About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Park Beat Calvary Baptist 106-45 - Friday, January 31, 1964

I got off work fairly early so was able to see most of the basketball game with Fred. We beat Calvary Baptist College 106-45. It was exciting to see Park pass the 100 mark in a game. Then we came back to the lounge. Maybe my memory works overtime, but sometimes Fred either doesn't listen to what I say or doesn't always remember. Oh, men! I just finished wrapping his birthday present. I like the tan card with a dog photo and the brown "For Him" paper I found at Jack's. I got a 78 on the algebra test - about average. On our children's lit book reviews I received 24 points, high being 25.

Olympics Skating Championships - Thursday, January 30, 1964

I went to three meetings tonight so consequently I haven't accomplished a lot else. Fred had my watch in his pocket while I was at the meetings so I couldn't keep track of time. Consequently, I lost an hour's time somewhere by the time he left at 10:30. We went to the J. R. for Cokes since he was thirsty after the ACC - Woodward basketball game that they lost 44-43. We watched the Olympics figure skating championships. The meetings were the fundraising committee with club presidents, Interclub Council and Women's Forum. I put up yearbook signs and duplicated notices this morning and went to the library this afternoon.

Mom Has Dating Daughters - Wednesday, January 29, 1964

Fred said he wouldn't come up tonight since he's studying for a heritage test and I am for an algebra test. However, since I got back from the library I've spent just as much time getting ready for bed as I would have spent with Fred. But I guess I won't have to do it later. I've still got a ways to go for the test, but I shouldn't have too much trouble with it. Hope not, anyway. Mom gave some "advice" to Phyllis in her letter about how to deal with Don and said a good rule to follow was not to become officially engaged to anyone before her junior year. She said Fred sounded very nice. Dear Mom finally has some dating daughters.

A Child's Garden of Verses - Tuesday, January 28, 1964

Evelyn and I went down to Parkville this afternoon. I returned the library books and checked out Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses (about time I read that). We also got some popcorn for a dorm birthday party, soup and gingerbread mix for the guys, and I picked out a card and gift wrap for Fred. Fred writes well. He had a heritage review paper here tonight. It was excellent (sounded like a finished research paper). I went to an algebra review session tonight. I wish Dave Portzer, our student grader, would take over for Miss Konkle and teach the class all the time.

Going with Fred for Two Months - Monday, January 27, 1964

It has been two months since Fred and I first started going together. We've spent a lot of hours together, yet there's still a lot I don't know about him. I still find it hard to believe that I've dated one boy for a length of time. At the age of 21 I should refer to him as a man. Maybe I've always underestimated myself and may still. I wish I'd had the experience of dating when I was younger. One thing is certain, Stephens is certainly the dorm to get used to it in. There were too many outside forces acting in Hawley. Somehow I managed to complete all of my assignments for today. Getting up at 4:00 helped. We had a beneficial LLC meeting tonight.

Making and Taking Phone Calls - Sunday, January 26, 1964

I'm at it again - leaving things to the last minute. I have the following assignments due tomorrow: algebra, government paper, arithmetic assignment, geography map, and six children's book reviews. I have only the government paper completed. Actually, that is an accomplishment since I'm usually so late writing them. I'll probably have to get up at 4:00 in order to get everything done. On top of this I spent a couple hours this afternoon phoning and taking calls after I found out the skating rink wasn't open at 7:30 Sunday nights except to rent for $50, but a group went from 5:30 to 7:30. We had the ICC dinner at noon so I saw Fred only for church and for sack lunches.

Movie "Barabbus" Wasn't That Bloody - Saturday, January 25, 1964

Becky Gibson who was up here just went down to the J. R. party to bring up some refreshments for Evelyn and me. Fred and I could have gone, but I'm in for the evening under the assumption that 'm sleepy or something. I forget just which conclusion we reached! Different girls had said the movie, "Barabbus," was terribly bloody so I was prepared for the worst, but it really wasn't bad at all. Karen, Terry and I discussed yearbook matters from 10:00 to 12:00 today. I spent about 45 minutes in Commons (had just missed Fred for lunch) trying to see how many were going to the LLC ice skating party. We cancelled the bus and are taking cars instead.

Met Former Student on Gym Steps - Friday, January 24, 1964

This afternoon I tried to get ahold of Mrs. Dorsey to sign my Narva time sheet and the one for December but I never could. As I left the gym some guy was falling up the steps. Who should it be but Ron Bowman, one of my Iowa buddies from Council Bluffs who transferred to KU this year. He likes it - he's in engineering. I'm trying to determine whether to take a bus or cars to the LLC skating party. Not too many have signed up. I worked tonight and Fred did homework. Evelyn has gone home for tonight and tomorrow. She does so quite often on weekends.

