About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Church is Called Off - Sunday, February 21, 1960

The snow that started yesterday afternoon has turned into enough to keep us home from school tomorrow. Hip hooray, here's hoping I can get plenty of studying done and a good excuse not to get the school paper out next Monday. I love these vacations (now)! We didn't have church today.

To District in Basketball - Saturday, February 20, 1960

We went down to Ainsworth to the girls' sectional finals and saw Richland beat us 43-42, and we could have won had either Shirley or Marge made their shots. Thank heavens, the runner-up goes to the district, too, this year. I had studying to do all day, but I just couldn't concentrate.

District Declam Contest Results - Friday, February 19, 1960

I got a II at the district declam contest today in Wilton Junction. I go one step further each year. Will I get to the State contest next year? But I'm satisfied enough with my two II's and a I. Whew, what a day. Phyllis Crone, Mary Lou Lampe, Lillian Hole and I went with Mrs. Kephart, who seemed very nice to me (and us) all day. We brought Shirley Bush (a future classmate) back to Wellman. Jane Mayer is a National Merit Scholarship finalist.

Three Speech Additions Forgotten - Thursday, February 18, 1960

Tonight we went to choir. Betty and Mary were the only ones there besides us three. I only hope they go through with the contest tomorrow; I haven't got a bit of tomorrow's homework done. When I gave my speech once more in class I "forgot" all three additions that I wrote yesterday. But it was my first time to say them. We had an FHA meeting and an entertainment committee meeting.

Family Night Entertainment - Wednesday, February 17, 1960

Tonight was family night at the church. Dirk and Laura Mae truly surprised me with some very good entertainment - something we haven't had for quite awhile. I made some changes in my speech for Friday (at Mrs.Kephart's suggestion). Now I need to retype it and do my geometry.

West Chester Wins Last Games - Tuesday, February 16, 1960

Well, we just saw the Trojans win the last scheduled basketball games West Chester will ever have. We beat Brighton 58-45. The reserves also won, 42-24. Oh joy! In history we had a movie about Ataturk. The home ec girls went to town this afternoon for a clothing clinic by a New York City fashion advisor for Advance Patterns. (Phyllis went.) I have finished my column.

Reading Mom's Diaries - Monday, February 15, 1960

I've been reading Mom's diaries again. Hers are so interesting. I don't think mine will be. Anyway, I love diaries. Mrs. Kephart says I'll really have to be good Saturday for the district declam contest - there are 1000 contestants. I'm finally getting another column written, and so early this week. They gave us a list of what we can take next year. I think I might take Seminar in American Government, English, Spanish I, and chemistry.
