Got Stanford Tests and an Iowa Test for Our Program - Friday, May 28, 1965

I've been getting some good natured teasing about my being "addicted to Park College." Bonnie said I should tell people when they ask why I'm here, "They revoked my diploma." I just came up from Mom Hunt's apartment where Marv and Al made cinnamon toast for a group of us. This morning I went out to Chinn and Mr. Ultican gave me a supply of Stanford tests. Then I stopped past the junior high to get and Iowa test from Mrs. Gatton for our seventh grade student. After lunch Kathy went with me to take last year's Stephens composite in to DeCloud's studio for repairs. Someone drew pencil marks on thirteen photos and tore two from the composite.

Will Get Books and Tests From R-5 to Use in Our Program - Thursday, May 27, 1965

Things ended up working out very well for me today. The Board of Education in Kansas City couldn't give us any books or tests. I finally got a hold of several "roses among the thorns" in the R-5 district, and I think Mr. Ultican at Chinn will be able to give us what we need. Luckily I got to the Pattons' house (after trying twice before) when Dee was there, and that was the only time Mrs. Patton would let me go into her room. I got the things I took there in April. Dee is leaving for the weekend, so I really needed them! Dr. Pai is leaving everything mostly up to me in connection with our program. He will be in Iowa City Tuesday through Thursday. My road maps were still in the car so I used them to show him how to get there.

Dr. Pai Said He was Busy with ELI Work - Wednesday, May 26, 1965

I got here - with no bumped fenders this time - at 3:15. I went straight to Alumni and was greeted with Dr. Pai's "untimely" welcome: "Oh, is this Wednesday?...I'm busy with some ELI stuff right now....Come back tomorrow at 3:30 or 4:00." He probably thinks I live in the next county! Oh well, it's not really that bad (except for missing Virginia's commencement) and there are things I can do on my own lining things up tomorrow anyway. I got moved into Room 311 in Hawley and am half unpacked. It's a real "cozy" bunch here for the summer term. I spent the evening with Tex. I called Evelyn - she took us to the Dari Sweet and there I saw Dee. Then we went to Jim's apartment and visited.

Virginia was one of Top Seven Students at Class Night - Tuesday, May 25, 1965

Class night proved interesting for us as usual. Virginia received a number of nice awards and was one of the top seven students. She was thrilled that Ron was valedictorian - she's been hoping for a long time. Diana Reif was salutatorian. Beth Vodicka and Terry Mangold received the Danforth awards, making that award "seven out of ten" for West Chester. This morning I took the lawnmower to town for repairs. I was gone a half hour. I spent the day packing. So here I go off to Park once more!

CBS Sponsored a Viewer Participation Drivers Test - Monday, May 24, 1965

CBS sponsored an hour long National Drivers Test tonight showing actual driving situations with opportunity given for answering and scoring corresponding questions. My score, though above the predetermined average from four major cities, was still in the "fair" driver category. Probably the people who need to see a program such as this didn't. The last question about drinking was handled well psychologically. In town I got the instruction booklet for my radio - I can work it now. I got some Italian leather sandals at Penneys.

Virginia and Ann Looked Self-Assured at Baccalaureate - Sunday, May 23, 1965

Baccalaureate was tonight. We took Grandma and Grandpa. I won't be here for commencement Thursday evening. Virginia and Ann both looked so self-assured tonight. I sometimes deprive myself of a lot of enjoyment by being so self-conscious. Johnsons were here this afternoon. I take College Bowl shows almost to heart now - one team lost by five points today. That would really be awful. We are disgusted with Rev. Peters for mentioning in the church bulletin that some people were concerned with some after-prom behavior last week. No one knows what it could be and he won't say.

Picked Out a Clock-Radio as a Graduation Present - Saturday, May 22, 1965

I went in to town with Mom for a little while this morning. I got a few things I needed - including a new pink nightshirt, checked my bank balance and had Carol continue my Journal subscription for its last "three weeks and two days" that I still have coming to me. I picked out a light gray beige clock radio at Payne's for my graduation present. However, we've been having trouble getting the different buttons to work properly. I'll have to go back and get some directions. The girls wanted to get a hair dryer with Washington stamps so we picked that out. I helped vacuum and "talked school teaching" with Mom this afternoon.

Tonight We Went to the Honor Society Alumni Banquet - Friday, May 21, 1965

Ann went to the sophomore party while Phyllis, Virginia and I went to the honor society alumni banquet. Joyce Covan went along to the party. Mary Ann Miller was at the banquet. It was nice to see her again. There really weren't very many alumni there. It should be held in the late summer. I took a turn riding the bike out the back road - it seems to work pretty well for the dog's daily run. Mom brought me some of her school materials that will be helpful in our remedial reading program.

Dr. Pai Called About Organizing Reading Program - Thursday, May 20, 1965

Dr. Pai called me this morning. He wants me to go down early to get things set up for the reading program, so I told him I'd try to go down next Wednesday. Now I guess I really can consider myself the coordinator as well as the organizer. Sometimes I feel indispensable. Everyone seemed to like the skit that Phyllis and I organized for Grandma for the social circle. Phyllis spoke the part of a foreign student in Spanish, and a beer can completed my "delinquent" characterization. The others did well, too. Mrs. Mangold wants Phyllis to teach the junior high Bible School class since I won't be able to.

Made Sugar Chalk and Used it for Three Drawings - Wednesday, May 19, 1965

I tried making some "sugar chalk" today but the chalk I used didn't work very well. Nevertheless, I tried being artistic and did three chalk drawings - a symbolic one called Krap Egelloc, one based on the "volets and rusty cans" of the commencement speech, and a still life of the tall blue vase and plant. I looked through more magazines for pictures, and sent back my alumni association ballot and meal reservations for alumni weekend since I'll be there anyway - the days pass quickly.

Found a New York Publisher for Children's Literature Book - Tuesday, May 18, 1965

I borrowed Oneita's copy of the Writer's Handbook and found a publisher to send the book I did for children's lit to for an appraisal. It will be interesting to see what a New York publisher has to say. I wrote to Dr. Pai about what I thought was necessary to do concerning the reading program and wrote to Evelyn. We went out to Reif's for lunch. This afternoon and this evening I called seven people - and Phyl one - about the skit Grandma wants to do for their social circle.

Will be Coordinating Remedial Reading Program - Monday, May 17, 1965

Well, it looks as if the month of June has been cut out for me after all. Dee called me tonight - Dr. Pai told her to charge it to the education department - to see if I could go down to act as the remedial reading program coordinator since she doesn't think she'll have time. I guess they have eleven students for it now. This makes us about back where we started from. I was just thinking today I wonder what I'd be doing if I was getting ready for the program - I don't think I will do much ahead of time. I sunbathed and looked through magazines for third grade pictures. This evening I helped Mom plant petunias and ageratums.
