About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Phone Call About Park From Near Keota - Tuesday, April 30, 1963

I went with Phyllis after school to the Hawkette Relays. High school girls track is quite the thing. They really take it seriously. Mid-Prairie came in third, but they've been doing even better at some of their meets. This afternoon the phone rang and when I answered the man who was calling asked, "Do you have a daughter that goes to Park College?" I answered, "This is she." It so happens that there is a Park College graduate only about seven miles from here. He is Boyd Blattner who lives on the County Line Road over by Keota, has a boy ready to start college in two years, hasn't heard much about Park lately, wants to talk with me about it. I ironed today.

Quill and Scroll Initiation Practice - Monday, April 29, 1963

I went with Phyllis and the two Linda's to the school tonight to practice for Quill and Scroll initiation that Mrs. Fordyce wants me to help with. I also proofread for the school paper. I cut out one of my dresses today and played the piano. I didn't do much else - I almost feel guilty. I can see that I'll have to have some kind of job - to keep me occupied - then I'll get more done here in less time. I haven't heard from the Journal office yet.

"What Park College Means to Me" - Sunday, April 28, 1963

Today in church I gave my talk on what Mr. Peters had entitled "What Park College Means to Me." Dean also had me read the scripture and present a story for Sunday School closing exercises. They liked my talk I guess, but I didn't think I had done that good a job with it. This afternoon I wrote to Mrs. Cowan and sent her some flower seeds and thanked her for the ones she sent me. I must get a letter to Margie and send her a check for the $18 she left in her piggy bank.

Soccer in the Side Yard - Saturday, April 27, 1963

I didn't get much done again today. I finally got my talk about Park College that Mr. Peters wants me to give tomorrow written up. Mom said I could read it, so I haven't thought much more about it. We have been washing at home recently [rather than  at the Laundromat]. The girls and I played soccer in the side yard tonight. This is an excellent croquet and game yard [at our "new for us" house in West Chester].

Journal Job Pays $50 a Week - Friday, April 26, 1963

I went back in to the Journal office again this morning but Mr. Morris hadn't been able to find out if Barb Glassburner wants to work again this summer. He was telling me some more about the job - it pays $50.00 a week. I went on a shopping spree - black flats, brown shorts and print material for another dress. My grades came today - B's in everything except a C in history. I finished mowing the grass. They got out of school at 2:30 because of the small group and solo music contest at the high school. We girls went mushroom hunting in Bady's timber, but no luck. We went down to the old bridge by Parcells, too.

This Year's Addition in Scrapbook - Thursday, April 25, 1963

I should have gotten started sewing today but I didn't. I got this year's addition to my scrapbook in order and most of it pasted in. I mowed most of the grass this evening after Daddy started it this afternoon. I guess I'd better get up in the morning when the rest of them do. It's my lying in bed in the morning that tends to make me lazy for the rest of the day, I think.

Went to See About Jobs - Wednesday, April 24, 1963

I went to town today to see again about the jobs I checked into last Christmas vacation. Mr. Morris said at the Journal office that they would know by Friday if Barbara Glassburner plans to come back. They have had several applications for the job. It sounds real interesting - club news, local news, occasional feature articles. At the Ross place I took their test - putting pegs in rows of little holes as fast as possible. He said they would let me know within a couple of weeks if they found a place where they could take me. I should be able to find some sort of employment for this summer. I filled out a card from the post office for my social security number. Got material and pattern for a dress - white with blue, gold, pink stripes. We went to choir practice tonight.

Helped Mom Get Ready for Exhibit - Tuesday, April 23, 1963

I went to school with Mom today. This morning I was her secretary while she went to Wellman for art classes. I typed lists of songs, games and study units for the exhibit tonight. I helped Miss Yoder, the second grade teacher, fix an arithmetic bulletin board. The rest of the time I read magazines and more or less entertained myself. It was a cold day. I've got to get the rest of my stuff sorted - I can't let this vacation be as lazy as last summer's sometimes got.

