About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Park House is Now a College Museum - Sunday, January 7, 1962

Well, back to chapel going after three Sundays of church at home. I wore my snow boots and carried my heels - several others were doing that, too. After chapel I went with Nancy Taylor to the Park House. It's been fixed up as a Park College museum and they usually have coffee and cookies there after church on Sundays. I was the first person to sign the guest book for 1962. This afternoon I went to the "winter" chamber orchestra concert with Kathy Gillespie. We were really having a riot up here last night - and making so much noise - and Mom Hawkins even said it was alright!

Looking at the Cultures We Made in Biology Lab - Saturday, January 6, 1962

I slept till 10:00 this morning and then got up and we cleaned our room. This afternoon some of us went over to the science hall to look at our cultures. Mine still doesn't have many animal specimens in it. Vin Pronger - the old pro - says I have too much earth in mine and to "let it go a couple hours yet." Some of the kids have gotten some real good specimens. Then I went to the library for the rest of the afternoon. It seems like we've had a lot of half riots today. Oh, the studying ahead of me - four tests next week, I think. Must get to my "thoughts" book.

A Deep and Drifting Snow Since Morning - Friday, January 5, 1962

Brother, what weather now! It began snowing this morning and it's really deep now. It's drifting a lot, too. It doesn't seem like I got a whole lot done today. I washed two weeks' accumulation of laundry and even got my ironing done. Judy Xelowski (can't begin to spell her name!) and I went to the library for a little while tonight. Tonight I've had a discussion with Marge and then went to Nancy's room for a gab session. Maybe later I'll feel more settled down about what Marge and I were talking about. Right now I'm tired.

The Beauty of Those Chimes - Thursday, January 4, 1962

This has been one of my favorite college days - we've been having such spring-like weather and I still marvel at the beauty of those chimes sounding against the hills. I went up to the fourth floor john to take a look at the river from there - Theresa called me up - they have a wonderful view. I turned in my work application blank for twelve hours. I also talked to Mr. Carey about my schedule and education courses. I guess I'll take the anatomy and physiology lab since astronomy doesn't count as a lab science. I should have taken music rather than art this semester so I could take poly. sci. intro at the time intro to music meets. Anthropology's an education "elective" so I may not take it this semester.

Hearing the Chimes for the First Time - Wednesday, January 3, 1962

I made good use of the library today. This morning I went over to ask about a job - there aren't any library vacancies at present but I did get a work application blank. Now to decide how many hours I think I can work. We didn't have French class. Dr. Hampl was sick with a virus infection after driving all the way back from South Dakota. It's good to have Merry Lee back again. I can feel work, work, work ahead of me. Gosh, what a left margin! I'm spoiling the looks of Diary '62. I've got to start writing in my "thoughts" book. I sent a post card home. I love the chimes - if every 15 minutes isn't too often.

Benjamin Fairless Died Yesterday - Tuesday, January 2, 1962

Here I am at Park a fast and interesting 24 hours later. Pat, Delbert, Jeff and I drove practically "non-stop" all the way from Grandma's house to Hawley. We left at 7:00 and got here at 12:30. I was the fifth one to check in at Hawley. We had just arrived in my room (the hall looked deathly still) when I heard the chimes. They hadn't been working in the first three months we'd been here. It was so nice to hear them - now it is college. This morning on the car radio we heard that Bejamin Fairless died yesterday. That beats all - but I guess I'll have to give my speech in memory of him.

Packed and Ready to Go Back to Park - Monday, January 1, 1962

I'm packed and ready to go back to Park. It has seemed like a fast vacation. They have to go back to school tomorrow, too. We went down to Parcells for New Year's dinner. My watching the Rose Bowl parade and game was skimpy this year what with getting up just in time to get ready to go to Parcells and taking a last turn at doing chores almost as soon as we got home. If you'd call taking notes on Benjamin Fairless's book "completing" my "planned vacation" homework, it was really down to the wire because it was the last thing I did tonight! Well, here's hoping for a successful 1962.
