About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Mother-Daughter Tea and Program - Thursday, May 2, 1963

The mother-daughter tea was tonight. The program was real cute. I was in charge of the properties and also ended up substituting for Sharon Hough. I read Oneita Fisher's "Mothers" from Kitchen Klatter magazine for the response to mothers. I helped with the Quill and Scroll initiation this morning. It went off really well and we had fun, too. I went shopping in Lewis's before going back to the Wellman Elementary School to wait for Mom to get through with art classes. I got some belt backing, white purse that just matches my heels, gold knit shirt, and $6.00 girdle for half price. I visited with Judy Johnson this morning in the elementary school office.

Court Day for High School Seniors - Wednesday, May 1, 1963

We had practice for the mother-daughter tea tonight. I have to read the "response to mothers" after dinner, but I don't have a part in the program itself. I started sewing my dress this afternoon. Margie got a C in history again, A- in physical education in elementaty schools, C in German and lit, and a D in religion. This was Court Day for the Washington County high school seniors in Washington. Phyllis and Linda Timmins were on the jury.

Phone Call About Park From Near Keota - Tuesday, April 30, 1963

I went with Phyllis after school to the Hawkette Relays. High school girls track is quite the thing. They really take it seriously. Mid-Prairie came in third, but they've been doing even better at some of their meets. This afternoon the phone rang and when I answered the man who was calling asked, "Do you have a daughter that goes to Park College?" I answered, "This is she." It so happens that there is a Park College graduate only about seven miles from here. He is Boyd Blattner who lives on the County Line Road over by Keota, has a boy ready to start college in two years, hasn't heard much about Park lately, wants to talk with me about it. I ironed today.

Quill and Scroll Initiation Practice - Monday, April 29, 1963

I went with Phyllis and the two Linda's to the school tonight to practice for Quill and Scroll initiation that Mrs. Fordyce wants me to help with. I also proofread for the school paper. I cut out one of my dresses today and played the piano. I didn't do much else - I almost feel guilty. I can see that I'll have to have some kind of job - to keep me occupied - then I'll get more done here in less time. I haven't heard from the Journal office yet.

"What Park College Means to Me" - Sunday, April 28, 1963

Today in church I gave my talk on what Mr. Peters had entitled "What Park College Means to Me." Dean also had me read the scripture and present a story for Sunday School closing exercises. They liked my talk I guess, but I didn't think I had done that good a job with it. This afternoon I wrote to Mrs. Cowan and sent her some flower seeds and thanked her for the ones she sent me. I must get a letter to Margie and send her a check for the $18 she left in her piggy bank.

Soccer in the Side Yard - Saturday, April 27, 1963

I didn't get much done again today. I finally got my talk about Park College that Mr. Peters wants me to give tomorrow written up. Mom said I could read it, so I haven't thought much more about it. We have been washing at home recently [rather than  at the Laundromat]. The girls and I played soccer in the side yard tonight. This is an excellent croquet and game yard [at our "new for us" house in West Chester].

Journal Job Pays $50 a Week - Friday, April 26, 1963

I went back in to the Journal office again this morning but Mr. Morris hadn't been able to find out if Barb Glassburner wants to work again this summer. He was telling me some more about the job - it pays $50.00 a week. I went on a shopping spree - black flats, brown shorts and print material for another dress. My grades came today - B's in everything except a C in history. I finished mowing the grass. They got out of school at 2:30 because of the small group and solo music contest at the high school. We girls went mushroom hunting in Bady's timber, but no luck. We went down to the old bridge by Parcells, too.
