Feel Much, Much Better About "Stephens Problems" - Monday, November 2, 1964

On this election eve I feel much, much better about "Stephens problems" and I hope everyone in the dorm does for having talked them over. Most do, I know. Evelyn and I may have "lost" if the whole thing were analyzed in terms of a debate, but at least some things were brought out in the open. It doesn't seem possible that it was four years ago tonight that Eisenhower spoke to the nation urging everyone to vote for Nixon. We started beating our third grade tom-tom rhythms.

Stephens Open House Was Very Successful - Sunday, November 1, 1964

Stephens open house was very successful (too successful?). I don't know about some of these girls up here. The law is going to be laid down at a house meeting (required) tomorrow night. We ran out of refreshments and kept having to get more 76 for the punch. Leslie is going to love us when we start turning in all the various bills. It took us all afternoon and evening to get things ready (it always does, of course), but it really did look nice. I guess I'll try to get things done from 6:00 on and go to bed now.

My plans for going to bed early were changed when Jean asked me if I wanted to go to Fritz's with her and Bob, Tom Strauss, Dave Portzer, and Rita Fox. We had a lot of fun and then came back to the campus Halloween movie and party. I took Evelyn, Jean and Winnie to DeClouds at 1:00 for our Stephens pictures. Barb and Margaret went in with us. Then we went to Antioch to pick up the sheet cake for our open house.

Concerned About This Year's Stephens Spirit - Friday, October 30, 1964

It's too bad, but the Stephens spirit is very forced compared to what it was a year ago. I don't know if it's the fault of me as the president, the place where we're living, the people in the dorm, or what. Honestly, it makes me nervous, darn it! The atmosphere at the Halloween party Nickel gave us tonight was pretty stilted. The kids had a lot of fun at the school Halloween party. I thought their little nerves would burst during one of the relays the room mothers had. I talked to Dave Kennedy, who goes to Parsons this year, at the Nickel party. I got an A on my philosophy paper.

Two of Our Names Have Been Mentioned - Thursday, October 29, 1964

Our first of four nightly events is over - Hawley gave a fun Halloween party for Stephens and Herr House. The Stephens girls sang some "Peanuts" Halloween songs. I was going to get up at 6:00, but my alarm didn't go off, so at 6:45 I got up and madly dashed off a worksheet and reading plans for the top group which was the only one I took today. I observed in Dixie's room again. Dr. Pai asked me if Mr. Fincher had spoken to me about a job and said that he had mentioned Mrs. Steelman's and my names to the superintendent as two he was recommending.

The Indian Unit Test Results are Quite Good - Wednesday, October 28, 1964

The third graders did so well with their tom-toms that I was amazed. They are ready to finish putting the designs on them on Friday. The Indian unit test results are quite good, I think. Three missed none; half missed six or less; Connie must not have understood it, as she missed 28 of 31; Sherry only missed two; and David just five. Miracles never cease. Mr. Fike discussed teacher applications and certifications at the SNEA meeting - very worthwhile.

Dr. Pai Came to Observe This Morning - Tuesday, October 27, 1964

I have finished the last of (more than) my share of open house invitations. We had our seminar this afternoon after Dr. Pai observed Evelyn and me this morning. He didn't have much to say one way or another. Tonight I cut pieces of paper for our tom-toms. Kids at school and girls here keep asking me when we're going to make them. I am letting philosophy slide, but I don't want to get up early. I'll try to read frantically slide from 8:00-9:00.