Took Virginia Back to Doctor - Monday, April 22, 1963

This morning I took Virginia back in to see the the doctor about her arm where she got blood poisoning after she fell down Thursday night. I looked around the stores some and visited with Marilyn's friend Dorothy in Penney's. I took Virginia back to school in time for chemistry class, came home for a few hours, went over to school and brought the kids home, went back and helped Mom get stuff ready for the exhibit tomorrow night, and then tonight went with Phyllis and Linda Timmins to a yearbook staff meeting. Linda is editor. Virginia had play practice for The Birds and the Boys, that we were going to do as seniors.

Home Again, Almost Unpacked - Sunday, April 21, 1963

Home again and almost all unpacked, compared to how slow I was last year. We left some of my stuff down there this time. We got home about 1:30. It was a nice day and pretty time of year to travel. Cuddebacks came for a little while this evening. Well, I guess I might as well go to bed, since everyone else is. They haven't had much of a weekend since they left at 5:00 yesterday to come and get me and are tired.

Mom Helped Me Pack, Took Slides - Saturday, April 20, 1963

The girls and Mom got to Park about 12:30 today. Daddy had to help lay tile so didn't come along. I hadn't quite gotten everything packed when I went to lunch with Nancy and when we got back they were in my room (as I just knew they would be, I had left them a note not to despair too much over the mess) but with Mom's help it didn't take us too long to get ready to go. Mom took a few slides around campus and then we drove up to Alfalfa Point. We drove up to Tarkio, Phyl's college, then. It's nice, too. They hadn't gotten out of the car last fall. We're spending the night at Red Oak.

Evelyn's Home and Family Are Nice - Friday, April 19, 1963

A whip-poor-will clearly calls on the hill. Margie has gone home and for the first time I know what it is like to have a college room all my own. I am halfway through college, and my four hours' sleep last night say "go to bed." This evening I went out to Evelyn's house. She certainly has a nice family. They are a lot like us, remind me of Helen Birkey and her family. The religion and history tests weren't bad at all (the Wednesday night kids for the religion test said it was really bad). I read the first question wrong though and defined all seven terms rather than just five - rats! I got a B for poli sci! Yippee!

Need to Study for Religion, History Finals - Thursday, April 18, 1963

Religion and history yet to go. I don't like the idea of having to take one right after the other very well, but lots of other kids are in the same predicament. Can't wait till exactly twelve hours from now - I'll just be finishing the history final and hopefully, yet sadly, will be halfway through college. I only had a 66 percentile on the French standardized test - right in the middle of the class. Hope I can still get a B for French. In elementary phys ed we had to review a magazine article we had read and evaluate the course. Must study, study, study - but where, I'm not quite sure.

Family Will Leave for Park Early Saturday - Wednesday, April 17, 1963

The day of the big ordeal approaches - of course, tomorrow's French test won't be a minor thing. I went over the last unit's religion notes tonight - this, I feel, will will be a harder test than the other two this term. A letter from home again today - they were disappointed that I didn't get the editorship, of course. I hope it hadn't been built up too much ahead of time outside the family - I doubt it. They are leaving early Saturday morning to come down here. I got a B+ for ed psych (B on the final).

Will Start Studying for Finals - Tuesday, April 16, 1963

Well, I studied today, but not for my last three finals yet. I'll get to them tonight and tomorrow. I feel good that the pressure doesn't seem too bad. And last night I went to bed early and slept twelve hours. When I got what was an SNEA [Student National Education Association] ballot out of my box today I noticed that they have me running for president along with Judy Mosiman and Roberta Jeorse. They were tarring Hawley's roof today. We were not to use the side door "for fear of our lives." Oh, this beautiful weather! Some of the kids found out their ed psych grades - wish I knew mine! I guess there were seven A's. I hope!

This Term's Religion Paper: "Too Condensed" - Monday, April 15, 1963

Ce n'est pas possible! I'm almost halfway through college. The poli sci test I think I did quite well on (I hope I get a B for the course now. We still have our discussion final on Wednesday though). I got a 96 on my religion term paper - marvelous for no more time than I put into it. This time he said it was "too condensed." No, I can't win! Dorm phone jobs for next year are likely filled says Dean White - it doesn't help matters when you end up with a six hour job. I never got the additional six I had wanted for this year. I might be able to work for the mailing room or cook at the health center.

