**nightly entries written by a coming-of-age girl who became a woman from Washington County Iowa**

- ~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.
Opened Jerolyn's Gifts at Her Wedding - Saturday, June 30, 1962
Jerolyn's wedding was this afternoon at the Christian Church in Keota. It was real nice. I helped with the gifts along with three of her friends from Commercial College. She got about five white bedspreads and three toasters but aside from that a pretty nice variety. Linda Timmins went along with me. I have a bruise on my left arm which is so dumb of me - from shooting the bow and arrows yesterday.
Phyllis was a Young Republican Delegate - Friday, June 29, 1962
Betty, Carmen, Phyllis and I went to the Washington-Mid-Prairie baseball game at Kalona tonight. Betty drove. We lost 13-1 and forfeited before the game was over. Betty and Phyllis went to the Republican County Convention as Young Republican delegates from West Chester and now they get to go to the state convention on July 20th. I baled one load of hay (haven't done that in ages) and Virginia the rest while Phyllis was in town this morning.
Grandma and Grandpa are Home from Ames - Thursday, June 28, 1962
Phyllis didn't feel well today so she didn't drive the baler. Grandma and Grandpa got home from their Synod meeting in Ames. This afternoon I went across the road with Mom to visit Smiths and Norma. I keep passing these days away doing nothing, and I don't believe I even think. I hope I'm alright!
Developed a Film with Kodak Printing Kit - Wednesday, June 27, 1962
I developed a roll of film tonight with my Kodak printing kit so I wouldn't have to have the "nude" picture [a dorm resident] took in the dorm developed by a film company. It's a good thing I decided to do it on my own. I'd always wanted to try developing a film. I couldn't get any prints of the good pictures to work though. I've got to hurry and get the bed cleared off. Poor Phyllis is about dead from hay baling.
A Parkville Lady was on "The Price is Right" - Tuesday, June 26, 1962
Ann got me up this morning to see a lady from Parkville on "The Price is Right." They should have ladies from Parkville on television more often - I might get up sooner. More hay baling this afternoon. I guess we girls must be entertaining to the two Bobs. I wrote to Carolyn Brown to tell her I need a new "Little Sister" since Faye's not coming to Park.
May Submit Article About Canoe Trip - Monday, June 25, 1962
Grandma and Grandpa are in Ames for four days for a Synod meeting. Bob Stout helped make hay this afternoon. I slept till 11:00. Tonight I wrote an article about our canoe trip. Becky Gibson entered last summer's sports event writing contest in The Way magazine and won $25.00 for her story about caving. I thought I could try it.
Marge Got on a Crowded Train - Sunday, June 24, 1962
Marge went home on the 3:48 train this afternoon. There sure were a lot of people waiting for the train and on the train, too. I guess it might have been because some of the airlines are on strike. It would be a nice traveling day. I'm going to bed - here's hoping I can attack the remainder of the summer with gusto.
