About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Tried Writing to Mr. Larson About My D - Saturday, June 9, 1962

I wish I hadn't gotten that D in music. It bothers me. I tried writing a letter to Mr. Larson. I guess it would be alright to write and ask him what I did wrong so I won't get any more D's. I wrote to Marge and told her we could get her a week from Monday on our way back from Cleveland. I mowed grass this afternoon. We saw what we think was a small tornado cloud west of West Chester. Denise has a cute little raccoon.

We Had Bible School Programs and Exhibits - Friday, June 8, 1962

I'm glad the Bible School week is over. This year they decided to have individual class programs and exhibits on Friday night rather than the combined one at the school on Sunday night. It was so much nicer, and this way they stayed in their own classes Friday afternoon. We went out to pick more strawberries tonight.

A D in Music Made Me Cry - Thursday, June 7, 1962

I went to Jerolyn's shower at the Grace Hill community building tonight. It was nice and she got a good selection of gifts. I got my grades today and I had to cry because I got a D in music. I don't think I deserved it. I attended many of the recitals and concerts and wrote reports for extra credit. My other grades were French and world lit, B, phys ed and anatomy, C. Daddy liked his birthday presents.

Picking and Freezing Strawberries - Wednesday, June 6, 1962

We went to town for a little while after Bible School. I got some new white heels (hope they're not too high), socks for Daddy for his birthday and a set of eight blue drinking glasses for Jerolyn's shower tomorrow night. Here at home they were doing strawberries all day and we went back out to Grandma's to pick some more at chore time.

First Graders Can't Take Their Time - Tuesday, June 5, 1962

We went to the drive-in tonight. Their usual double feature ("Tammy, Tell Me True" and "Wake Me When It's Over") proved to be quite lengthy. I gave the lesson this afternoon in Bible School. They made their hand puppets. Those kids just can't take their time, but they are cute. When they couldn't think of "Abraham and Lot" one of them came up with "Abraham and Lincoln."

Daddy Helped with Iowa Primary Election Day - Monday, June 4, 1962

One day of Bible School down and four to go. I'm helping Marion with the first graders at the Methodist Church. Tonight I wrote to Mrs. Cowan and my "Little Sister," Faye Borgia from Bay Village, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. I'll have to call her when we go to Cleveland. Today was election day - Iowa Primary. Daddy was helping with it most of the day.

Will Help with Gifts at Jerolyn's Wedding - Sunday, June 3, 1962

Cuddebacks were up this afternoon for Marion to give me some things for Bible School. I made a wooden spoon puppet and two diorama backgrounds and read my lesson for Tuesday afternoon. Yesterday Jerolyn called and wanted me to help with the gifts at her wedding June 30th. It was a cold rainy day today. I'm out of energy. Hope I have some enthusiasm for the coming week. It couldn't be that being a janitor was too hard on me after a year of rigorous college life?!?
