About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Saturday Night Woes - Saturday, September 28, 1963

I don't believe that I should feel sorry for myself. But I so easily could. I want Nancy to be happy - after all, she lost her mother and yet has managed to take it like a saint. So it is okay if she walked down to the river with George after the show. After all, last night on the hay ride I probably had more "fun" than Nancy who was sitting up front with Flo and Dr. Johnson. It is okay if Evelyn goes up to the projection room and I walk to the J.R. and back to the dorm alone. And Judy Cox (who broke her engagement to Dick...) was going to the second show alone. I was so glad to see Mary Jane McComas with Fred. I spent most of the day on yearbook work. Karen, Terry and I went to a yearbook workshop at North Kansas City High School for a while this afternoon.

Fun on a Hay Ride - Friday, September 27, 1963

Our LLC party at the Carey's and the hay ride ride were real nice. We had a good turnout, just enough to really fill up the hay rack. Lawrence from maintenance drove us out the river road for an hour's ride and back. Rog had his head in my lap the whole time, and on the way back I had George's tickling to contend with, so I had a ball. Margie was nice enough to take my place at the health center. The test in personality wasn't too bad, except for two questions I knew nothing about. Physiological psychology - quiz again today - at least Wednesday's I got some "very goods" along with my "3" points! And I live in Stephens (3 points, 2 points - how awful!!).

Women's Judicial Council - Thursday, September 26, 1963

Evelyn and I (the "peoples") and Nancy (the Nebraskan) have been running around taking pictures and calling the kitty Herr House gave to Stephens. We can't find Cat tonight. Last night some of my funds were confiscated for the purchase of tuna for him. We've got the hay ride all lined up. The LLCs won a speedball game when the OACs had to forfeit. According to tonight's Stylus, I'm a newly appointed member of the Women's Judicial Council. Well, I must do well on my personality test tomorrow. It wasn't announced till yesterday when Dean Gibson didn't show up for class.

Dr. Johnson's Help with Hay Ride - Wednesday, September 25, 1963

Dr. Johnson is so nice. I was still trying to get a hold of a hay rack or a truck when I called him at noon to see if he remembered who it was that we borrowed the truck from last fall for the float. He offered to take me there tonight - but as it was we stopped at another place when Nancy and I went with him at 7:00. Mr. Miller was very helpful - we stopped to see another man who will give us his trailer if he can get it back from some Boy Scouts. Meanwhile Dr. Johnson is going to check with men at the feed store and post office before his first hour class tomorrow! I hate physiological psychology quizzes - - -.

A Watch is Not Ruined - Tuesday, September 24, 1963

Yesterday's dissertation was apparently unnecessary. My watch started running this morning and has been ever since. Mom sent the shoes I left at home, the Christmas cards I ordered this summer and some sesame chips. I got a letter, too, and my $10.00 allowance. Time sheets are due on the 25th this year, so that should last me till pay day. Nancy and I talked to George Fincke in the J.R. from 9:30 to 11:00. Half of that time he and I were shooting a gum wrapper back and forth. Nancy and I have managed to spend quite a bit of time in the J.R. this year. Dr. Gochman's resignation was two columns in the Des Moines Register (Associated Press).

A Watch is Ruined - Monday, September 23, 1963

I ruined my nice little Timex watch falling into the river. I had it in my pocket and Gabe's waterproof one in the other pocket since they were getting splashed. I took it down to the jewelry this morning. She reminded me that Timex watches have to be sent directly to the company. However, Timex doesn't guarantee watches that have been in water - so I'll probably be ahead in the long run just to get a new one. Gabe, bless his heart, came through with flying colors. I haven't gotten to talk to Flo about the accident. Everyone, of course, has heard..."Oh, you're one of those whose canoe turned over..." I must read psychological statistics.

Capsized in the Missouri River - Sunday, September 22, 1963

Flo, Gabriel and I took a bath in the Missouri this afternoon on the last leg of our canoe trip. We're not sure how it happened, but suddenly over we went. I was sitting in the middle, so was "under" the crossbar and went down, had to come out from under and surface, whereas Flo and Gabe fell free. I'm glad it's always drilled into people's heads, "If your boat ever capsizes, stay with the boat, " as we instinctively did just that. We managed to pull the canoe and swim one-handed and were almost to shore when Nancy, Chris and Bev caught up to us in their canoe. Then Chris and Mr. Layman helped us bail out water, and we completed the trip, having come in sight of the campus by the time we drifted to shore. That is the gist of the story I'll always remember as one of the more interesting of my life. The rest of the canoe trip was fun.
