About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

"Housing" Part of Indian Unit Went Well - Monday, October 12, 1964

It's always a nice feeling after Harvest Festival that all of your energies can be (or should be) applied to homework. The king and queen committee work was rather long and involved. I got along well with the "housing" part of my Indian unit. I'm pretty much into my "natural ways" as a teacher now, too. I can't believe that this is our fifth week already. I feel as if this was a "day nothing happened." Everything was going so fast up to this point - now a moment's lull leaves me with a feeling of anticlimax or something.

Mom, Dad, Virginia and Ann Left After Dinner - Sunday, October 11, 1964

I came back and got ready for church while Mom, Dad, Virginia and Ann went back to Waid's for a quick breakfast. Then we went to church in the chapel. Dr. Patton had a very nice sermon that included "Park College and what it can do for you." After dinner they got started back after a fast but enjoyable visit. I then started rounding up things for the education department open house and gave Bonnie the last minute help she needed. Not too many people showed up, not even education majors, but oh well. It rained again on the Sunday after a beautiful Harvest Festival Saturday.

Nancy and Glenn are Queen and King - Saturday, October 10, 1964

Mom, Dad, Virginia and Ann got here at 10:00 this morning. I'm staying with them at the Trail's End Motel in Riverside tonight since I didn't go to the dance. We went out to the school this morning, and I took them up to see the education department. After lunch we got things "ready to go" for the king and queen crowning ceremony, and Evelyn and I helped in the area of the parade line-up. In a colorful halftime crowning ceremony the results were: Nancy and Glenn, queen and king; Kathy and Gary, first attendants; and Leslie and Hans, second attendants. We beat Tabor, 2-0.

So Far the LLC Float is Coming Along Nicely - Friday, October 9, 1964

The LLC float is coming along quite nicely in comparison with other floats - so far! This should be a nice Harvest Festival. With classes not being called off though and having it two weeks early, it is really upon us with our hardly knowing it. Whew! We went to North Kansas City after school and got some drapery material. It's beige with white, gold, aqua and black print - so we decided to have new drapes in our room and "donated" my white ones to the lounge.

King and Queen Assembly was Enjoyable - Thursday, October 8, 1964

The king and queen assembly went very nicely and everyone seemed to enjoy it. We really have a good group of candidates: Leslie Innes, Flo Ito, Rosemary Kellner, Barb Page, Kathy Rickard, and Nancy Rohlfing; Jim Hunter, Dave Mogle, Glenn Petrie, Gary Sorrell, Roger Rikkola, and Hans Van Naerssen. It was hard to vote and will be equally hard to predict the finalists. Stephens lounge is finally beginning to take shape with our chair covered and couch from Brisch's matching - also Jean's chair. Evelyn and I went to school in the afternoon since we were here for the assembly this morning.

Candidates' Activities and Hometowns Are on a Stencil - Wednesday, October 7, 1964

I just drew my self-portrait for art. I think I look better than I drew myself...but!?! I got the ballot for the king and queen candidates typed tonight on a long stencil, activities and hometowns included. Today I've had to deal with a lot of petty little problems such as dates for candidates, their other obligations and so forth. On the way back from school we stopped to look at Brisch's couch at Gattons. I guess we'll use that along with a chair Jean Oxborrow is letting us have. I hope the fact that the folks are coming for Harvest Festival can serve as my reason for not writing home this week.

Three Events to be Responsible for This Weekend - Tuesday, October 6, 1964

Tonight I gave Dee a birthday party (chips and dip) since she wasn't in Stephens when the rest of us drew names. I typed up some worksheets for my Indian unit and colored two "pictures." I can't believe that I can have these things to be responsible for this weekend: king and queen candidates, education department open house, and Stephens lounge. I finally got Mr. Chronister's letters finished for him. Evelyn and I went down to Parkville after education seminar (Dr. Pai wasn't there) to order Harvest Festival flowers.

Typed Candidates' Activities, Wrote Letters to Each - Monday, October 5, 1964

This is going to be a crazily busy week. Tonight I typed up the activities for the twelve candidates and also wrote letters to each one. I have only been able to tell about half of them that they are candidates - it's hard to catch them alone. Mr. Chronister is about to run me ragged with everything he would like me to do. We are still calling furniture companies and doing everything we can to get lounge furniture by Saturday. Thankfully the student council meeting was short tonight. There must be a "method" to my "madness!"

Kay Has Decided She Can't be a Queen Candidate - Sunday, October 4, 1964

Evelyn and I took advantage of the beautiful fall weather and walked to Alfalfa Point and Falling Springs this afternoon. The leaves are gorgeous this year. This evening I went to the Sunday evening forum (having received a special request to be there) to discuss its purposes and accomplishments. I worked this evening on reading lesson plans but didn't get to my unit outline. I hope Miss Dyer doesn't care. Kay has decided she can't very well be a candidate, so we'll have to replace her.

Looked at Furniture for Lounge with Judy and Evelyn - Saturday, October 3, 1964

This morning Evelyn, Judy and I went in to Kansas City and looked at furniture possibilities for our lounge at the Salvation Army and two used furniture stores. Judy is going to talk to her "mother's boyfriend" who has leads to some furniture and compare results. I had a "time" driving all over KC with Evelyn and Judy directing me! After we let Judy out at her house, Evelyn and I went to see Margaret and Ellen (Hans wasn't home) where they live now off The Paseo and to pick up a dress for Evelyn to wear next weekend. I then left her in NKC. The LLCs actually beat the ACCs 13-12 in softball.

Committed to Being a "Sophist" in Philosophy - Friday, October 2 1964

I went to the show, "Seven Days in May," with Bob McAnally. "For the record," that means August (of all months!) was the only month in the last year (since November) in which I didn't have a date. Now what should I establish as a "goal"? I had the spelling lesson, a worksheet, and the Weekly Reader this afternoon. Today seemed to go very well. Maybe I'll make a teacher! In introduction to philosophical thinking I more or less committed myself as being a "Sophist" - whatever the outcome of that may be!

Kay is Queen Candidate But Will Miss Ceremony - Thursday, October 1, 1964

It was bad enough when Dee overheard Miss Anderson in public relations call Kay and ask her what her hometown paper was and figured out that she must be a queen candidate. But then when we found out she'll be gone next Saturday to be in Sue Birrell's wedding, things really flew. Dee, Liz, Kay, Evelyn and I finally decided that if Kay is a candidate, it should remain as such. She's going to miss the crowning ceremony, but she'll fly back in time for the dance. I don't believe it. I got along quite well with the top reading group. I typed letters for Mr. Chronister until I could hardly see straight.
