About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

LLC Float Will Be "Johnny Appleseed" - Monday, September 30, 1963

We had an LLC meeting tonight to decide on our float theme. After much discussion, "Johnny Appleseed" finally won out. Now to get our idea carried through. We played the PCCs in speedball. In spite of a good game, we lost 8-0. Tomorrow I have a test in psychological statistics. I hope for the best. Thank heavens, we won't have any more quizzes this week in phys psych, but we will have an hourly next Monday. Nancy showed me some slide pictures that she took this summer tonight. With a relatively simple camera, they turned out very well. I'll have to try a roll of slides with my camera this fall.

Breakfast for the Lowells - Sunday, September 29, 1963

The Lucernes got up at 7:15 to get the Meetin' House ready for the surprise breakfast for the Lowells. It was really nice. We also ate dinner under the east balcony. Then we had a short float committee meeting. Nancy and I studied in front of the science hall and in Mackay until 3:00 when some of us went down to the Lowell-Lance softball game. We only lost by two points. We certainly gave them enough support! Tonight Wayne and I worked as one of the subcommittees on a float idea. We are going to suggest "Johnny Appleseed."

Saturday Night Woes - Saturday, September 28, 1963

I don't believe that I should feel sorry for myself. But I so easily could. I want Nancy to be happy - after all, she lost her mother and yet has managed to take it like a saint. So it is okay if she walked down to the river with George after the show. After all, last night on the hay ride I probably had more "fun" than Nancy who was sitting up front with Flo and Dr. Johnson. It is okay if Evelyn goes up to the projection room and I walk to the J.R. and back to the dorm alone. And Judy Cox (who broke her engagement to Dick...) was going to the second show alone. I was so glad to see Mary Jane McComas with Fred. I spent most of the day on yearbook work. Karen, Terry and I went to a yearbook workshop at North Kansas City High School for a while this afternoon.

Fun on a Hay Ride - Friday, September 27, 1963

Our LLC party at the Carey's and the hay ride ride were real nice. We had a good turnout, just enough to really fill up the hay rack. Lawrence from maintenance drove us out the river road for an hour's ride and back. Rog had his head in my lap the whole time, and on the way back I had George's tickling to contend with, so I had a ball. Margie was nice enough to take my place at the health center. The test in personality wasn't too bad, except for two questions I knew nothing about. Physiological psychology - quiz again today - at least Wednesday's I got some "very goods" along with my "3" points! And I live in Stephens (3 points, 2 points - how awful!!).

Women's Judicial Council - Thursday, September 26, 1963

Evelyn and I (the "peoples") and Nancy (the Nebraskan) have been running around taking pictures and calling the kitty Herr House gave to Stephens. We can't find Cat tonight. Last night some of my funds were confiscated for the purchase of tuna for him. We've got the hay ride all lined up. The LLCs won a speedball game when the OACs had to forfeit. According to tonight's Stylus, I'm a newly appointed member of the Women's Judicial Council. Well, I must do well on my personality test tomorrow. It wasn't announced till yesterday when Dean Gibson didn't show up for class.

Dr. Johnson's Help with Hay Ride - Wednesday, September 25, 1963

Dr. Johnson is so nice. I was still trying to get a hold of a hay rack or a truck when I called him at noon to see if he remembered who it was that we borrowed the truck from last fall for the float. He offered to take me there tonight - but as it was we stopped at another place when Nancy and I went with him at 7:00. Mr. Miller was very helpful - we stopped to see another man who will give us his trailer if he can get it back from some Boy Scouts. Meanwhile Dr. Johnson is going to check with men at the feed store and post office before his first hour class tomorrow! I hate physiological psychology quizzes - - -.

A Watch is Not Ruined - Tuesday, September 24, 1963

Yesterday's dissertation was apparently unnecessary. My watch started running this morning and has been ever since. Mom sent the shoes I left at home, the Christmas cards I ordered this summer and some sesame chips. I got a letter, too, and my $10.00 allowance. Time sheets are due on the 25th this year, so that should last me till pay day. Nancy and I talked to George Fincke in the J.R. from 9:30 to 11:00. Half of that time he and I were shooting a gum wrapper back and forth. Nancy and I have managed to spend quite a bit of time in the J.R. this year. Dr. Gochman's resignation was two columns in the Des Moines Register (Associated Press).

