About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Six Went with Dr. Johnson to RLDS Church - Sunday, March 31, 1963

Six of us (Vicky, Dave, Gary, Danny, Nick and I) went with Dr. Johnson to Independence to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We left at 7:15. After the service we were given a tour of the auditorium (assembly room seats 5,800) which is the headquarters for their biennial world conference. We saw the council room, seat of government for the world organization, museum, kitchen and living room. We also had a discussion with colored slides. The guide also gave us (free) $1.00 copies of the Book of Mormon and view folders. I've spent the rest of the day on my religion term paper.

Many Worked on Papers Due on Monday - Saturday, March 30, 1963

Well, my paper's coming, it's coming, it's coming! I have nine pages so far. Kathy Butler finally talked me into leaving it to go to the 9:00 show with her. It was Tony Curtis in "The Great Impostor." Phyllis or Virginia, maybe both, saw it two years ago in Des Moines at the state tournament. This was rather a quiet Saturday. Too many term papers are due on Monday. Gee, 15-week terms - I don't know. Dr. Hampl is going to Monmouth next year.

No Classes for "Spring at Park" - Friday, March 29, 1963

Classes were called off today for a stop day and "Spring at Park." It sure seemed like Saturday. Well, I didn't accomplish much on my paper but took in most of the festivities instead. This morning there was a student-faculty breakfast and then a student-faculty softball game (I did work on my paper during that time). This afternoon I went to the Nickel-Chestnut soccer game (they tied 1-1) with Carolyn Reed. Then we went bowling (Brig was open free) and Chris Hayward went along. We also went to the street dance tonight. From 5:00 to 6:00 I helped with Hawley's booth (ring toss and coin toss) at the carnival. I got a care package - cookies and candy.

Was Elected Lucerne Vice President - Thursday, March 28, 1963

Today in the Lucerne election for next term's officers I was elected vice president. In the run-off between Carole Demort and me for Lucerne Best Athlete, Carole won. I'm glad, because she really did deserve it. We had a game tonight with the PCCs. We actually led 7-5 at the end of the first quarter, but the final score was 47-14. I was really proud of Chris, Kathy and Patsy's guarding - Patsy reminds me of Donna Statler. We were supposed to have the Stylus staff picture taken tonight, but no one was showing up for the pictures, so they're being rescheduled. The pictures all should have been taken "years" ago. Ed psych tonight, but all we did was go over the test.

Elected Stephens Officers, Chose Rooms - Wednesday, March 27, 1963

Tonight the new members of Stephens went up from 10:00 to 11:30 to elect officers and choose rooms. I am the new secretary. Kathy Gillespie will be treasurer, Diane Porter, president, Karen Garner, vice president, Cheryl Wiley, IDC representative, and Ellen Guild, house council member. Evelyn and I got the last choice room, light blue (actually gray) on the front side next to the lounge. It's going to be fun. I got a D on one of my French tests (horrors! but lots of other kids did badly), and a B on the other. Student council inauguration was this afternoon.

Applied to be Narva Editor - Tuesday, March 26, 1963

I went early to the library tonight but didn't feel like studying so took a 15 minute walk with Shari, came back and still didn't feel like studying. So I came back to Hawley and wrote my letter of application for Narva editor. Linda also called me to do another stencil for the tie between Pat Swinney and Kathy Old for WRA secretary. So, now I've still got history and poli sci to do, but at least I'm in a little better mood now. Karen Lewis and I refereed the ACC-PCC game. The ACCs won 27-17. We were not the world's best referees, but at least we were able to get away with our lives!

Typed WRA Ballots - Monday, March 25, 1963

The LLCs lost to the ACCs in basketball. The score was only about 78-5. We had a WRA meeting to draw up the slate for next trimester and I typed it up for the ballots tonight. I also wrote Stylus news (my eighth subject!). Well, actually, only my sixth, since elementary phys ed and swimming don't count that much. I got a C+ on the ed psych test. Spring has sprung!

Entered Alpha Delta Writing Contest - Sunday, March 24, 1963

This afternoon after we forfeited our basketball game to the PCCs (after I had a team rounded up) I went with Angela Lee to the Cosmopolitan Club exhibit in the Meetin' House and then studied history. This evening I typed up one of my Stylus articles, the one on the English Language Institute, just for the fun of it, for the Alpha Delta writing contest. Linda and Carolyn were over here about WRA offices. I guess I'll be running for chairman, and Carolyn, too. I have to finish up my poli sci paper and maybe not have to get up early for once.

