About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Paper for Dr. Pai Will Include an Appendix - Thursday, December 17, 1964

I'm racing against time, but with my continued rate of perseverance I should be able to finish my paper for Dr. Pai without much trouble in the morning. It's 12:30, and I'll get up at 4:30. I've decided to include some of the tests and other information in an "appendix" at the end. I hope the bookstore will have a folder to hold it all. Evelyn and I did a good job with our oral presentation for music, I think. I finished my music paper (21 pages) this morning. Mr. Chronister had me type the Education 301 test.

I was lured to your website from a comment on Shirley Showalter's blog this morning. She and I share growing up Mennonite in the farm country in Lancaster County.

How I admire you for keeping such a constant and detailed journal from college days. I always had my nose in a book and seldom recorded my thoughts and feelings except in letters home. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Marian Beaman, thank you for visiting my blog and leaving your comment. It is special that you and Shirley Showalter both grew up Mennonite on farms in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. I, like Shirley, would like to know the entire story of the Christmas you and your husband fell in love the third time you saw The Sound of Music the same Christmas.