The Status of American Women - Thursday, January 23, 1964

I must wake up and face reality again on something. I'm in sort of a depressed state of mind. I sincerely hope it is all in my mind a notion I had tonight. I just wonder if Fred might have had a can of beer tonight. I should have been able to smell it, but I wasn't sure. Terry Scullin had an article in the Stylus that made it look like the whole Narva staff decided on having the editor of Playboy choose the Narva queen and attendants. Drat it. I should have written to Phyllis again tonight since it's one of my bad days - the way it was for her when she last wrote! I went with Evelyn to Brisch's tonight to get a book. This afternoon the Park College women had a "forum" in the Meetin' House to discuss the status of American women.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Information - Wednesday, January 22, 1964

It didn't take me long to do algebra tonight. I was done by 7:45 - pretty good for me! I finally got around to writing to Phyllis - guess I better finish the letter and mail it. Something is wrong with Fred. He wasn't in the best mood tonight and wasn't hungry for the date nut bars Evelyn and I made. Evelyn has just finished trimming my hair. I wrote letters to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historical Society in Mansfield, Missouri, and the librarian in DeSmet, South Dakota, to see if I could get information for my report on an author. This was another nice day.

Officially Going Steady - Tuesday, January 21, 1964

Fred asked me to go steady with him - to tell the truth, I had more or less taken it for granted that we were all along, but I guess this makes it official. I haven't accomplished much tonight. I wrote out some yearbook picture scheduling notices. If tomorrow's weather is as nice as today's was, we'll take some outside. After I got Mom's letter yesterday asking more about the cat that scratched me, I talked to Mrs. Flaherty about it, and she is convinced that it didn't have rabies. Some of us gathered in Shirley and Ellen's room tonight to read a controversial article on sex in Time, but it didn't contain much that was new! I've got to get my books read for children's lit.

Philosophies of Education - Monday, January 20, 1964

We had an SNEA meeting in the faculty lounge tonight. Dr. Pai led a discussion on personal philosophies of education. He started on his own accord so I didn't have to introduce him. We had a fairly good turnout. Mom sent me an extra letter asking more about the cat that scratched me. I, too, hope it didn't have rabies. I see I'm starting to get behind with school work. When people begin to ask me how I manage to do everything, then I realize I must be doing a lot. But I just take one thing at a time. I'm really living in college - in a way I deprived myself of in high school. Fred is such a tease - the girls up here think a lot of him; he's so much fun.

Lucerne Rose Tea Was a Success - Sunday, January 19, 1964

Fred and I were sitting in the lounge tonight when Vivien stopped by with a copy of the wedding write-up and the white gloves I left in Oklahoma and to let me see the pictures. I think Fred enjoyed looking at them - my expressions were kind of funny, but no worse than some of the others! Fred and I studied at the library for a while tonight. The Lucerne Rose Tea was a real success - even if we had forgotten all about tea cups until 1:30! Luckily there was a quick source - Commons. I can't keep up with everything - time goes so fast. Sometimes I can't even believe I'm me. Life is wonderful. I must write to Phyllis.

Saw "Days of Wine and Roses" - Saturday, January 18, 1964

I'm going to bed early to try to get over my cold. Fred's doing the same. We both were sniffing and blowing our noses after the movie. It was "Days of Wine and Roses." I didn't care for it a whole lot. Fred thought it was depressing. I bought Gilbran's "Spirits Rebellious" and "The Voice of the Master" in paperback before anyone else got them so I'll have them to give to Fred for his birthday February 1. I went down to Parkville this morning and mailed Ann a Park College nightshirt for her birthday. I took out a card at the Platte County Library and got some books for children's lit. I did a little coordinating for the Rose Tea this afternoon, lining up spoons, etc.

Medicine For Two Colds - Friday, January 17, 1964

I worked until almost 10:00 tonight - they were pretty busy at the health center. It's going to feel good to get to bed at 10:30. I got some pills for my cold. Fred went down to Parkville this afternoon and got some Contac and gave me one after geography class. I still sat through children's lit with a drippy nose. I forgot that we were supposed to have some algebra problems ready to do orally in class - ugh! I did some telephoning for SNEA this afternoon. I confirmed one speaker but wasn't able to find out all I needed to about possible field trips. Mrs. Dorsey told Barb Page that the LLCs were by far the best club!?!

Looking For a Book by Kahlil Gilbran - Thursday, January 16, 1964

Here I am playing around with algebra just like I used  to do in high school. It sure brings back memories. I went into Kansas City this afternoon. I stopped in at a new vision center and had my glasses adjusted. I looked everywhere for a book by Kahlil Gilbran for Fred for his birthday, but they were always out of stock or had only The Prophet which he has already. I hope I can have the bookstore order one by February 1. Fred and I both have colds again!! I got 20 out of 25 on the algebra quiz. I lost three points due to sheer carelessness. We had an LLC meeting tonight.

