About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Halloween Activities at Park - Wednesday, October 31, 1962

Halloween at Park this year began with a "picnic" breakfast in Commons. We had to eat from paper plates since there wasn't any steam for the dish washer. Tonight there was a horror movie in Alumni (a mystery - "The Bat") and then a "food" party in the Meetin' House. Margie and I helped celebrate here by putting up the black and orange crepe paper I found last spring in streamers in the hall. I got a B on my psych test (shoot, I would have liked another A - several kids got them this time). Oh, my religion test grade was terrible - 63. He had said this test wouldn't count in our midterm average, but it does. I cried a little.

LLC Girls Won Speedball Game By a Forfeit - Tuesday, October 30, 1962

We were supposed to have a speedball game with the OAC girls this afternoon but we won by a forfeit since they didn't have enough players there. We went ahead and scrimmaged for practice. Then we went over to watch the LLC boys play the ACC boys in softball. We were really going good for a while but then we lost. We had a lot of fun cheering the guys on. I caught up with Jim after assembly and we had a nice little talk on our way to the J.R. about pheasant hunting. It seems so nice not to have a test to study for or a float to be concerned about -- but I have so much to do even so ------.

"Intelligence, Education and Culture of Jesus" - Monday, October 29, 1962

It's good to be back in a studies-only routine. Now I must really work for the last half of the trimester. This afternoon I finally selected an article on learning for my psychology library project. I selected "Quizes' Contribution to Learning." I've taken notes on the article but still need to dream up my conclusions. Then I went to talk to Dr. Johnson about my religion paper topic. He said I'd selected a very interesting topic ("The Intelligence, Education and Culture of Jesus") and suggested some books for me to use. Now I must study some more for my French test.

Bonfire and "Swan Lake Ballet" Movie - Sunday, October 28, 1962

Oh, what an exhausting weekend. Margie and I went to church with Jay and Dale this morning. They had morning chapel services for once. Then we went to Waids in Riverside for dinner. Kids from campus go there all the time. I hadn't realized it was the place we ate breakfast the first morning I came to Park. The boys left at 1:00 to go back to Omaha. This afternoon I read history but I was too drowsy to get much out of it. The bonfire and box lunches on the lower soccer field with singing and then the movie of the "Swan Lake Ballet" were a nice climax to Harvest Festival.

A Double Date to the Dance - Saturday, October 27, 1962

The float didn't place. At first I was a little ashamed of it compared to the others but then I decided it stood a good chance for third place. The PCCs won with a very good float, "There's No Place Like Nome," OACs second, ACCs third. We also lost the soccer game to Tabor so I guess that means no national soccer tournament. Margie had invited Jay Pooley down from Omaha and he had his friend Dale H. (can never remember the last name - German) drive down in his white 1962 convertible. I went with him to the dance. After we left the dance we were going to go out for pizza with Judy and Wayne and Nancy and Bob but their car got lost, we got tired of following them, got lost ourselves, called Hawley to say we'd be later than our 2:00 hours, found out directions, but then got on the wrong road and were on our way to St. Joe before we finally found our way back at 2:30. About too much!!

Working on the LLC Float - Friday, October 26, 1962

(Written later). Let's see if I can remember everything that has taken place this weekend. What a weekend. Almost too much. I got up at 6:00 to study religion with Kathy. The test was pretty hard. At 10:30 (we didn't have psych or French class) Nancy Arvard and I began taking chicken wire up to the Johnsons and rounding up supplies. Then my life saver Bob Lastick began helping and good old Roger  was lending me moral support and now at 12:00 AM the LLC float somewhat resembles our theme of "Tokyo - Old and New." The movie industry mural needs to be redone, but all in all it's been fun working on it though we didn't get the truck till 3:00, etc.

Received Permission to Get Chicken Wire - Thursday, October 25, 1962

I didn't do anything about the float today except to get the chicken wire from the library. Some of the other clubs are already working on their floats. But I have a religion test to pass before I can work on ours. If I have to stay up all night I'll pass that test. Oh dear, I've regressed to my old ways of only average college work. But at least I still have a chance to save myself with only A's and B's rather than C's - maybe. Peggy Peck and Bruce Clark are the homecoming queen and king, attendants, Connie Voss and Mel Blades and Carol Bucher and Bob Young.
