**nightly entries written by a coming-of-age girl who became a woman from Washington County Iowa**

- ~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.
Have Found a Furnished House to Share Next Year - Tuesday, June 22, 1965
I think I'm all set up for a place to live next year and it should be a really nice arrangement. The young teachers renting a furnished home that the North Kansas City School District secretary referred me to in NKC are really nice. All majored in education. Eileen Painter teaches business courses and Barbara Thomas works at an accounting office. Ronilue and Priscella will be getting married and going to grad school respectively, so they'll need two more of us to help share their $60-a-month-each rent. I spent the afternoon hunting for North Charlotte - it's great to have found such a "pot of gold" at 816 East 23rd Avenue. Tex helped me make word cards tonight. I "made a buck" taking Larry McDowell to Kansas City, Kansas to get his car. I let him drive mine over.
Sat on Mackay Steps to Enjoy the Longest Day of the Year - Monday, June 21, 1965
I sat and talked with Tex tonight on Mackay steps in order to enjoy the longest day of the year. I can hear my mother saying those words, "the longest day of the year." This afternoon I checked the Highland apartments (none were furnished), went to Antioch to try on a dress I had in mind but bought nothing, and stopped at the administrative center (after having a strawberry sundae and asking directions at a Howard Johnson's). I checked about my Missouri teacher's certificate, got a physician's blank, and the secretary gave me a couple of leads for places to live.
Met New Vicar and His Family at Church Tex Attends - Sunday, June 20, 1965
I'm enjoying some of the fun other people enjoy as freshmen. I was typing the first part of a paper for Joel Dempsey tonight and he came up to the floor to give me the rest of it. He took his time about it and we had a nice talk about his interest in writing. This evening Tex took me to a picnic at his church honoring their new vicar and his family. This morning Tex and I went to the Presbyterian church near the school where I'll teach third grade.
Went to "Elvis Presley - Roustabout" and to the Plaza III - Saturday, June 19, 1965
It's 1:00 and Insuk's sleeping so I set my hair in the dark, set my clock radio (turning off Moon River though I would have liked to listen to it) and came into an empty room to write. Linda Cleveland went with Tex and me to the campus show, "Elvis Presley - Roustabout," and was going to go with us to the Plaza III but changed her mind. We went though and had a nice evening. This afternoon I took Insuk and Yoko shopping at Antioch - they about "bought out" the center. Tex helped me wash my car over at Dearing this morning.
Saw From Russia with Love at Hillcrest Drive-In - Friday, June 18, 1965
Tex and I went to the Hillcrest drive-in out past Gladstone tonight. We thought we would see two James Bond movies, but they showed some other thing first, so we only stayed for From Russia with Love. We stopped at Waid's on the way back. Tex is a nice conversationalist. This morning when I got to the top floor of Alumni I found furniture from the whole education department piled in the lounge where my group has remedial reading and more in the kitchen where Dee's group meets. I can't see how it could take that long to get things back in place after cleaning.
Singing Brings Memories of Social Clubs Serenading - Thursday, June 17, 1965
This afternoon from 1:00 till 2:00 I visited with Carolyn Frobig Armstrong, her little girl, and girlfriend from Denver who saw my name on the room list when they stopped past the dorm. They live in Bethel Kansas. Then I wrapped Bonnie's Avon order to mail to her. I treated Insuk and Yoko at Hauber's after we mailed it. This evening I typed a paper for Joel. I helped Mom Hunt by buttering cinnamon toast for the hungry crowd at 10:00. There's a Presbyterian youth conference here this week. The girls' singing is coming over so clearly from Herr House. It brings back fond memories of social club serenades. The remedial reading kids dramatized their story today for Dee's group - more fun!
Looked Down from Window, Saw Boys Looking Up - Wednesday, June 16, 1965
Today I just did "little" things around here. I sunbathed, wrapped a copy of the book about Park College, College Pioneering, and mailed it to Daddy for Father's Day, called the Avon lady, and her daughter brought in Rita's, Bonnie's and my products over, and typed a three page letter home. It was so funny this morning when I stuck my head out through the restroom window (open about a foot) and looked down, only to see three boys looking looking up! I turned around only to see in the mirror the best example of embarrassment on my own face I've ever had occasion to see.
Car Had Flat Tire which Tex Changed and Said to Replace - Tuesday, June 15, 1965
This morning when I went out to get in my car, the left front tire was flatter than a pancake. It had been low for quite a while. Tex changed it for me and at lunch persuaded me that it wasn't worth fixing. So we went to NKC and bought a new one for $13.30 at a Goodyear tire sale. I checked over the phone about a few more apartments, but all three had been rented. The library's slowness in getting the Dispatch out adds to the difficulty. I persuaded Insuk, Ruth and Yoko to go to the J.R. tonight. Insuk needs to get away from her studying more.
