn't spend any more of the $10.00 check Mom sent yesterday. Some virus is going around. Karen Lewis had it first - they thought it was measles. Bob Young, who was in the health center, too, has it now, and Jim Hurst, who had been up to visit Margie, went up tonight with it! Here's wondering.
