About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

We Discussed Education in the Middle East - Monday, March 30, 1964

Dr. Patton had a good discussion on education in the Middle East at the SNEA meeting at Hilltop House tonight. I think we've had a nice series of programs. It's too bad there haven't been more there to enjoy them. I guess most people don't do anything they don't want to do. I got up at 6:00 to do algebra but should have stayed in bed. She gave us an extension until 1:00 and I still didn't get some of them. I've been making some more "spills" for my children's lit book.

Optimism, Determinism, Abundant Life - Sunday, March 29, 1964

I enjoyed this Easter Day. To begin with, Evelyn and I went with a group of kids, the Pattons, Gehrenbecks, and Edwardses to Alfalfa Point for a sunrise Easter service. The bright orange ball did rise indeed - a beautiful sight. The Stephens cat went along, but nobody thought too much of it when he didn't return with us. So at 5:45 this evening Shirley and I set out looking for him. After calling his name, "Here, Socrates!" and walking for an hour he appeared just as we were giving up hope - and the orange sun was just setting on the opposite side of Alfalfa Point. Dr. Patton had a good sermon today - about optimism and determinism and enjoyment of an abundant life. It was cold today.

Children's Library Today, Fritz's Tonight - Saturday, March 28, 1964

I spent the entire day in Kansas City, going in on the 8:00 bus and coming back on the 6:00. With the exception of an hour until it opened at 9:30 and time enough to buy lunch, get a new skirt at Macy's, and buy some cookies for my supper, I was at the children's library reviewing books. I guess I've given the whole day to children's lit since this evening I tried some illustrations with shoe polish for my book, Spills. Bob Kendrick wanted someone to go with him, Chris, John, Doug, Michael and Armando to Fritz's for Armando's birthday, so I went. I had a Coke and a ham sandwich.

Hope to Work for the Journal Again This Summer - Friday, March 27, 1964

I don't exactly like sitting in the dorm, but I guess this time it's the fate to which I've resigned myself - after all, it was as much my choice as not to break up with Fred. I'll have to get busy - this is a Leap Year! Mom and Dad want me to take the part-time work at the Journal so I wrote and told Charlie I was interested. I hope I get a good grade on the geography test. I studied so much for it that by the time 1:00 came, it seemed like late afternoon. I took the yearbook picture of the music department profs this afternoon, then hurried down to play volleyball.

John Will Have Leg Cast for Six Months - Thursday, March 26, 1964

I've read enough geography for one day and night. I may be sorry, but I'm going to bed. I've got time tomorrow. I may even skip government. I've got to ace this test. Dr. Dunham was at the health center tonight. John's getting along okay with his broken leg, but I guess he'll have to have the cast on for sixth months. We had an LLC meeting. There was a misunderstanding about the slate of officers drawn up, so there will be more nominations. The student council installation and state of the union speech took place in assembly this morning.

Lois Daniels of the Circle Theatre Talked - Wednesday, March 25, 1964

Maybe a new approach to an algebra problem will sink in while I'm writing. I've more or less "passed" the evening. First I went to the band concert and stayed to help Tom get pictures. Then Evelyn and I baked some "cone cakes" with little chicken favors for Jane's and Kelmie's "unbirthdays." At Women's Forum this afternoon Lois Daniels of the Circle Theatre talked. I got a C- on the teaching of arithmetic test, seriously jeopardizing my slimmest chance for the Dean's List. I talked to Dean Gibson this morning about a case that may result from the nature of the library search.

Suggested Quotation Marks for "Hell Week" - Tuesday, March 24, 1964

We were installed as the new members of the student council and had our first meeting tonight. If "Hell Week" is seen in quotation marks from now until the name is eventually changed, I can consider it my suggestion. I think we're going to have a good council. We also had an ICC meeting this evening. The OACs asked the LLCs to their hayride April 11 as an effort to encourage joint club activity. In the last three days I've had someone mention to me the possibility of my serving as Narva editor, Stephens president, ICC chairman. It's nice to feel wanted. As a first-month college freshman I couldn't have dreamed I could eventually have as much influence as I must have.

The WJC Had Our First Case Tonight - Monday, March 23, 1964

Algebra again! Of course, if I'd stop extracurricular activities I might be able to get it done sooner. Tonight the WJC acted on the case of four girls who had taken books and periodicals from the library. This was only Karen's third case all year, on her last night in office. The new student council had our picture taken tonight for the Platte County Dispatch. They [Children's Literature class] seemed to like the talk I gave about Laura Ingalls Wilder and Garth Williams. I'm not sure how well I did on the teaching of arithmetic test. The ACCs beat us in volleyball.

