Our Bridal Shower for Evelyn and Dee was Very Nice - Sunday, June 6, 1965

The shower Bonnie and I gave for Evelyn and Dee was very nice. We had a very nice group there although a few (and most of them were on-campus girls) weren't able to make it. We managed to all but completely surprise them by having them wait in Dr. Pai's office "to talk about the remedial reading program." For entertainment we had them do "drama bag" skits. I laughed so hard my stomach hurt! Our refreshment table was about the nicest I've seen around this college in a long time. I went to the 8:30 service at the Parkville Presbyterian Church this morning.

Shopped and Made Preparations for Bridal Shower - Saturday, June 5, 1965

Bonnie and I went to Antioch this afternoon to shop for Evelyn and Dee's shower. We got them each a group gift of an immersible Sunbeam electric fryer. We also bought pink topped petits fours at the bakery and ingredients for pink punch. Then we stopped at the ice cream shop (really a nice one) and decided to order pink grapefruit sherbet party scoops. We stopped past the education department to wrap the gifts and begin washing dishes. Linda went back with me this evening to finish up - I just remembered I'd better go check on the spoons we have soaking in the sink to try to shine them. Terry Seelye stopped past tonight.

Oakwood Manor School and Principal, Mr. Fuller are Nice - Friday, June 4, 1965

Bonnie and I went to the Cinerama production of "The Greatest Story Ever Told." It was very good. After driving through downtown Kansas City in a real deluge, I think I could drive anywhere. I got my school placement today, so this afternoon Bonnie, Kathy and I drove out to Oakwood Manor. I like the principal, Mr. Fuller. He told me something about each of my 21 students. He helped design the building - lots of glass and very nice looking. I'm so thrilled - it's close to Antioch Shopping Center. This morning I went back to Chinn for books for remedial reading and took Bonnie along.

Astronaut White Walked in Space for Twenty Minutes - Thursday, June 3, 1965

The liftoff of the Gemini this morning for a four-day (62 orbital) space flight was beautiful. It's always interesting to watch the group that gathers in front of the J.R. TV. Astronaut White "walked in space" over the United States for twenty minutes this afternoon. The other man aboard is McDivitt. I grouped the remedial reading students and called OCMs (my abbreviation for overly concerned mothers) to tell them what days their children should come. I sunbathed this afternoon. Joel Dempsey wants to major in elementary education. He cleans Hawley and was in my room talking about remedial reading this afternoon. I talked with Terry Estes on Mackay steps about Park College tonight and later Dave Elwess came along.

Felt Exhausted After Spending Afternoon Scoring Tests - Wednesday, June 2, 1965

The kids came back smiling today, so that much appears hopeful! Kathy called this morning to say she wouldn't be able to make it after all, but then the people I was going to have her test didn't make it either, so it turned out okay. I spent the afternoon scoring tests. I really felt exhausted afterward. I think teaching will take more energy than studying (going to school) did. It was interesting to note the various results. I called several tonight for the surprise double shower Bonnie and I are giving Sunday for Evelyn and Dee. It was nice talking to people again.

Ten of Eleven Students who Came to Our Program are Boys - Tuesday, June 1, 1965

We had eleven students show up this morning for our reading program - ten are boys. This afternoon I gave a test to a first grader whose mother didn't get him here this morning because she hadn't read our letter right. Dee didn't make it back from St. Louis in time so I had to handle both a first grader and a group of fourth or third grade level boys. This afternoon I talked with another woman on the phone about her two kids. Kathy Webb called and offered to help. I'll be glad to have her in addition to Bonnie's and Kathy's generous help. Kathy and I went to the North Kansas City Library to get a book for one of our seventh graders. I drove the wrong way on a "One Way" street! We went to the cookout at the Careys tonight.

Spent Time Getting Ready for Start of the Reading Program - Monday, May 31, 1965

This morning Evelyn and I got up at 9:00 and she left a little while later. I set my hair for two hours and it turned out almost in a flip - Virginia would have loved it. I read some more testing instructions. This afternoon I went down to the education department and moved around some tables, dusted, made signs directing people to the reading program, and washed an accumulation of coffee cups. I took Kathy up to Carey's, and then we went to the root beer stand. I took Bonnie there tonight. We're in the process of planning a surprise double bridal shower for Evelyn and Dee.

Helped with Faculty-Student Picnic at Hamiltons - Sunday, May 30, 1965

This morning I went to the Episcopal church north of here with Tex Smith and Miss Vulliamy. I had wanted to visit an Episcopal church and was glad for the opportunity. This particular congregation is about as informal as our own in West Chester, and they have a minister who reads his sermon. This afternoon I sunbathed on Hawley lawn. Then at 3:30 I drove to Commons to pick up the food for the faculty-student picnic at the Hamiltons. Linda, Bonnie, Kathy and I went early to help. Playing croquet was fun. Tonight Mom Hunt drove Marv, Al, Bonnie, Kathy and me to the Plaza to window shop and get ice cream and hamburgers. Evelyn was home for the day but is back tonight.