A Watch is Ruined - Monday, September 23, 1963

I ruined my nice little Timex watch falling into the river. I had it in my pocket and Gabe's waterproof one in the other pocket since they were getting splashed. I took it down to the jewelry this morning. She reminded me that Timex watches have to be sent directly to the company. However, Timex doesn't guarantee watches that have been in water - so I'll probably be ahead in the long run just to get a new one. Gabe, bless his heart, came through with flying colors. I haven't gotten to talk to Flo about the accident. Everyone, of course, has heard..."Oh, you're one of those whose canoe turned over..." I must read psychological statistics.

Capsized in the Missouri River - Sunday, September 22, 1963

Flo, Gabriel and I took a bath in the Missouri this afternoon on the last leg of our canoe trip. We're not sure how it happened, but suddenly over we went. I was sitting in the middle, so was "under" the crossbar and went down, had to come out from under and surface, whereas Flo and Gabe fell free. I'm glad it's always drilled into people's heads, "If your boat ever capsizes, stay with the boat, " as we instinctively did just that. We managed to pull the canoe and swim one-handed and were almost to shore when Nancy, Chris and Bev caught up to us in their canoe. Then Chris and Mr. Layman helped us bail out water, and we completed the trip, having come in sight of the campus by the time we drifted to shore. That is the gist of the story I'll always remember as one of the more interesting of my life. The rest of the canoe trip was fun.

We Beat Tabor in Season Opener - Saturday, September 21, 1963

This was a nice fall Saturday at Park College. We beat Tabor in our first soccer game of the season, our second defeat of our archrival and the first time in seven years we've beat them at home. The guys really played a good game. I walked down to Brisch's house with Evelyn. Ellen is almost a year old now and so cute. Then I went to the soccer field for the LLC-ACC speedball game. Needless to say, we lost. I still have a cold. I hope tomorrow is nice weather for our canoe trip. Terry Osuga and I worked in the concessions stand at the theater tonight. Pay is two free passes.

"The Birdman of Alcatrez" - Friday, September 20, 1963

Evelyn, Barb and I went to the show tonight. It was "The Birdman of Alcatrez." I came back and finished typing Mrs. Lippincott's paper (I've earned $1.00) and took it over to Dr. Johnson's mailbox. Then I went to Herr House and talked to Gloria for awhile, then had Kool-Aid with Pat Swinney and Becky. My flu shot brought on my cold - such a bother. President Morrill was on the radio from 9:00 to 10:00 this morning on a personal interview program about Hell Week. It was alright in general. People could call in to ask questions. Three Park students did so.

Will Type Mrs. Lippincott's Paper - Thursday, September 19, 1963

Dr. Dunham was at the health center tonight instead of tomorrow night this week. There weren't too many tonight. Mrs. Lippincott let me go before he came tonight since he wasn't going to come till 8:45. She gave me her religion paper on "The Creation and the Flood" to type. Evelyn and I have been yakking and laughing about anything and everything. We had a real good LLC meeting tonight. I'm checking into a hay ride for the club in conjunction with next Friday night's party at the Carey's.

Going Without Money - Wednesday, September 18, 1963

I've been going without money. This afternoon I got to the bookstore just before closing time - then Mrs. Rush informed me they were already closed - early, but since I already had my stuff, she'd let me get it. I did need toothpaste badly. She griped "$2.00" when I asked how much over the amount I could write a check for. So I was able to pay Nancy back the $2.25 I owed her for the canoe trip, but she let me keep a quarter so I could eat snacks in the J.R. - I wonder if now I could possibly go till pay day (two weeks) on 25 cents! Maybe Mom will send my allowance next week. I'm not supposed to get in the habit of writing checks.

The March on Washington - Tuesday, September 17, 1963

My "reference figure" has disillusioned me - no, what I'm attempting to say is that Dr. Gochman has announced his resignation because of his dislike for Hell Week, effective in December. And he was the one who talked so pleadingly about "think it over before leaving Park" for a whole 45 minutes last year in basic concepts when the word was flying high that so many were going to transfer from Park. Mr. Wedgeworth, the librarian this year, and Rev. Jerry Belt had a good assembly program this morning about their participation in the March on Washington.

"You Write Very Well." - Monday, Septemer 16, 1963

This business of snakes in Stephens has gotten to be too much. Last evening about 11:30 Fran stepped on one in her bare feet in the hall beside the basement stairs. Then this morning Ellen and Shirley found one in their window sill! Glad it decided to turn left to their room rather than right to ours. I got an A- on my personality "test" paper on the history of psychology. Dean Gibson commented that I "write very well." Truthfully, I think that's my secret - I will admit to not having known the subject as well as I might have.