Saw "Judgement at Nuremberg" - Saturday, March 23, 1963

Well, I've done it again. Another beautiful Saturday and I didn't get anything done. Now that I'm over another (the last long) crush, I think I have a crush on myself or something. I really must begin to open up more around people of the opposite sex. Like praying, it's something I "put off" far too often. I shouldn't analogize the two. Barb Page and I watched the tennis match with KCU for an hour this afternoon and I went with her and Margaret to "Judgement at Nuremberg" tonight. It was different and good. Margie is on the OAC hayride tonight.

An 89 on the Religion Test - Friday, March 22, 1963

Well, another one down and four to go. But really they're going too fast. In all my life I never saw weeks go so fast. I had the last part of our French test at 2:00 and an ed psych test from 5:00 to 6:00, so I'm about tested out. I got an 89 on the religion test! It's about time - I always seem to get lower than what I think I should on Dr. Johnson's tests. I had Flo cut my hair tonight and then I swept her floor for her. Something squeaking sounds like a windmill. It must be Jo's typewriter ribbon case.

A Roommate For Stephens - Thursday, March 21, 1963

Ed psych got out at 9:00 tonight since we didn't have time out for a break. The pool was too hot for swimming and elementary phys ed had been called off so I didn't have any classes today. But for all my efforts trying to read psychology, I didn't get very far. And we have a test tomorrow. Guess I'm still too excited about making Stephens to concentrate on studying! Evelyn, the off-campus girl, is in my swimming class, and I think we'll try to room together. We seem to have quite a bit in common. She's lived on a farm, parents teach, and is majoring in elementary education. She's Margaret Brisch's sister.

Am Voted into Stephens Honor Dorm - Wednesday, March 20, 1963

This morning I found out that I am among nine of 29 eligible girls voted into Stephens [honor dorm] for my junior and senior years. They voted last night on the ones they wanted in: Sylvia DeFriend, Evelyn Gatton, Barbara Page, Margaret McElwain, Nancy Ayres, Kathy Gillespie, Liz Ralston, Karen Bentson and myself. The number was rather limited so it seems like even more of an honor. They're leaving several openings in case some of their previously accepted members like Merry Lee Dean and Lou Rogers come back. We had an LLC party in the Brig tonight. We had a lot of fun bowling and playing pool.

In Awe About Van Gogh Exhibit - Tuesday, March 19, 1963

Gee, if this were a school for nothing but activities, it would be fine, but since there seems to be homework, too, it makes it kind of bad. I have just finished my Stylus news. Mr. Sherwood will kill me (George said he's in a bad mood). I wanted to get it done this morning but news gathering took longer than I expected - Dr. Hauptmann loaned me a copy of the book he and Tuesday's German speaker both have articles in. The Van Gogh exhibition was fabulous. After being shown in Philadelphia, Detroit and Kansas City, it's going back to Holland. We had a WRA meeting tonight to elect all-stars.

Will Try Again to Solicit for WUS - Monday, March 18, 1963

I believe I will try once more at 10:00 tonight to see if we have any better luck with Hawley's WUS solicitation than we did last night. It was supposed to be turned in today, but I didn't have a chance till 4:00 and then when I called Rev. Seamans I couldn't get him. The LLCs beat the OACs 13-11 in volleyball, but they said it wouldn't count since neither of us had our full team there by the official forfeit time. I hope I did alright on the religion test. Really, there's no excuse that one could offer since we had a list of questions ahead of time. I typed what news I had tonight.

A Visit at All-Souls Unitarian Church - Sunday, March 17, 1963

Some of us went to the All-Souls Unitarian Church this morning on another religion field trip. It's a very modern building. There was a symbolic art tapestry at the front and other works of art around the church. Very intellectual atmosphere, including the sermon on "A Liberal Looks at Lent." Quite a contrast to a week ago today. The freshman LLCs got the upperclass LLCs up at 6:00 for a surprise breakfast in the Meetin' House. We had a lot of fun. Some of us decided to go as we were to breakfast in Commons. I "refused" at the last minute and bolted over the hedge (low) toward Hawley - Kathy and Dave soon hot on my tail. The LLCs beat the PCCs - after they had beat the ACCs!!!

15 Library Books for Religion Paper - Saturday, March 16, 1963

This was really a March day. The wind (but so warm) blew hard all day. I went to the library and got 15 books for my religion term paper. I'm glad there was such a good selection - my topic is "The Place of Religion in the Public Schools." Well, as usual I didn't accomplish much today. Dee, Bev and Margie are sitting here pooling their problems. Depression reigns. I'm getting concerned about the history test - rats, I'm not going to worry about it. Margie irks me - boys, boys, boys.