Waiting For the Day - Wednesday, January 15, 1964

I just got back from a two hour meeting in which the judicial councils, deans and Mr. Campanella discussed judiciary problems. I had an ICC meeting tonight, too. The SNEA program committee met with Mr. Carey this afternoon to plan our meetings and speakers for the term. I got three letters of transfer to the LLCs today - two OACs and one ACC. I've been waiting for the day when the LLCs would get transfers from what were then the clubs! I guess this is it. I didn't get to see Fred at 9:30 since our meeting lasted so long.

Attacked By a Cat - Tuesday, January 14, 1964

Time is getting away from me. I think I let Fred in on one of my weaknesses tonight - my inability to make up my mind over something trivial - like whether or not to go to breakfast in the morning (we're going). I was just about to the health center this afternoon when a yellow cat I stopped to pat attacked the back of my left leg and scratched it. Mrs. Flaherty thought it was bad enough to give me a tetanus shot. I hope the insurance forms she filled out cover the $3.00 first aid and $1.00 for the tetanus. That's an expensive cat scratch!

Fred Forgot His Lifesaving Class - Monday, January 13, 1964

I sure do like my classes again this trimester - too bad I got off to such a poor start last trimester. I wish I had time to stop and "count my blessings." I still can't keep up with time. Poor Fred forgot to go to his lifesaving class tonight at 7:00. He was up here till 7:30. He felt so "stupid" about it when he came back at 9:30 to eat the pizza Evelyn and I fixed. Evelyn ate Jim's share since he was at a firemen's meeting. I'm starting to type up some rules for a Narva cover contest. I've got to see Mrs. Dorsey about how much money to give as a prize - and also find out if she ever turned in a time sheet for me. She misplaced mine last month.

Was Told "I Love You" - Sunday, January 12, 1964

We woke up about 9:00 to eat Mrs. Eason's delicious pancakes and bacon. While Babs and I helped her with dishes, Fred, Rick and Mr. Eason shoveled out the driveway and then they drove us back to campus. We got here in time to change clothes for dinner and I reset my hair for 40 minutes. I took some good natured teasing about having eloped with Fred! He has a pretty new suit (tan coat and dark brown pants) that his mother got him for Christmas. Two things happened today that were pretty nice in meaning to me - Mrs. Eason asked Fred to return thanks at breakfast. He also told me, after dinner, that he loved me.

Snowbound Near Bethel, Kansas - Saturday, January 11, 1964

Fred wanted me to meet the Easons, the people with whom he and Karon stay during vacations, and see some movies they took when they were in Hawaii, so Mrs. Eason came and got us and Rick Campbell and Babs Ford about 3:30. But guess what - it has snowed so much that the Easons don't want to drive tonight, so we will have to spend the night here. To say the least, Babs and I are having a slight riot in Mrs. Eason's pajamas and confiscating bobby pins. Luckily Karon had some in her nice room here which we are using. They have a beautiful home in a rural area near Bethel, Kansas, across the river from Parkville. The movies were so neat - but the bulb burned out before we finished. We four "shoveled" snow and walked in it tonight. A light plane crashed into the Telephone Building at 5:45 and killed four people.

Student National Education Association - Friday, January 10, 1964

Classes went well for me today. Last trimester just never was my trimester. I'm not sure I really care for psychology courses as much as I thought I would. I think the individual professors' personalities have a lot to do with it. At any rate, I think I'm going to get more out of studying again. I was elected president of the Student National Education Association at a meeting this afternoon. It shouldn't entail a whole lot of work. I worked tonight so Fred and I decided not to go to the 9:00 movie, although we had thought about it. He colored a picture tonight in the Stephens coloring book. We've displayed some of the girls' pictures on the lounge wall.

First LLC Meeting - Thursday, January 9, 1964

Wayne and I presided over our first LLC meeting tonight. I guess it went all right. No, now that I think about it, I know it was a good meeting. The LLCs have really shaped up to be a leading club on campus. But it's up to Wayne and me to keep it that way. I worked algebra problems until Fred came over and helped me finish them. I baked some more cookies for him tonight. Nancy and I went to Parkville this afternoon. I haven't given Mrs. Busch so much business in years as I have this week. The newspaper episode sort of backfired when Nickel figured out what was up - and also threw water on the girls after they had finished their "project."

Cookies, Pizza and Date Nut Bars - Wednesday, January 8, 1964

Fred gave me a cute little stuffed skunk holding some flowers. We named it Flower. This afternoon Evelyn and I went down to Parkville and got some bake and serve cookies, pizza mix and date nut bar mix as evening snacks for Fred and Jim. I baked some of the cookies tonight. This dorm is up to tricks and good times again. Some of the girls - we can't all go - are going to go down to Nickel early in the morning and fill their porch with newspapers. We had an ICC meeting at 6:30 and at 10:30 a dorm meeting. I also worked algebra and am now going to bed at 11:40.