Stephens Girls Had Dinner at the Wishbone - Sunday, March 22, 1964

The Stephens girls went to the Wishbone for a steak dinner tonight. Evelyn drove a car for Barb, Margaret, Judy and me. It was a good meal and a lot of fun. After we got back I went to the library to read a little more about Laura Ingalls Wilder and Garth Williams for my report tomorrow. Evelyn and I went to Fran's recital this afternoon. I was at Herr House till 2:00 for yearbook picture taking. I really miss Fred after having "gone with" him for four months, but it's got to be better this way. I just hope my moodiness doesn't effect my studying.

A Broken Leg in a Soccer Game - Saturday, March 21, 1964

Some of the LLCs went chocolate bar selling this morning. Wayne and I sold 40 between us in Parkville and in the neighborhood out by Evelyn's house. Diana, Peggy and Terry went in our car, too. Altogether the club has sold about 120 of 1200 bars. I was in the process of selling Stan Shedd one at the soccer game when 15 feet from us we heard a terrible pop and saw John Garrett in terrible pain. Stan was told to get his car so he quickly handed me a dollar and I shoved two candy bars into his hand. But he only wanted one, so Becky handed him 50 cents in change. John's leg was broken - almost the same spot on the field where Hal broke his three years ago. Nickel won the game. I saw "West Side Story" with Nancy.

First Orchid for a Last Date - Friday, March 20, 1964

I've just said "goodbye" to one of the nicest boys I've ever known. Fred and I had a wonderful time at the Inter-Club Council dance at Mirror Lake Country Club. But we don't plan to go with each other from now on. I'm afraid I'm going to miss him, but it will be better this way. Club royalty this year were Dee Morrow and Steve Shugart, ACC; Pam Wright and Archie Font, LEC; Flo and Wayne, LLC; Karen Garner (again) and Dick Peeke, OAC; and Nancy Rohlfing and Terry Brown, PCC. Bonnie and I and some of the freshmen went out to decorate for the "Emerald Isle" theme this afternoon. Fred gave me a beautiful orchid - my first.

Went with Fred to Hootenanny - Thursday, March 19, 1964

Fred took me to the hootenanny tonight. The Outsiders, who were here for Harvest Festival, performed. They had it in Hawley lounge because of the rain. We had a big talk about what we've been doing to antagonize each other. I pointed out that although a guy may resent a girl making him take her to the big dance and then dropping him, a girl likes to know where she stands (i.e., this business of not letting me know whether he's coming up for supper, or at 9:30, etc.) He's interested in making a "clean break." Well, fine, but let's at least be civil since we do plan to go to the dance. The third graders at Southeast School enjoyed the story I read to them. Carolyn drove out this afternoon. Beth, Jean and Rosemary also went.

Went with Rosemary to Madrigal Concert - Wednesday, March 18, 1964

I went with Rosemary to the madrigal concert tonight. The LLCs played the PCCs in volleyball. We won one of the three games. The LLCs got the candy bars that we're selling for the student union fund-raising campaign. I sold two to Mr. Penniston who came to help us pick out the Narva cover tonight. Fred did an interesting job of ignoring me tonight in Commons after I had been playing basketball with him and Don Hinkle before our LLC-PCC game. Don brought his hand down on my glasses and bent them. Fred's ignoring me doesn't really bother me if he thinks it does, yet it is rather unnecessary, I'd say.

Elected Women's Judicial Council Chairman - Tuesday, March 17, 1964

I was elected Women's Judicial Council chairman in the election today. Kathy Rickard was my opponent. Chuck Girrard got the Men's Judicial Council chairmanship over Hans Van Naerssen. Gary Sorrell got the majority of the votes for student council president over Terry Scullin. There will have to be a run-off between Liz Ralston and Jim Hunter for vice president. Dr. Robert Nunley from KU gave two geography lectures today, and I also went to his folk singing session tonight in the Meetin' House. I spent most of today's spare minutes doing yesterday's algebra assignment. Phyllis sent her firsthand account of Tarkio's fire.

Mr. Gatton Was Our SNEA Speaker - Monday, March 16, 1964

I've just returned from a night of campaigning. No wonder presidential candidates become physically exhausted. Tomorrow will tell the outcome of my efforts. Mr. Gatton, Evelyn's dad, spoke on "Counseling and Discipline" at our SNEA meeting tonight. From 3:00 to 4:00 I helped Mr. DeCloud with Narva picture taking. It was so disappointing that only 28 showed up after he made a special trip back out here. I skipped government and the teaching of arithmetic classes but finally got my geography paper finished.