A Walk to Alfalfa Point - Sunday, September 15, 1963

Since we didn't feel like studying after dinner, Evelyn and I took a walk up to Alfalfa Point and came back on the road through the woods. I took several pictures. It was a beautiful day. I then read sociology while Evelyn talked to Jim and then read ed psych. At 4:00 I went with Nancy for an hour on the tennis courts. We ate our sack lunches on Mackay steps. Karen didn't show up for our scheduled yearbook meeting. I understood her to say she'd come up here. I read personality in the library tonight. Everyone is complaining of not being able to study, but I think I had it worse last year.

Quotes for the Yearbook - Saturday, September 14, 1963

Well, Hell Week is over for another year. I went to Frosh Court with John Baker after Dave called to tell me he was in the infirmary. After I got the date with John, David Mills (I don't know him) called, also saying Dave was in the infirmary, and could he take me...! Evelyn got back this evening after 24 hours at home trying to get rid of her cold. Karen and I looked for quotes for possible yearbook use in the library this morning. Evelyn and I went to "Ride the High Country" tonight. Then I went with Flo to the J. R. party. She and I and Tom took Becky some refreshments.

A Date For Frosh Court - Friday, September 13, 1963

A few of us bright-eyed souls in Stephens got up at 4:00 this morning to watch the freshmen girls come past. However, we heard the firecrackers go off at Copley, decided we had missed them and went back to bed. David Rumpf asked me to Frosh Court. That was this morning as I was sitting on the top of Copley steps waiting for the library to open. He was among those at the health center with colds tonight. We had a busy clinic - it's a nice job. I had a good letter from Phyl. Gee, she has a course load at Tarkio College: biology, basic math, Life of Christ, advanced comp, phys ed, speech and art apprec. Plus orientation classes which should give her 20 hours by Christmas!

Snakes in Our Basement - Thursday, September 12, 1963

We just had a real fun house meeting. These girls are a riot. We laughed, laughed, laughed. Hell Week began tonight with the traditional entry of the goon squad into Upper Commons. One and two years go by in a hurry. I seem to have lost my personality notebook. At least it only had two lectures in it, and not a whole trimester's work or something. We're supposed to write on the history of psychology tomorrow in class. I hope by then -----. We have snakes in our basement - they even had Dr. Hamilton over today to catch some. We're all scared half to death. Tonight we caught Salt and Accent and are waiting for Pepper.

An Upperclass Hell Week Assembly - Wednesday, September 11, 1963

We had an upper class Hell Week assembly this afternoon. It sounds as if it should be pretty good this year. The boys will have to wear suits and good shoes with no socks and the girls heels without hose to class. If someone wants them to, they'll have to go back and change to their regular "Hell Week" attire in between. We had a meeting of "those interested in canoeing" tonight. Flo and Miss Konkle more or less instigated the planning. Quite a few of us plan to take the trip nine of us did my freshman year, if we can get adequate transportation to the Platte River and enough canoes, on Sunday, the 21st.

Talking With Mrs. Flaherty - Tuesday, September 10, 1963

Evelyn and I have just spent an hour at the J.R. talking and eating ice cream and Coke floats. We didn't even worry about not doing homework. I really should feel free to do that more often. We had a Lucerne meeting tonight. We plan to have a surprise breakfast for the Lowells on Sunday, the 21st. I'm enjoying my courses now that I hope to have my schedule finally decided. I went up to the health center this afternoon and put in "two hours" of work by talking to Mrs. Flaherty. Rick Campbell came up later for his janitor job, and one of the maintenance men brought some meat and stayed for coffee and to talk.

Was in French Literature for a Day - Monday, September 9, 1963

Well, I was a student in French Literature, the Age of Louis XIV, for a day. I signed up for the course and dropped The Family, but I got to thinking that I'd have to work just as hard in it as I would have in philosophy, so I think I'll take physiological psychology. That way I'll at least be applying my energies toward my intended minor. I can feel the relief already - the French course would be rough, especially since almost everyone in the course has had Dr. Frizzle before. I hope he doesn't think I'm hopeless when I go back to drop it. Besides, it would take too much time away from my major and minor subjects.

LLC Party at Hawley Lake - Sunday, September 8, 1963

The snake dance and sign-up parties were this afternoon. I was a runner again for Hawley, along with Nancy and Becky. We got about 15 first choice members, nine second choice, and three or four each third and fourth choice members. We had our party at Hawley Lake. Some of us really braved the bogs, underbrush, weeds and wildwood to get there, while others rode. Rog, Bruce and I made a trip to the Red-X for charcoal, ice and pop (it was a riot shopping with them) and another trip to Parkville, including, both times, a trip back to campus. Otherwise I boated (it had one oar) - we also had a canoe - and got acquainted with our new members.