Said "Zotz!" and Plane Tilted its Wings - Sunday, April 14, 1963

This was a beautiful Easter Sunday. It's a shame that there are always so few people in chapel. They liked my new dress. This afternoon I studied in one of the Mackay rooms. Jim Fitzroy was there, too. We had been looking out the window when I saw a plane flying over the river which I pointed at and said "Zotz!" (The movie "Zotz!" Friday night centered around the translation of an ancient coin that resulted in the power of destruction by the holder of the coin for anything he pointed at and said "Zotz!") I nearly dropped dead when at that very moment the plane tilted its wings!

Altered and Hemmed a Dress - Saturday, April 13, 1963

This afternoon and tonight I read a French story due Monday that we've had assigned for two weeks. I still have all of Monday's homework including the poli sci test for which I should read the readings, yet to do. This evening I altered the dress from Minnesota Woolens that Mrs. Kline was selling. The one I tried on must have been sized wrong, as this one was so big. I had it on and off so many times that I didn't put it back on after I hemmed it - hope it's alright. I hope to play Hawley LLC Easter bunny sometime before dorm rising time. Karen, Terry and I talked a little about the yearbook.

Helped Make LLC Easter Baskets - Friday, April 12, 1963

The Iowa City people didn't leave until this morning. I ate breakfast with them once again. So did Bob Young, since his parents are Park graduates, too, and they know a lot of the same people. They left an Easter lily for the dorm. I frantically typed my elementary physical education 18-week curriculum guide and got it done just in time to give to Dee to take to Coach Nelson for the 12:00 deadline. I should have gotten up earlier or stayed up longer last night to work on it. As it was, Margie and I talked  quite awhile this morning. If she stops being so self-centered, I have to take shorter steps when I walk!?! I helped Flo, Bonnie and George make LLC Easter baskets this afternoon.

Was Not Named Narva Editor - Thursday, April 11, 1963

I may have felt just a little disappointed (but not really) about not getting honorable mention for the writing award, but that was minor compared to what happened this afternoon. Not only did I not get Narva editor, but I only got half of the associate editorship along with Terry Scullin. Carole Green recommended Karen for editor and me for associate - it was enough when she told me that, but then to only get six hours. Mr. Larson thought Karen should be editor. Today's interview was like a comps board - Dr. Neighbor's presence didn't help matters. I'll be ticked if I don't get at least a B for ed psych!

Reported on Les Miserables - Wednesday, April 10, 1963

It was winter again today - a dreary, rainy day, too. We had ed psych tonight since the final is tomorrow night. By getting up at 5:00 and reading it every spare minute until 3:00 (only about three and a half hours) I managed to get enough more of  Les Miserables read to give a decent report on it. After all my times of renewing it, it felt good to take that book to the library and leave it. We had a riot of a surprise party for Margie last night when she came in at 11:00 - lots of hilarious laughter. I proofread for the last time. Like Mr. Gibson, I'm "sentimental" about ending my Stylus job - he was talking about "going into the last ten or fifteen minutes of your ed psych class."

Talked with Mrs. MacDonald and Nancy - Tuesday, April 9, 1963

I have 100 pages yet to go of my French reading. I didn't turn in much Stylus news this time, but it's about time I took a break. I talked to Dr. Hampl this morning about some French meetings for the Stylus - I told her she should stop in on her way to or from Monmouth. I talked with Mrs. MacDonald and Nancy for an hour at breakfast. They're very nice - they are spending their spring vacation here till Thursday. Mom said Mrs. MacDonald really likes me. From the sound of things, I missed a good movie this afternoon, "The Birth of a Live Baby," but I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it that much.

"The Music Man" Won "Best Album" - Monday, April 8, 1963

Every minute counts with all the work I have to do. So I will casually write while I have a guest - Terry Seelye. She's up to ask me about Hinduism - I can't remember anything about it. I started my French outside reading, "Les Miserables," tonight. To say the least, it's about time. The Academy Awards are on tonight. The Music Man got "best album." I missed that "Iowa" movie the weekend I went to the work camp. I went down to Parkville after I covered my last Monday afternoon Stylus beat of the year and got Margie a bracelet for her birthday tomorrow. It seems awful that we are going home in two weeks - the campus is just getting nice. Spring at Park is always wonderful. But then anytime at Park is nice.