We Will Be Breaking Up - Sunday, March 15, 1964

Here I go again. It is late Sunday evening and I don't have my geography paper or algebra done. Sooner or later Fred and I will be breaking up. We've decided that we don't really have much in common. However, we've both learned a lot from going with each other. It seems strange not to feel bad about it, but I guess this is the best way rather than one or the other of us being hurt. Each of us was trying to make the other over, we're each something of an idealist and so forth. I do think I've profited from my first romance.

Boyfriend Troubles - Saturday, March 14, 1964

Fred and I almost came to the parting of our ways tonight. As he says, "Nothing ventured, nothing gained," but I'm certainly not going to talk with Ellen and George sitting in the lounge. It was too cold to stay outside with just my light jacket on (he almost left me at the door when I didn't respond to his inquiry, "Is anything wrong?" I must be some kind of a hypocrite. I hope some day Fred learns a few things that will help him. The same goes for me. I went to Kansas City this afternoon. I finally picked out a light beige spring coat. I got some books (music and social studies for teachers) at a real savings.

Nickel's Dog, Dammit, Died Yesterday Evening - Friday, March 13, 1964

It's raining a nice, peaceful rain. It was so warm and still walking back from the health center tonight. It would have been nice to go for a walk with Fred. However, he didn't suggest it so we just sat in the lounge as usual. Maybe I should have been bold and suggested it. He does love to be contrary. Evelyn went up to see the doctor tonight and we had eight others. Kathy Webb has the mumps. Nickel's beloved dog, Dammit, died yesterday evening. They think he may have been poisoned. I tried running off copies of my platform this afternoon but couldn't get the duplicator to work so only did a few.

Gave WJC Chairman Campaign Speech - Thursday, March 12, 1964

This algebra. I've been working on it for I don't know how long and still have a few problems I'm not sure about. I've had quite a few comments on my campaign speech that I gave this morning in assembly, so I guess it was okay. I was the first to speak but that way I had it over with. It really wasn't bad at all - after all, these people are my friends. Shirley, Nancy and Kathy gave a shower for Jane in the lounge this afternoon. There weren't any classes because of pre-registration day. Some of us went to Mrs. Morrill's for Women's Forum tonight. Two League of Women Voters members were there.

Went to Kansas City and Saw "Tom Jones" - Wednesday, March 11, 1964

Some of the LLCs went to Kansas City tonight to see "Tom Jones," the movie that has ten Academy Awards nominations. We had enough going to take three cars. I went in the one driven by Paula Hansmier's brother. The paper said it started at 7:30 but it must have started at 7:00. This I found out from Shirley and Ted after we got back and they figured out we had missed a fourth of it. It was ridiculous that we didn't stay to see what we had missed. I must need my sleep. Mrs. Steelman and I worked on our area of our group project this afternoon. I made a poster for the ICC dance ticket sale and started numbering programs with a gadget from the library.

Finished Campaign Speech, Made Posters - Tuesday, March 10, 1964

I've got a headache from writing, typing and going strong. I wrote out my platform this afternoon and had it "approved" by Pat, Karon and Karen. I typed it tonight so George could have a copy for the Stylus. I also made two campaign posters. Someone already tore the notepad from the one that said "It's noteworthy ....." I thought I had done horribly on this morning's algebra quiz, but tonight at the algebra review session I found out that my 17 was one of the two second highest papers. I'm glad I went. Now I feel more confident toward Gary as the new student grader.

Wrote Campaign Speech During Lecture - Monday, March 9, 1964

I'm tired of doing algebra so I'm going to get my seven hours from 11:00 to 6:00. Evelyn and I both got up at 4:30. I finished my paper, did a little algebra, and started my maps, which I finished from 10:00-11:00. I was able to do algebra during class since it was a question period. Evelyn and I went to a political science lecture that Dr. Neighbor suggested we attend tonight. I spent most of the time writing my campaign speech. Poor Fred's going to think I'm trying to "avoid him." Our half hour tonight was pretty profitable, however. I'm suddenly trying to see this whole thing from a different perspective.

Will Have to Get Up at 4:00 - Sunday, March 8, 1964

It's one of those nights again. Since I don't have my government done, my algebra or geography maps finished, I guess I'll have to get up at 4:00. Since Evelyn wants to use the text, I guess she'll stay up tonight and do hers. Ridiculous, after a whole weekend! This just hasn't been my day. I've been thinking about the boys at Tarkio whose frame dorm burned early Saturday morning. I'll be anxious to hear details from Phyllis. I "got yelled at" for letting some grease burn in a pan I was going to pop corn in - I said I thought I'd give Tarkio a little competition. I didn't see much of Fred today.

