**nightly entries written by a coming-of-age girl who became a woman from Washington County Iowa**
About the diary writer

- ~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.
Saw Map Made From Construction Paper Pieces - Tuesday, May 19, 1964
Tonight Phyllis and I went to Y-Whizzers. Just ladies went on time to go on the scavenger hunt, so Karen Pohren went with us. In spite of a good try, we came in last. I've been in the last group in the last three scavenger hunts I've been on. After the meeting Ben Davis took Phyllis and me and Skip Robinson to the A&W for something to eat. I looked at some of the materials Mrs. Zager gave me, but these May days are getting away from me in spite of myself. I stopped past the school to look at the big Indian area mural map Mrs. Zager's third graders made from construction paper pieces.
Worked All Day Again For Mrs. Luckenbill - Monday, May 18, 1964
Phyllis and I went in to the show, "Man's Favorite Sport," tonight. It was good. I thought I'd die laughing when Rock Hudson fell out of the boat in an inflatable life suit. I worked all day again for Mrs. Luckenbill. I had a busy morning. The news route was fairly eventful, too, with quite a few "locals." Mrs. Cowan sent me three packages of seeds. I didn't get any more Stephens ballots back. It's a good way to check their individual efficiencies (unless they're on vacation or something) as to how fast they "return immediately."
Saw TV Show About Vinton School For the Blind - Sunday, May 17, 1964
Phyllis, Ann and I went out to the backyard in bathing suits this afternoon to suntan. I got some on my back. I worked a little on the yearbook, getting all set "to go." I hope Karen sends me what I need soon. I watched a TV show from 5:30 to 6:00, "Challenge of the Shadows," about the Vinton School for the Blind. I had done an article about the program for the Journal. I went bike riding on the back road out to the highway and back, and then Virginia and I went. I played basketball with Virginia and Ann. I almost feel as if I have to keep "busy" to keep from "daydreaming" which isn't too good.
Mr. Edwards Saw My Letter to Mr. Norrington - Saturday, May 16, 1964
Virginia went to the prom tonight with Marlin Greiner from Keota (a double date arranged by his cousin, Mary Ann Miller). They doubled with Diana Reif and another cousin, Roger Greiner. It's about time someone left this house on a date. This afternoon I helped do things such as burn trash, take down storm windows and wash the other windows on the outside, take down clothes, and mow grass. About time I made myself useful. I got the letter from Mr. Edwards that Kathy mentioned in her letter. It was very nice. He said he liked my attitude and agreed with Mr. Norrington's reply (having seen my letter to him).
Kathy Wrote a Letter in Favor of Park - Friday, May 16, 1964
I worked all day today since Mrs. Luckenbill went to Indianapolis. The morning started out slowly, but then the Thursday club news began coming in and I had plenty to do. Terry sent the ballot back, and I got letters back from Nancy and Kathy Rickard. Kathy said Mr. Edwards had dictated a letter to her that she sent to me (except that I haven't received it yet - it must have been with regard to the one I sent Mr. Norrington). Anyway, Kathy said everything she could in favor of Park, thinking I must really be disillusioned. Mom and Dad went to the Lion's Club dinner at Keota, and Virginia is helping decorate for the prom. They just got home. Mom said, "What do I smell?" I nearly could have set the house on fire frying hamburgers. After I ran water into the skillet, I set it on the kitchen floor. We sandpapered the skillet ring I made on the floor.
About Ready to Support Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. - Thursday, May 14, 1964
I helped Mom plant tomatoes and cabbages out at Grandma's tonight. Phyllis rode Duke. She thinks she is pretty bored (especially without a job) in this "booming metropolis." I find that it's sometimes hard to find a whole lot to write about on these routine days. I don't know why I have to fill the page, or think I do. I think I'll count how many times I started a diary page with "I" and see whether or not I'm "conceited." I finished my copy about the dorms. I've almost decided I'm going to hope Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. gets the Republican nomination. People are wondering what this world is coming to.
A Reply From Board of Trustees President - Wednesday, May 13, 1964
I received a letter from Elmer Norrington, the president of the Board of Trustees at Park, in response to my May 2 letter to him. I replied that I was in agreement with him that the best thing we as students can do is to encourage good students to enter Park. I sent along a copy of the Stylus in which my Women's Judicial Council chairman platform said the same thing. I finally got around to writing some Narva copy about the dormitories. I just have to be in the right mood for something like that. I hope I can get in the spirit now for the rest of it and finish it. There was an insurance representative here most of the evening. Mom had to go to a meeting in Wellman.