PCCs Presented Parchie Varsity - Friday, March 15, 1963

Parchie Varsity was good. The PCCs have lots of talent with all their music majors. The new student council members sponsored a party in the J.R. tonight. Gee, I guess it's about time I went to bed. I haven't had much sleep (nor have I hardly stopped to rest) for a week now. I wasn't overly fond of the history test. Gee, I wonder what I'll get?

"Money's Worth" in Commons - Thursday, March 14, 1963

Ed psych tonight. It seemed to go so fast this time. Now I have to study, study, study for the history test. The results, in order, of the Proportional Representative election were Terry Scullin, George Englebretsen, John Smith, Dave Kwo and Pat Frost. I gave my game from the file in elementary physical education - "Jump the Shot" (jumping a turning rope in a circle). I went to the library to look up definitions, then to the women's lounge to do French. I got my "money's worth" in Commons today! Breakfast - got there late, so went into the kitchen and was served anyway; lunch - upset the tray scrapers by throwing away a wadded up LLC notice with my tray - "Hey, little lady!!"; supper - held up the line while they went to get tea bags upon my asking "Are there any tea bags?"

LLC Initiation For New Members - Wednesday, March 13, 1963

LLC initiation for the new members was tonight. We played the ACCs in volleyball. We did pretty well in the first game, which they won 13-7. I'm afraid not getting my news down to the print shop till this morning may mean it won't get in. But there's so much stuff from other people. George and Terry both are considering editorship I guess. Good - that means I can probably have the yearbook. Well, we're all back in that last month's rat race.

Helped Candidates with Campaigns - Tuesday, March 12, 1963

Oh, I'm getting farther and farther behind. Help! All I accomplished today were things that won't help me pass my courses- printed propaganda for "John Gondring for Vice President" for him to mimeograph, passed out propaganda for Carol in Hawley, played with Margie in badminton doubles (we actually beat the PCCs - Carrie and Sara, but then lost to the ACCs - Joellen and Joycelyn). I hectically wrote news, hurried to the library to get the book I wanted for "Charisma," and now have wasted an hour I never should have. Kindrick is president. Hornaker and Kwo have a run-off tomorrow.

Went to Lecture by Dr. Louis Boyarsky - Monday, March 11, 1963

I didn't get any news written tonight, but I did go to Dr. Louis Boyarsky's lecture on "Order and Disorder in the Nervous System." There was a very good turnout but it's too bad the article wasn't in ahead of time.  Volleyball intramurals started today. The LLCs lost to the PCCs and the OACs to the ACCs. I didn't have my French done today when Dr. Hampl had us put it on the board - first time. I can feel myself getting terribly behind. I can't ruin a potential good average again! Dave Kwo and his American wife and their little baby (campaign technique) were in Hawley Lounge tonight. Student Council elections are tomorrow.

Park Group is Called Congenial - Sunday, March 10, 1963

We finished our work camp at noon by eating the leftovers. Rev. Seamans came and got us at 1:30. This morning after breakfast we evaluated the work camp. Some of the kids went to the Quaker service, and some of us stayed at the chapel and went to their service. It has been a very worthwhile, interesting and profitable weekend. Mr. Briggs commented o the congeniality of our group. Perhaps our typical Park College hospitality radiates. Well, back to college life. I went with Nancy Avard to the ACC steak dinner (Antoines).

Perceptions of Lives in Northeast Kansas City - Saturday, March 9, 1963

My work was with Enid from National College and Loren from MU. Our job was varnishing the woodwork of a 4th floor apartment living room on East 11th Street. All of the other groups had painting jobs. Mrs. Williams was a Negro woman with five children. She evidently took a little more pride in keeping her apartment looking nice (though the living room was junky) than some of the other occupants. The old wooden stairway, dirt, and writing on the walls looked pretty wretched. We discussed the day's work tonight and all decided that just being with these people did as much good as the physical work. Tonight we all walked down to the Helping Hand, an organization that gives tramps and alcoholics board and room for small fees for three nights, the Italian center of KC, Mafia, and welfare stores.

