- ~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.
Spoke About WJC Chairman's Duties in Assembly - Thursday, February 11, 1965
The student government students had this morning's assembly to kick off the campaign for next year's offices. I spoke about the duties of and qualifications for the Women's Judicial Council chairmanship. The LLCs had a meeting tonight. They showed the Park College movie, but it was out of focus most of the time and we nearly went bug-eyed. My Valentine care package came today - nice, as always. Holly and I got along better today. I think it just depends on the mood she's in. We have been having awful weather - I can't wait for spring.
Mr. Chronister Wants a Copy of Music Paper - Wednesday, February 10, 1965
We had a party for Jean's birthday tonight. Some of the girls had gone to one for Al Orr, so there weren't too many here. Dee had a call from her mother about 1:00 today to go home because something was wrong. That doesn't sound good. I finished my paper at 1:30, after making one minor change. I had stopped working on it last night at 12:00. I just had to finish typing it. It is one word over the one-inch-from-the-bottom-line of the last page requirement. Mr. Chronister wants to keep a copy of my music paper for his files. Seth says there's a movie in KC he'd like to see and that he'll treat me to dinner, too. He's so hard to keep up with.
Am Typing a Social Psychology Paper for Mr. Wetherill - Tuesday, February 9, 1965
I'm to the point where I have approximately half of my social psychology paper to put into one-third of the finished paper. Mr. Wetherill has strict requirements for the length of the paper - at least five and no more than six elite type pages. I've borrowed Liz's typewriter since hers has elite type and mine has pica type. I saw Seth just briefly at noon again, and then he ate supper with me. He walked me back and then asked me to the show for this weekend. I got a B+ on my developmental psych test. I spent my work time this afternoon working on the freshman seminar grades and grade point averages.
Talked Briefly with College Bowl Team Members - Monday, February 8, 1965
I have seen all of the College Bowl team except Pete and talked briefly to Seth and Terry. Seth said he still had about 24 hours of sleep to catch up on. Terry said that Portland State had been prepared for a year as a standby team and went on last week after Lawrence became a five-time winner. Seeing the guys and Mr. Wetherill again seemed so strange after seeing them such a short time before on national TV from New York. It's hard to believe that it is all over so quickly after keeping February 7 in mind for so long. The education seminar had quite a time analyzing the social studies test I made.
We Are Proud of Park's College Bowl Team Despite Loss - Sunday, February 7, 1965
It's hard to believe that Park's participation in College Bowl is over. It was neat sitting in the Meetin' House and watching, even if Park didn't get any points until the end when Terry and Walt made 25 for us. The guys looked so composed even in spite of such a loss, and we are proud of them. Portland State was just too stiff for us. They should be flying back now. A group of kids plans to meet their plane at 2:00 AM. I think I was in the snake dance scene in the movie shown at intermission. I managed to finish my social studies test and philosophy paper, but my social psych paper will have to wait till Wednesday.
SUDC Carnival Tonight was a Lot of Fun - Saturday, February 6, 1965
Has this been a day and night, and a lot of fun, too. I worked this afternoon on the Stephens "telegram" booth for the Student Union Development Committee Carnival, and this evening helped with it and the SNEA bingo booth, and was an LLC sheriff. This afternoon Evelyn and I went to Parkville to buy prizes for the SNEA bingo booth. Four of the Stephens girls - Liz, Terry, Chris and Linda - baked the Stephens cakes today, and with a $5 bill in one as a "come on," they brought about $40. I met with Jeri Pitcher for remedial arithmetic this morning from 9:30-11:00.
Park's College Bowl Team Left with a Police Escort - Friday, February 5, 1965
This has been quite a day - "unreal" in ways. It was fun to see the College Bowl team gathering for their departure with a caravan of twelve cars plus a police escort. I guess they made quite a spectacle at the airport with their signs and singing "Hail, Hail Park College"! Park finally got around to publishing the Dean's List. [On a three point scale] my 2.846 average was second in the senior class (Vivien had another 3.000). It really is rather neat! It was kind of funny today when Kay and I were discussing the Nickel auction sign ("Life CAN Be Just!!") and turned around to find Dean Miller standing behind us.
