About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Mostly Pleased With Midterm Grades - Saturday, March 2, 1963

I got a wee start on my term paper, but so futile compared to my intentions. Oh well, such is life. I wrote home to apologize when I sent this week's Stylus. We got midterm grades in every subject this semester in the 1 and 2 level classes. I'm very pleased for the most part with: French, ed psych, elementary phys ed and swimming, B; history, C+, and religion and poli sci, C. When they don't give D slips, I don't get one! Hope I can raise a few of the grades. I'm determined. It's time to take William Danforth up on a few of his dares! I went down to Parkville and got Virginia some stationery for her birthday.

Sorry We Wrote Home About Camping Trip - Friday, March 1, 1963

I never should have written home about that camping trip. What will they think! I guess I'll write home tomorrow and apologize. Margie and I got to thinking tonight just how stupid we were. I got up at 5:00 and read history, came back at 10:00 and got my political science definitions finished just in time for class, read French till time for class, and after French studied ed psych until time for the test at 4:30. Oh dear, I've written on the February 29th page and this isn't a leap year but March 1st. It seems like just yesterday when we had our sunny Groundhog Day and summer-like first days of February. I'm going to bed at 9:00 tonight so I should get an earlier start than usual tomorrow. I've got to get to my religion term paper and French outside reading started.

"Child Who Read Too Loud" in Ed Psych - Thursday, February 28, 1963

Oh, murgatory! If there were only 48 hours in every day! I have 30 pages of history to read and my own plus four given definitions of politics to write, not to mention that I haven't finished the French play we're supposed to have done by tomorrow and have 20 pages of ed psych to read before the test tomorrow at 4:30. One thing is certain, I'll either live or die. Ed psych tonight. Nancy Taylor led it and had us form groups to act out defects in children. I was "the child that read too loud." We had a swimming practical. She would have given me an A on my crawl but I didn't breathe (B+), C- on backstroke, incomplete on elementary back - which I haven't learned yet.

Typed Six Stencils and Weekly Letter Home - Wednesday, February 27, 1963

Well, I have about run out of the evening typing stencils (six) for Jan for her political science report and writing a letter home. We finally got our religion tests back. I got a 78. I thought I had done better than that. On the poli sci test I got a B but I only got a C midterm course grade (rats!). At least I won't have any D slips this time, thank heavens! But this time the freshmen and sophomores get midterm grades in every course. I need to get to bed. I have a long, hard 24 hours ahead of me (as usual!). We had our LLC picture taken tonight. Only four Lowells showed up.

A Camping Trip in Colorado - Tuesday, February 26, 1963

We just had a house meeting about our house party a week from Saturday night. It was nice of Mom to send me $6.00 (my allowance) today. Now I won't have to write home for money. If I go to both Lawrence and the work camp I'll need it. Nancy Ayres has the proposition of her, Margie, Judy and me and her brother and three of his friends going on a camping trip in Colorado in August. It's a question of the rest of our parents' consent. It would be a ball. I read history and started poli sci in the library tonight. We're having readings in that for the rest of the term. We had a riot playing "Number Relay" in phys ed. The pool at 90 degrees (bath tub) temperature was too warm to swim in longer than five minutes.

Reading the Play "Orphee" - Monday, February 25, 1963

The poli sci test wasn't too bad but I probably should have done better. There were sure a lot of tests today. I got what little news there was to get. In French we have been reading the play Orphee that we are going to go see at the University of Kansas next Monday night. I finally got the part in Cocteau: Scandal and Parade read that we were supposed to, so now the play reading will be much easier. I'm slipping in my old 7:30 breakfast Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It's getting to be more like 7:40. But we never have very long lines any more like we sometimes used to. They've been working on remodeling the library all year. For what it's worth to whom it may concern, you know! Gosh, how odd my conglomeration is tonight!!

A Quaker Service in Apartment Basement - Sunday, February 24, 1963

I decided to sleep this afternoon, first time I've done that in ages. Because I did I was just waking up at 4:45 rather than already gone to Commons at 4:30 when Karen Haenisch called up to say to come downstairs because she had a surprise for me. Carolyn Frobig (Armstrong) was here so I got to see her for a few minutes before she and her husband left. They live by Sioux City.  He goes to Westmar College. The Quaker service that  25 of us went to was a lot like I thought it might be - in the basement of an apartment house. Three people were moved to speak in an hour.