Watched Miss America at Herr House - Saturday, September 7, 1963

It has been a fast day. Evelyn and I got up at 8:00 and cleaned the room. She went home at 10:30 to spend the day. I worked on a ladder dummy for the yearbook but didn't get very far. Karen and I spent the afternoon pooling our thoughts on yearbook matters. I helped Flo make 40 felt LLC badges. Then Evelyn and I watched the Miss America pageant at Herr House when we weren't able to persuade some guys to watch it rather than a football game in the J. R. I really must start to study since that's why I'm here.

Decided to Take Social Problems - Friday, September 6, 1963

Maybe things are about to get settled down now. I finally got my skirts onto hangers and into my closet, went to the health center to make final plans for my job with Mrs. Flaherty, decided to take social problems instead of ancient and medieval history of philosophy, and accomplished a few other things needing to be done - no studying yet, though. Mom sent the dress that she finished up for me, and my alarm clock. Also candy corn - I was thinking I'd like some of Margie's as I walked back to the dorm with the package. They put both of my feature articles in Wednesday's Journal. How's that for "coverage?"

LLC Party Was Very Nice - Thursday, September 5, 1963

Our LLC party was really nice. It was just like my fondest hopes would have wished it to be - for once. Our "Little Switzerland" which Becky and I named, along with our "Lake Lucerne" and "Lowell Lodge" were beautiful, and the response was very favorable. I had three classes today, but Dr. Johnson suggested that those wanting Ancient and Medieval History of Philosophy merely for the requirement should wait and take either Ethics or Plato. I guess I will. I guess I'll try to take Social Problems instead. Walt Black, another transfer to LLCs, his friend Dick, and I went to the Dog 'N Suds for the root beer and ice cream.

Cleaned Out Deer Park Spring - Wednesday, September 4, 1963

My baggage was finally delivered to me today. But I guess some kids sent theirs two and a half weeks ago and it wasn't here when they got here. Karen and I discussed more yearbook plans today. Terry didn't show up. I helped Carol, Kathy and Tom distribute Narvas today. Everyone likes them. This afternoon Becky and I - industrious souls - borrowed a rake from the president's garage and cleaned out Deer Park Spring which we're going to decorate with lanterns for a "Little Switzerland" tomorrow night. The spring will be "Lake Lucerne" and the pavilion, "Lowell Lodge." Our serenade tonight was nice.

Last Year's Narva is Here - Tuesday, September 3, 1963

I helped with registration again this afternoon. Some of the freshman boys had to wait forever for the registrar's office to send their class cards down, so Becky and I had good talks with them. I especially enjoyed Gerald Taylor, a transfer student. Vivien brought over the pattern for my bridesmaid's dress in cranberry velveteen. She found a pattern that will go well with her dress. Evelyn and I went down to P. Ville this morning. I have placed orders for the LLC rush party refreshments - (my idea for once) - root beer floats and graham cracker, marshmallow, chocolate sandwiches. Tonight we finished up invitations and worked on favors. The Narva's here. I got to see it early - it's really nice - and convinced Carol to distribute them tomorrow rather than Thursday after convocation.

Helped With Registration Today - Monday, September 2, 1963

I helped with registration most of the day today. Art Kluge and I checked the course schedules for conflicts, total number of hours, and students on probation (42). I wasn't able to get too many of the courses I would have liked to take, but some that will count toward my minor. I'm taking theory and technique of elementary teaching, teaching of reading, personality, psychological statistics, the family, and ancient and medieval history of philosophy. I finished my share of the LLC invitations tonight and helped with "serenade practice." We had a Stephens  house meeting tonight. This is really going to be a great bunch of girls to live with.

Nancy's Mother Died Two Weeks Ago - Sunday, September 1, 1963

Park College is Park College again with most of the upperclass kids back. Evelyn brought over from their house what she needed this afternoon. She and I went to the movie, "The Seventh Seal," tonight. It was rather strange. We have a rather difficult situation here - Nancy Ayres' mother died two weeks ago. We found out indirectly when her father called Mom Hawkins and said we would have a very upset girl on our hands. However, she seems in very good spirits. Evelyn and I, Nancy's brother and Steve helped her move in. Poor Nancy. Rev. Patton, the new campus pastor, is going to be fabulous.