Gave Vivien Her Hors d'oeuvre Knives - Tuesday, January 7, 1964

I don't think I'm going to like algebra very well. Terrible to have a negative attitude from the beginning (brought on by what so many kids have said about poor Miss Konkle). I'll only hope for the best! In organization and administration of elementary schools we're going to have to do group projects of curriculum outlines. This afternoon I did various "errands," including getting some of the LLC materials from Flo. I tried getting started on algebra tonight. Fred is so nice. Vivien was up here a minute tonight. I gave her the hors d'oeuvre knives Mom got her. She's going to let me use her algebra book. I spent $13.50 for geography books and then didn't buy the world atlas.

An Impromptu LLC Brig Party - Monday, January 6, 1964

From 3:15 to 11:00 I was with Fred and at the same time completed plans for and helped carry out an LLC Brig party that Nancy and I conjured up at 2:45. Wonders never cease. Fred had a real nice Christmas with his mother here. She was getting married today in California - I don't know any of the circumstances. We walked down to Parkville, I mailed a yearbook and Fred got some coffee, back to Copley where he gave me the last third of a can of Hawaiian nuts. Bowling, he won the first game, I won the second. I went through registration from 10:00 - 11:30. I got out of paying the $9.45 from last semester (coming back early for the Narva) but ended up paying for a $7.50 library book that Doug Meng couldn't find. Books for just two courses came to $22.50.

Back to Good Old Stephens - Sunday, January 5, 1964

Back to good old Stephens - my train was an hour late leaving but made up a half hour and got to Kansas City at 11:00. I met a friend of Rog Brown - can't think of his name - and Rog drove us back to campus, along with Trudy Henderson. Evelyn was here - since 4:00 this afternoon - as is almost everyone else. At church we had the annual meeting. Virginia was voted assistant superintendent. Dean Luers had nominated her as superintendent to run against him in that election! Mom and the girls took me to Fairfield. It was such a nice vacation, and I feel as if it's going to be a good year ahead.

A Coloring Book and Crayons - Saturday, January 4, 1964

We went to town this afternoon to wash and shop. I got a gray pleated skirt, a new pair of black flats, and a new blue pin bonnet. Up at Griggs's I bought a coloring book and crayons, just for the fun of it, to take back to Stephens. Oh, yes, some erasable bond paper in Washington, too, in case I get around to typing my essay. Dr. Smith's secretary called me this morning to say my glasses hadn't come yet so I wasn't able to get those. They'll have to mail them to me. Virginia cut my hair a little tonight. Mom got Vivien and Charlie a set of six little party knives from the family. They'll like them - a good match for their Dansk.

Cookies, Candy and Popcorn Balls - Friday, January 3, 1964

The girls in Grandma's Sunday School class went out there this afternoon to make cookies, candy and popcorn balls for a children's home and the Veterans Hospital. Then Mom (Daddy stayed home since he felt as if he was getting the flu), Peters, Booths, Johnsons and Florence came out for a "Recognition Day" supper for Betty, Phyllis and me. I'm still bothered by my cold. I just haven't been doing much of anything these last few days. I guess it's okay - I guess I'm supposed to be relaxing. I do get pretty wound up sometimes - like when I'm trying to finish a resource unit outline.

Such a Pretty Diary - Thursday, January 2, 1964

This is such a pretty diary. I'll have the urge to say so every night until I write it, so I might as well do so tonight. I didn't do much today except nurse my cold and sneezes. It's a good thing I didn't have this cold during the wedding, and I hope it's over by the time I get back to school. I saw in the latest Stylus that a two weeks' trip to Mexico is being offered for the best Park College student's paper on "What I Can Do to Make Park College More Cosmopolitan," so I'm trying my luck. I've written one draft, but I don't know where I'll go from there. Mom has gone to a  ceramics class at Isabelle's.

A Lot of Diary Pages - Wednesday, January 1, 1964

It's always fun to begin a new diary, just as it is to finish each one the previous night, at the beginning and end of a year. I've written a lot of diary pages; but the speed at which one is completed is unbelievable - a diary, that is (and the corresponding year). This was a leisurely New Year's Day. Aside from taking down the church Christmas tree and watching the parades and games, we did little else. Illinois beat Washington in the Rose Bowl and Texas beat Navy in the Cotton Bowl, Virginia went to the Escorts dance in Washington tonight and then will go to Bonnie's for a slumber party. Phyllis went to the dance with Betty. Ann says to record that she is reading a book. A terrible cold finally caught up with me.
