About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Went for Walk, Talked on Bench with Seth Tonight - Friday, February 19, 1965

Seth called me this evening to see if I'd like to go for a walk and, of course, I did. We walked down past the soccer fields and back through Parkville, then sat on the bench in front of Mackay and talked. It is a nice night. I'm glad to have the interest in astronomy and space that I do. Maybe I could say that Seth and I "talk space" as Nic and I used to "talk shop." Evelyn would say that Fred and I "talked weather" - I'll say we "talked studies" (another "s"). Mr. Wetherill said I could do a sociometric study, for my project, dealing with an elementary school classroom.

A Nice American Society of University Women Tea - Thursday, February 18, 1965

Margaret, Leslie and I from Stephens and a number of other senior girls went to a tea sponsored by the American Society of University Women, Parkville Branch, at the Presbyterian Church tonight. It was very nice. Dr. Bergman from the English Language Institute showed slides of India. This afternoon I took the news release for our remedial reading program to Miss Anderson. With a few minor changes, maybe we will be on our way to a summer program during June. I sent a letter to Phyllis, went to my mailbox, and there was one from her. Seth called me last night to ask if I'd like to go to a party at Bob and Sally Lastick's Saturday evening.

We Went Over the Stephens Constitution - Wednesday, February 17, 1965

I ate supper with Seth, having not seen him since Monday noon. I wonder how long one goes without seeing someone on campus that you aren't particularly thinking about. I had a meeting with the house council tonight to go over parts of the constitution we are rewriting. By the time I wrote home (and made Phyllis a carbon copy), I didn't get much else done yet tonight. Dr. Pai wasn't there for philosophy class (he was having a tooth pulled), and Mr. Wetherill was attempting to grade papers through most of our social psych discussion. I got a B- on mine.

Park Will Drop Summer Term After This Summer - Tuesday, February 16, 1965

Today in assembly Dr. Hamilton announced that, after much consideration, the college has decided to drop the summer trimester after this summer and go back to the two semesters basis rather than have three trimesters a year. This is my luck after three years of putting up with the three trimesters plan. Some of the kids would like to see the 15-week fall and spring terms remain instead of going back to 18-week terms. I feel at least partly due the credit for getting Terry Osuga to run for WJC chairman and Winnie for vice president of the student council. Dr. Meyer talked with me today. He said Dr. Pai had said he could come to hear me give my report on Russian education.

Saw Seth's Slides of New York World's Fair - Monday, February 15, 1965

Evelyn and I got up at 6:15 - she to study history, and I got most of my paper written. I finished it just before time to go to class. I ate lunch with Seth and he had some slides of the New York World's Fair with him to show me. The student council meeting didn't last long tonight. I have been reading developmental psych. I've got to get busy and read, read, read in all of my courses. I also owe letters, and, as is so easy in times like these, I am just behind, period.

Seth Talked About Theology in Peanuts - Sunday, February 14, 1965

I went to the library tonight to take notes for my philosophy paper. On the way back I saw Seth go into the J.R. so I walked through and he walked me back. He's really nice to talk with. He is a Westinghouse Talent Search and Ford Foundation scholarships winner. He may be Jewish, but he can still talk about theological implications in Peanuts and relate it to a Biblical passage. Portland State beat Kent State on College Bowl by a wider margin than they beat Park. Kent State had 35 points. The Lucerne Rose Tea this afternoon was nice.

Saw Earth's Moon and Jupiter's Moons with Seth - Saturday, February 13, 1965

I had a very nice time with Seth tonight. We went to the 9:00 movie, "Damn the Defiant", about an 18th century English battleship. Then we went up to the observatory which is one of Seth's main interests, for some good "moon shots" and a look at Jupiter and four of its moons. He was developing pictures all afternoon till 6:30 this evening that they had taken of the moon. I tutored Jeri from 9:30 - 11:00 again. This afternoon I went down to the gym and played some volleyball until the LLCs won by a forfeit, then went to the library.

MDCP Men Called Wives in Idaho and North Carolina - Friday, February 12, 1965

Mr. Gibson wanted us to see the movie, "The Servant", for Family class. Two of the MDCP (Military Degree Completion Program) men said they could take some in tonight. Richard Danner and I went. Three New York guys had gone to a Jewish synagogue, so we went to East 69th Street to get them. The military men stopped to make phone calls to their wives - one in Idaho and one in North Carolina. It was quite an evening. The show was pretty good - a British movie. Seth seemed so nice today when I was with him at lunch and afterwards until time to go to my 2:00 class.

Spoke About WJC Chairman's Duties in Assembly - Thursday, February 11, 1965

The student government students had this morning's assembly to kick off the campaign for next year's offices. I spoke about the duties of and qualifications for the Women's Judicial Council chairmanship. The LLCs had a meeting tonight. They showed the Park College movie, but it was out of focus most of the time and we nearly went bug-eyed. My Valentine care package came today - nice, as always. Holly and I got along better today. I think it just depends on the mood she's in. We have been having awful weather - I can't wait for spring.

Mr. Chronister Wants a Copy of Music Paper - Wednesday, February 10, 1965

We had a party for Jean's birthday tonight. Some of the girls had gone to one for Al Orr, so there weren't too many here. Dee had a call from her mother about 1:00 today to go home because something was wrong. That doesn't sound good. I finished my paper at 1:30, after making one minor change. I had stopped working on it last night at 12:00. I just had to finish typing it. It is one word over the one-inch-from-the-bottom-line of the last page requirement. Mr. Chronister wants to keep a copy of my music paper for his files. Seth says there's a movie in KC he'd like to see and that he'll treat me to dinner, too. He's so hard to keep up with.

Am Typing a Social Psychology Paper for Mr. Wetherill - Tuesday, February 9, 1965

I'm to the point where I have approximately half of my social psychology paper to put into one-third of the finished paper. Mr. Wetherill has strict requirements for the length of the paper - at least five and no more than six elite type pages. I've borrowed Liz's typewriter since hers has elite type and mine has pica type. I saw Seth just briefly at noon again, and then he ate supper with me. He walked me back and then asked me to the show for this weekend. I got a B+ on my developmental psych test. I spent my work time this afternoon working on the freshman seminar grades and grade point averages.

Talked Briefly with College Bowl Team Members - Monday, February 8, 1965

I have seen all of the College Bowl team except Pete and talked briefly to Seth and Terry. Seth said he still had about 24 hours of sleep to catch up on. Terry said that Portland State had been prepared for a year as a standby team and went on last week after Lawrence became a five-time winner. Seeing the guys and Mr. Wetherill again seemed so strange after seeing them such a short time before on national TV from New York. It's hard to believe that it is all over so quickly after keeping February 7 in mind for so long. The education seminar had quite a time analyzing the social studies test I made.
