**nightly entries written by a coming-of-age girl who became a woman from Washington County Iowa**
About the diary writer

- ~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.
After Returning Home, Found Picture in Journal - Tuesday, June 16, 1964
I finally finished writing the letters to my advisees. The Y-Mixers were having a picnic and miniature golfing tonight, but Phyllis and I decided not to go. I had my picture in the Journal tonight - at the soda table in the style show. The funny thing about it is that I didn't know it till I got home. It was the last picture on an entire page of celebration pictures. I was interrupted just before I looked at the last picture, then never noticed it before I turned the page. It's a lot of fun having Nic Walker around at the Journal office.
Am Typing Letters to Five Freshman Girls - Monday, June 15, 1964
We went out to Grandma's tonight to treat Duke's feet, pick peas, and I looked for a Des Moines paper that had a cute article about a fourth grade class, but I wasn't able to find it. The letter I am writing to five Park freshman girls is taking quite a while to make five copies of, even if it is only two pages long. I've still got to conclude it. I didn't realize I wrote such long letters till I started recopying this one. It doesn't seem possible that I've been out of school for almost two months. I've hardly gotten a thing done. I'm going to feel pretty dumb if I have to stay up all night in the end to finish my part of the yearbook. I do wish Karen would get the pictures here.
An All-Faiths Vespers Service Was Held Tonight - Sunday, June 14, 1964
Tonight we went to an all-faiths vespers service that was the climax of the Anniversary Week. They had it at the Methodist Church because of the rain. The retired Baptist minister, Dr. Yard, gave a very good sermon. Mr. Rich led the vespers singing. This afternoon I started writing to the five freshmen that will be my advisees. Sharon Hough came in this afternoon to show Phyllis the new Tarkio catalog. Sharon is going to go to Tarkio in the fall.
A Good 125th Anniversary Celebration - Saturday, June 13, 1964
Washington has really had a good 125th anniversary celebration. They deserve a telegram of congratulations. We saw the "Washington Way" historical pageant tonight. It was very good - local talent but professionally directed. Marilyn Friese made a good queen of the celebration. The winning candidates were determined by the number of tickets they sold to the pageant. The six we bought from Marilyn no doubt helped. Dick Anderson, the one with whom I had the "part" in the style show, was the grand champion beard grower. This whole event has been just as fun as a Park College Harvest Festival. I received a $150 per term grant-in-aid from the college for next year.
Modeled Great Great Grandmother's Wedding Dress - Friday, June 12, 1964
I modeled Great Great Grandmother Pearsall's wedding dress in Washington's 125th Anniversary style show this afternoon. It was really cute. Oneita Fisher wrote the script. I was 35th of a few more than 40 to go on the stage, and I stayed "on stage" till the end at a table in the "ice cream parlor" - so fun, then posing for pictures, including a colored one for Charlie. Everyone really liked the dress and little black parasol that Mom recently remade. I went back to work for an hour.
Saw "The Making of the President - 1960" - Thursday, June 11, 1964
We just finished watching the television program, "The Making of the President - 1960." It was a nice review, and a lot of the things that happened, I had forgotten about. It's almost sad the way prejudices change after something has happened to someone. The big parade in town was this afternoon. Ann was in the Mid-Prairie band, and Phyllis helped with the Republican booth. Ann had Lee Miller here today. Virginia has a summer babysitting job at the Millers, so we took him along to town. Mom's club breakfast was here this morning. I went to get June. I also went to get Phillipine but couldn't persuade her to come.
Saw "Tom Jones," Rode Ferris Wheel - Wednesday, June 10, 1964
We went in to see "Tom Jones" tonight. I'm still not sure I have that movie completely straight, but at least I saw all of it this time. We went to the carnival for half an hour afterwards. Mom and Dad looked at the window displays while we girls rode the Ferris wheel and walked around the carnival. There weren't too many people around tonight - most must have been at the pageant. I wrote to Bev Reece to acknowledge her decision not to live in Stephens after all. I still haven't received enough ballots to know if _____ has a majority vote.