LLC Scavenger Hunt and Square Dance - Saturday, March 7, 1964

The LLC scavenger hunt and square dance were a lot of fun but exhausting. Fred is so hard to get along with at times. I think he likes to be the "star," and he likes to be contrary, too. Several times when things got goofed up during the square dance he would have the circle almost mad. He didn't come till 10:00 because he went to a youth banquet in Platte City to give a talk on Hawaii. I had lunch at Gattons and then we went to the Antioch shopping center. I got a navy rayon and silk jumper and polka-dot blouse for Easter. There was a news bulletin this afternoon that one of the boys' dorms at Tarkio burned.

Slow Dancing, Fast Dancing With Fred - Friday, March 6, 1964

I went to a party at Copley tonight. I sure like dancing with Fred. I was even game for one fast dance in which he worked up a sweat. I've got to learn how better. I worked tonight, too. I didn't quite finish the algebra test, although some other kids didn't either. It was kind of hard to think of things to write for the government test. At midterm I have C's in government and algebra and S's in everything else. The Board of Student Publications and Narva staff met this afternoon at 4:00 but I only had to stay 15 minutes. I've decided to run for WJC Chairman so I'm getting signatures on my petition.

Mr. Reynolds Liked My Outline and Question - Thursday, March 5, 1964

I have both a government and an algebra test tomorrow and Evelyn has government and children's literature tests. I'm beginning to get tired of studying government. After I wrote my outline so fast last Monday, Mr. Reynolds wrote on mine that it was one of the best he received and it looked as if my paper had great possibilities. He also stopped me this morning to say he liked my question last night. Wow. Fred and I walked down to Parkville this afternoon. I mailed Virginia her present. I got a B+ on the organization and administration test.

Asked Dr. Bentley Glass a Question - Wednesday, March 4, 1964

I've just spent most of a day pursuing outside interests within the liberal arts tradition. I went to the library to find out more about snail fever (schistosomiasis) when the question arose when I was trying to think of something to ask Dr. Bentley Glass, Johns Hopkins visiting geneticist, for extra credit for geography at the president's house following tonight's lecture. Thanks to a referral by Dr. Hamilton to an article in Scientific American and Dr. Beatley's mention of it in his lecture, I think I "scored" with my question on sickle-cell hemoglobin. Mom wrote that [my cousin] Martin Estep has cystic fibrosis of the pancreas.

Ideas for a Book and a Poster - Tuesday, March 3, 1964

I've just been coming up with all these original ideas - I hope I get to use them - as part of my children's book about Spills and "You've got to HAND it to McDowell" with a hand of "cards" (my pictures) in case I run for proportional representative. Fred didn't come up tonight but called to say he had a lot of homework and also a headache. I went to the algebra review session. I got up at 5:00 again this morning and now I'm getting to the place where words and lines jump when I look at them so maybe I should go to bed. I sent for some Laura Ingalls Wilder materials.

Had a Successful SNEA Meeting - Monday, March 2, 1964

No one can do their algebra so I guess I don't need to feel alone. I got up at 5:00 and finished reading my book at 7:00. I wrote the outline from 10:00-11:00. Our SNEA meeting tonight was very worthwhile. Mr. Gioia, Park Hill world history teacher and Park graduate, spoke on teachers' professional organizations and obligations. We had a few more there than usual, too, although for a while I wondered if we would. I baked Fred some gingerbread tonight. He enjoyed looking at the feature articles I wrote last summer - especially the one about Carol Whetstine and girls track. Judy Slemmons scored 64 points in a basketball game back home.

Seen With Fred in Lounge - Sunday, March 1, 1964

Gee, I can't win! I don't have my book read (100 pages yet to go) for which the outline of the paper is due tomorrow. I was sitting in the lounge with Fred at 10:15 (after having said at 9:50 that I had that to do and probably should go do it) when who should walk in but Mr. Reynolds with some papers for Cheryl to grade. I could have died. That means my paper`better be good and that I better get on the stick. Fred went to Forum tonight and Evelyn and I went to see the movie, "Hiroshima, Mon Amour." This was a beautiful day. Fred brought his book, O Ye Jigs and Juleps, for me to read. It's so cute.

Went to Play, "The Apparitions" - Saturday, February 29, 1964

We went to the play, "The Apparitions," tonight. It was put on as part of the Latin American series. The scenery was excellent, and it was a good play. Karen and I worked on the yearbook this morning. We finally created our own cover. We finished our first layout. I can't remember what she had said she would do when that day came. I read my book for geography this afternoon. I wrote to Mr. Morris about working at the Journal office again this summer. It was windy like "in like a lion," but I guess the wind didn't know it was February 29 and not March 1.
