About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Met Our Supervisors for Student Teaching - Friday, September 11, 1964

We finally got our call about student teaching, so Evelyn, Mrs. Steelman and I went out to Southeast Elementary School at 1:00 to meet Mr. Fincher, the principal, and our supervising teachers. I will be under Miss Dyer. It is the school where we read our stories for children's lit last spring. Kathy Webb will also be teaching - under Mrs. Gauhey, the one I sort of wanted. (Shirley Stith had her.) I think she would have liked to have me, too, but I'll like Miss Dyer, too. Eleven of us Stephens girls got up at 3:00 and waited on Hawley's front porch roof till the goons came at 3:45. It's been a really good "Hell Week" so far.

Seniors Saw Our Fourth Goon Squad Entry - Thursday, September 10, 1964

We seniors watched our fourth entry of the goon squad into Upper Commons tonight. This freshman class is really organized. Just so they don't get carried away and someone gets hurt. At 8:00 this morning I went to talk to Mrs. Dorsey about the king and queen and formed my committee: Evelyn, Jim Ader and Charlie Beech. A cool breeze is blowing. It's so neat after the hot weather we've been having. Mike Joseph's Stylus was really good for the first issue. Sinan's article that he wrote last night at 10:30 was in. We shaded with crayons in art class - more fun!

Family Plans to Come for Harvest Festival - Wednesday, September 9, 1964

It's one of those nights when it's about too hot to sleep anyway, so I've been up writing a letter home. They plan to come down for Harvest Festival! I'm going to be chairman of the king and queen committee. Dee and Steve met with the committee heads tonight, and it sounds as if things will be good. Rosemary, Judy and I went to the J.R. tonight and ended up going with Sinan, George Johnson, Bob Kendrick, Carolyn Reed and and a Park graduate to Fritz's. At 10:00 we came back for a Stephens party for the freshmen on the floor and a get acquainted party for Dee. Then we took the guys some left over potato chips.

Spoke to Freshman Class About Judicial Councils - Tuesday, September 8, 1964

We've just elected Dee Morrow to fill the Stephens vacancy left when one of our previously elected members didn't come back. Margaret is the new secretary. I think we just had a successful house meeting. I spoke to the entire freshman class about the Men's and Women's Judicial Councils tonight at the student government assembly. Then the student council met to discuss some of the problems with the freshmen and initiation. Between times I dashed off something on "Methodology" for philosophy. I think Mr. Chronister is giving me too much work to do as "Dr. Pai's secretary."

With Liz, Spoke About Initiation Week - Monday, September 7, 1964

In a few minutes Liz and I are going as student council representatives to tell the freshmen they have to be in their rooms at 10:30 for part of freshman initiation week. Evelyn and I were going down to the education department to study tonight, but I found I lacked one of the keys for getting in. We went to the library then. Tonight I stopped to visit with Doris and Kathy, two of my freshman advisees, but I didn't find Gail. Mr. Meyers liked my definition of philosophy when he called on me to give it in class. I'm typing some dittos for Mr. Chronister.

The LLCs Have a Good Group of New Members - Sunday, September 6, 1964

The LLC party at the Careys was quite successful and a lot of fun. We seem to have gotten a pretty good group of new members, especially boys, which we needed. I did my philosophy paper tonight on What is Philosophy? I at least played around with it. I talked briefly with a Stephens alumna who is married to a former Park soccer coach. I told her to get in touch with Pat Frost who is also concerned about what alumni can do for Stephens. Being president of the women's honor dorm is something that I'm still getting used to. But things are going well.

New Dress Regulations: Heels or Flats for Soccer - Saturday, September 5, 1964

It was nice to have my mom "get me up" this morning with another phone call about the car insurance. They're changing companies. I've just enjoyed a leisurely day being myself and not becoming involved in a thousand and one things connected with Park College. They'll pick up again soon enough. Today's big gripe was the new dress regulations. None of us can hack heels or flats for a soccer game! I started doing a little to fix up our private Stephens lounge in room 415. My philosophy book is interesting.

Have Been Reading "What is Philosophy?" - Friday, September 4, 1964

I've been reading "What is Philosophy?" for Introduction to Philosophical Thinking. It's interesting. I borrowed Barb Page's copy of The Prophet, so I think I'll read some of that. I waited 45 minutes with Dick Hobson to see Mr. Hougland about our car permits. We finally got in just at 5:00. Evelyn and Rosemary went with me out to Karen's apartment to see the yearbook. She's supposed to have it finished in the morning. It should be pretty good.

Will Like Teaching of Music and Teaching of Art - Thursday, September 3, 1964

Evelyn and I drove to Riverside this afternoon to a body shop to get an estimate of my damage - only $7.50 including labor! Then we went to the Red X and got a cake and things for punch for my Stephens birthday party for Judy Cox. I got the car insurance form done (luckily got ahold of the lady this morning) and sent home with a "letter." I think I'm going to like Mr. Chronister's teaching of music and Mrs. Bender's teaching of art. We had a good opening convocation. Evelyn and I walked up to the LLC party at Alfalfa Point tonight.

Today Was First One Thing, Then Another - Wednesday, September 2, 1964

My day began with a telephone call about some Stephens key mix-ups and ended with the LLC serenade. I took receipts for freshman beanies for an hour. I went down to Parkville this afternoon to get some kitchen supplies, then worked till 4:00. I understand I was "introduced" at the student organizations meeting tonight as Women's Judicial Council Chairman, but I wasn't aware that I should be there. I'm trying to get my car insurance figured out, but tonight I couldn't get ahold of the lady, whose tail light I bumped into, where she is visiting in Smithville.