Introduced Myself to Iowa City Park Graduate - Sunday, April 7, 1963

This morning after church I introduced myself to the family from Iowa City who is at Park this weekend. The mother, girl who is a freshman at University High and boy who is a prospective student are here to look over the campus. Dr. and Mrs. MacDonald are Park graduates - he teaches in the School of Medicine at SUI. They're real nice - I ate dinner with them. She'd like to have the Iowa City area Park people get together this summer - there must be several of us. I had to turn down an invitation to go in to see the home show with them. As it is, I don't know how I'll get everything done. The spring choir concert was real good. Fun tonight in front of the library with some of the sophomores.

Mom Hawkins Arranged a Blind Date - Saturday, April 6, 1963

Well, leave it to when I get the busiest to have some extra fun on top of it! This evening I was on my way to Commons when Mom Hawkins stopped me and fixed me up for a blind date with Stan Hess, a boy from the College of Emporia who was a freshman at Park with this year's seniors. He was back on campus for a missions and ecumenical movement conference but was seeing all his friends rather than attending it. He gets back here quite often. We went to Thieves' Carnival, then walked around campus, then came back and talked at the front desk with Mom. He is real nice. I walked to Alfalfa Point this afternoon with Ardella. Larry Young came to get us in his new convertible.

Saw "Thieves' Carnival" Tonight - Friday, April 5, 1963

I went with Josie, Linda, Nancy and Chu to "Thieves' Carnival" tonight. It was funny. How will I ever get everything done I have to do in the next two weeks? Karen and I went for our Board of Student Publications meeting today (interview) but no one was there - Peggy had forgotten to tell us it had been changed to next Thursday. I was thinking seriously about asking Dr. Hampl if I could cut down on my French outside reading (she said if necessary, we could talk to her about it) - but I turned chicken and ended up making an appointment for Wednesday to report on it - hope I get it done!!

A Peace Corps Woman was on Campus - Thursday, April 4, 1963

Ed psych class tonight. The final is next Thursday, last class Wednesday. Help! Gee, though, I bet even if I get an A on the final, I'll only get a B for the course - gosh, I wish I could completely ace it out - I really think it's possible!?! We had a WRA meeting this afternoon for constitutional changes and basketball all-stars. I was one of six up for forward. Carole DeMort made the team - that's great! A Peace Corps promoter was on campus today. She talked in both elementary phys ed and ed psych.

Started Political Science Paper - Wednesday, April 3, 1963

I got up at 6:00 - after a 5:00 attempt when I went back to bed - to start my poli sci paper and assign yearbook pictures for tonight and write out notices. I didn't get to either of Chad Walsh's lectures - they were Monday and today - or to his night ones for that matter. My year as a WRA representative ended on an interesting, if not typical note. My last two hard recruited players showed up too late to play the game, one minute after the OACs got all theirs there, but in time to save my face in the eyes of the other three LLCs, convince the others that the LLCs "will come through," and cause it to be a double forfeit. As Carolyn said, "I don't believe it!" Such is life.

Heard Dr. Chad Walsh's Discussion - Tuesday, April 2, 1963

Into everything again. Hope I don't flunk out, as little attention as I sometimes give my studies. This afternoon I went over to the J.R. so Kathy and Tom could give me a list of yearbook pictures to schedule. Carole was there, too. At 4:15 I had an interview with her and Mr. Larson. We had a WRA meeting at 5:30 but not many showed up. I spent "spare" time today writing Stylus news and typing WRA minutes. Tonight I read history at the library. Back at the dorm, I took out a half hour to listen to Dr. Chad Walsh's discussion at Mom's suggestion.

Have Finished 31 Page Religion Term Paper - Monday, April 1, 1963

I just finished my religion term paper - 31 pages this time. I'll have to get up early to take it over to Dr. Johnson's box. I can't figure out why the majority of kids think 15 pages is long! Guess I'll have to go in for book writing. Dr. Pivonka gave me some Stylus news on books and chemical gifts to the chemistry department, so I feel "successful" for my year's reporting. He sounded apologetic for not having had any news all year. Also, I was able to put Mr. Edwards' news and an article on "Thieves' Carnival" directly into the Stylus box from my box.
