**nightly entries written by a coming-of-age girl who became a woman from Washington County Iowa**
About the diary writer

- ~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.
Looked at a Car for Student Teaching - Tuesday, June 2, 1964
Mom, Dad, Ann and I went up to Keota tonight to look at a car (1961) for sale at Gretter's Chevrolet. It is the one Learys had. It's a pretty brown color and very nice. It seems I will need a car when I start student teaching. Skip called me at the Journal office and asked me if I wasn't busy tonight, did I want to go to the ball game at Brighton. I told him I had to work on the yearbook. Nic Walker is working at the Journal now. He's in journalism at SUI. Marilyn used to give me the inside line on him. I finally heard from Karen - the Park College mailroom didn't get my letter to her.
Voted in Iowa's Primary Election - Monday, June 1, 1964
I voted in Iowa's primary election. It has not been a very exciting election since both Hughes and Hultman are unopposed for governor and there is no U.S. Senate election. I feel so "responsible" in voting - it will be even more so November 3, of course. Mom, Ann and I went out to Grandma's to water the tomatoes and cabbages and hoe the garden a little tonight. I'm about to go nuts over the mail I'm not receiving - I hope I get it all at once! I must get back to the yearbook. I just wonder how much Karen has left to do. I wrote to Mr. Edwards.
Went to a Verdi Literary Society Reunion - Sunday, May 31, 1964
As if in answer to Phyllis's boredom and my secret goal to go out with someone at least once a month, Ben Leeper (I thought it was Davis until I introduced him wrong to Mom) and Skip Robinson came past tonight and asked Phyllis and me to go to Washington with them. I was riding my bike at the time. Skip is a graduate of Parsons (but eight years ago). We saw the show, Captain Newman, M.D. This afternoon Mom, Phyllis and I had an interesting time hearing Karl Libe and other old timers reminisce about the Verdi Literary Society meetings they used to have at Memorial Miller School south of Washington. Oneita Fisher organized a reunion of it at the same school.
Spillville, Iowa was Dvorak's Inspiration for the New World Symphony
I did not feel like doing much today - therefore, I didn't. I don't know why I should feel depressed - female biological composition, I guess. I mowed Virginia's and Mom's parts of the grass tonight for lack of anything else I felt like doing. This afternoon I read some of the Iowa history book Don Brown wrote for Iowa students, Iowa, the Land Across the River. I didn't know Antonin Dvorak got his inspiration for the New World Symphony at Spillville, Iowa. I "participated" in the flag raising ceremony on my way to the Journal office this morning since just after I walked past the post office, the three men carrying the flag marched forward behind me and the ceremony had begun.
Took Two to Honor Society Alumni Banquet - Friday, May 29, 1964
I took Linda Pence and Diana to the honor society alumni banquet at the Kalonial Townhouse tonight. Only nine alumni were there, but it was a nice evening. Phyllis wanted to go in to the United Presbyterian Home tonight since the president of Tarkio was there showing slides. She had Jim take her in. He stopped here for Phyllis's birthday cake and icecream. He's really a nice boy - too bad he has to be our cousin! I gave Phyllis a little yellow stop sign charm for her birthday - I guess it has the sentimental value of the time she ran a red light in Kansas City. Virginia and Ann are at the youth fellowship overnight camp at Forest Lake.
Commencement Exercises Tonight Were Nice - Thursday, May 28, 1964
The commencement exercises tonight were nice with the exception of several crying babies and a wolf whistle when one of the graduates went on stage - her little brother, I guess. I saw Helen Birkey and met her fiance. I also talked with Gene Stromley, Judy Johnson, Jim Orr, Tom Bauer, Marge and Mary Lou Slemmons (don't know their married names). I was rather upset after I received Nancy's letter that said the Narva was $1,400 in the hole (because not enough ads were sold by those who said they would sell them). Money is coming from the Student Activities Committee fund, thus no summer activities, or as good as "none." She also told me not to worry about Park College or the bedspreads. Then Mom told me not to worry about the Narva - so I worry - yes - huh?
Will Need More Copy Sheets for the Narva - Wednesday, May 27, 1964
I'm still plugging away on the Narva. I am about out of copy sheets, and I see Walsworth won't accept copy on anything but them. I wrote to them for more. First of all, I had to go to the library, and sure enough, Washington High School's Hi-Life was published by Walsworth. After calling Cherie Anderson, one of the editors, I guess they used a different process. It was a nice try, anyway. I really should write to Mr. Edwards and Kathy Rickard about Park College. I wish the rest of the Stephens girls would get their ballots back.