Arriving for a Weekend Work Camp - Friday, March 8, 1963

Hal drove Chris, Gidget, and me to the Kansas City weekend work camp being held at Northside Presbyterian Chapel, and we were the first arrivals at 5:00. We soon met Kim, one of the two co-pastors here, and Jan, our cook and woman chaperone. There are 19 of us from seven colleges - Park, Southwestern (Winfield, Kansas), El Dorado Junior College, National, Stephens, MU and KCU. It's a nice bunch of kids. After supper we had an orientation session and discussed problems of the area with several social workers and innercity church ministers. Then we watched a junior high teen hop here and went in two groups several blocks to the high school one. They are part of the social program for the kids in the "projects."

Will Make Campaign Cards for Karon - Thursday, March 7, 1963

Well, back to Thursday night and history to read and poli sci definitions to type and write my own of (15 terms in all), French to do before class tomorrow, then hurry back and get ready for the work camp. We had a WRA meeting this afternoon. Student council electioneering was this morning. There are some good candidates. Karon Haenisch was just here campaigning. She wants me to do some note cards - Karon Haenisch for Proportional Representative. There was no swimming or phys ed today!!

A Thank You Card From Dr. Romani - Wednesday, March 6, 1963

After all my "trouble" with the last two articles last night Carol wasn't able to find room for them (thanks to Dr. Urban's lovely long book review). I told her Dr. Hamilton would choke me. I was talking to Rev. Seamans this afternoon about transportation to and from the work camp, WUS, and the Amana Colonies and Mennonites (he went to SUI and used to preach in Iowa) - we just had "Bizarre American Religious Sects" in religion class. I think he may be asking me to lead vespers some time. Ann had it tonight. Dr. Romani was really thrilled with his "Happy Birthday" song, Mom said. He sent third floor a cute card that said "Thank you - I was tickled pink."

Will Sing "Happy Birthday" to Guest Lecturer - Tuesday, March 5, 1963

I wrote news all afternoon and still had two articles to do tonight. I had taken them down to the print shop and on finding it locked, was trying to see if there was a crack at the side or bottom of the door to push them through when I was caught in the act by Mr. Sherwood. He had just been driving past and saw me. I've been getting third floor together on the idea of waking up a visiting lecturer in the Hawley guest room whose birthday is tomorrow (read it in his biographical sketch last week) by singing "Happy Birthday" to him. I found the perfect card in the drug store and we're giving him some campus pictures that Kathy and Tom printed.

Saw Two French Plays at University of Kansas - Monday, March 4, 1963

Tonight the French class and Dr. Hampl went to see two French plays, "Orphee" and "L'Apollon de Bellac," at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. They were very good and I understood most of what was going on in the second one and knew nearly everything they said in Orphee. Carolyn and I went with Fred and Nancy, and Frank came back with us. This afternoon John Laderer, Elliott Goldman and I went to observe in the Chinn Elementary School for ed psych. I watched second and third grades.

Went to Dr. Schurr's Existentialism Discussion - Sunday, March 3, 1963

This afternoon I read history, tonight political science. Now I have an essay on "The Dimensions of Time and Place in the Political System" to write. I went to the discussion led by Dr. Schurr this evening on existentialism. It was a continuation from last week. I got an A on the ed psych test. Yesterday doesn't seem like it was Saturday. We have really had a warm and beautiful spring like weekend, and Friday night's weather report had predicted 30 and 40 degrees temperatures.

Mostly Pleased With Midterm Grades - Saturday, March 2, 1963

I got a wee start on my term paper, but so futile compared to my intentions. Oh well, such is life. I wrote home to apologize when I sent this week's Stylus. We got midterm grades in every subject this semester in the 1 and 2 level classes. I'm very pleased for the most part with: French, ed psych, elementary phys ed and swimming, B; history, C+, and religion and poli sci, C. When they don't give D slips, I don't get one! Hope I can raise a few of the grades. I'm determined. It's time to take William Danforth up on a few of his dares! I went down to Parkville and got Virginia some stationery for her birthday.

Sorry We Wrote Home About Camping Trip - Friday, March 1, 1963

I never should have written home about that camping trip. What will they think! I guess I'll write home tomorrow and apologize. Margie and I got to thinking tonight just how stupid we were. I got up at 5:00 and read history, came back at 10:00 and got my political science definitions finished just in time for class, read French till time for class, and after French studied ed psych until time for the test at 4:30. Oh dear, I've written on the February 29th page and this isn't a leap year but March 1st. It seems like just yesterday when we had our sunny Groundhog Day and summer-like first days of February. I'm going to bed at 9:00 tonight so I should get an earlier start than usual tomorrow. I've got to get to my religion term paper and French outside reading started.
