About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Gave WJC Chairman Campaign Speech - Thursday, March 12, 1964

This algebra. I've been working on it for I don't know how long and still have a few problems I'm not sure about. I've had quite a few comments on my campaign speech that I gave this morning in assembly, so I guess it was okay. I was the first to speak but that way I had it over with. It really wasn't bad at all - after all, these people are my friends. Shirley, Nancy and Kathy gave a shower for Jane in the lounge this afternoon. There weren't any classes because of pre-registration day. Some of us went to Mrs. Morrill's for Women's Forum tonight. Two League of Women Voters members were there.

Went to Kansas City and Saw "Tom Jones" - Wednesday, March 11, 1964

Some of the LLCs went to Kansas City tonight to see "Tom Jones," the movie that has ten Academy Awards nominations. We had enough going to take three cars. I went in the one driven by Paula Hansmier's brother. The paper said it started at 7:30 but it must have started at 7:00. This I found out from Shirley and Ted after we got back and they figured out we had missed a fourth of it. It was ridiculous that we didn't stay to see what we had missed. I must need my sleep. Mrs. Steelman and I worked on our area of our group project this afternoon. I made a poster for the ICC dance ticket sale and started numbering programs with a gadget from the library.

Finished Campaign Speech, Made Posters - Tuesday, March 10, 1964

I've got a headache from writing, typing and going strong. I wrote out my platform this afternoon and had it "approved" by Pat, Karon and Karen. I typed it tonight so George could have a copy for the Stylus. I also made two campaign posters. Someone already tore the notepad from the one that said "It's noteworthy ....." I thought I had done horribly on this morning's algebra quiz, but tonight at the algebra review session I found out that my 17 was one of the two second highest papers. I'm glad I went. Now I feel more confident toward Gary as the new student grader.

Wrote Campaign Speech During Lecture - Monday, March 9, 1964

I'm tired of doing algebra so I'm going to get my seven hours from 11:00 to 6:00. Evelyn and I both got up at 4:30. I finished my paper, did a little algebra, and started my maps, which I finished from 10:00-11:00. I was able to do algebra during class since it was a question period. Evelyn and I went to a political science lecture that Dr. Neighbor suggested we attend tonight. I spent most of the time writing my campaign speech. Poor Fred's going to think I'm trying to "avoid him." Our half hour tonight was pretty profitable, however. I'm suddenly trying to see this whole thing from a different perspective.

Will Have to Get Up at 4:00 - Sunday, March 8, 1964

It's one of those nights again. Since I don't have my government done, my algebra or geography maps finished, I guess I'll have to get up at 4:00. Since Evelyn wants to use the text, I guess she'll stay up tonight and do hers. Ridiculous, after a whole weekend! This just hasn't been my day. I've been thinking about the boys at Tarkio whose frame dorm burned early Saturday morning. I'll be anxious to hear details from Phyllis. I "got yelled at" for letting some grease burn in a pan I was going to pop corn in - I said I thought I'd give Tarkio a little competition. I didn't see much of Fred today.

LLC Scavenger Hunt and Square Dance - Saturday, March 7, 1964

The LLC scavenger hunt and square dance were a lot of fun but exhausting. Fred is so hard to get along with at times. I think he likes to be the "star," and he likes to be contrary, too. Several times when things got goofed up during the square dance he would have the circle almost mad. He didn't come till 10:00 because he went to a youth banquet in Platte City to give a talk on Hawaii. I had lunch at Gattons and then we went to the Antioch shopping center. I got a navy rayon and silk jumper and polka-dot blouse for Easter. There was a news bulletin this afternoon that one of the boys' dorms at Tarkio burned.

Slow Dancing, Fast Dancing With Fred - Friday, March 6, 1964

I went to a party at Copley tonight. I sure like dancing with Fred. I was even game for one fast dance in which he worked up a sweat. I've got to learn how better. I worked tonight, too. I didn't quite finish the algebra test, although some other kids didn't either. It was kind of hard to think of things to write for the government test. At midterm I have C's in government and algebra and S's in everything else. The Board of Student Publications and Narva staff met this afternoon at 4:00 but I only had to stay 15 minutes. I've decided to run for WJC Chairman so I'm getting signatures on my petition.
