Party to Raise Money for March of Dimes - Thursday, February 14, 1963

Tonight from 12:00 to 2:00 in the J. R. we had an all school party that just developed during the evening after some kids heard on the radio that a Kansas City disc jockey was organizing a hike for the March of Dimes and planned to go to the Parkville fire station. Copley got in touch with them and arranged for them to come to the college. We donated a "shoe box full" of money. I spent the evening with Jim and he asked me to "The Interns" tomorrow night! I have a religion test in the morning. Guess I won't get much sleep tonight if I get up at 6:00 to finish studying.

Journal Item About Being Queen - Wednesday, February 13, 1963

We had to have ed psych on Wednesday night this week. After all our preparation, they didn't get around to Carolyn and me since we still had last week's lesson to do. I could use more time to get mine ready anyway. I ate both breakfast and supper with Jim Trett (there are too many Jims). Both times it sort of just happened that way. I proof read this afternoon. Mom sent a nice write-up about my being queen that was on Friday's Journal front page. I guess they knew about it before I did! We had a history quiz. I got a B+ to C-.

A Chopin Concert by Wiktor Labunski - Tuesday, February 12, 1963

This noisy dorm makes me edgy! I wonder if I'll have enough patience to teach school? Wiktor Labunski from the University of Kansas City played a Chopin concert in Alumni tonight. I could have listened to him all night. He's famous all over America and Europe. I get to hear another famous musician Sunday night - Jim Trett asked me to the Stan Getz jazz and bossa nova concert. Carolyn was back tonight to go over psychology. It's so fun playing those games in physical education in elementary schools. Every dorm on campus was hit with some bug - most likely Commons food - last night and this morning. I was one of the "victims."

Bought Airmail and Five Cents Stamps - Monday, February 11, 1963

I spent most of the evening writing news. Carolyn Reed was here for a while. She and I are in charge of the ed psych class for Chapter 9 Wednesday night. We did our preliminary planning. I got a B on the ed psych test, one of the best grades. Even so, I got a lot of 0's. You'd think he could give a few points' credit for some of them. I made a trip to the post office after French class. The airmail stamps I got to mail Mrs. Cowan's valentine and the five cents stamps I bought were pretty. Mr. Hearson drove me back up from the stop sign.

Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox Services - Sunday, February 10, 1963

Margie and Bob went to Wichita today to visit his aunt. They aren't back yet. I hope they hurry along. Today some of us in Religion 202 witnessed a Roman Catholic and a Greek Orthodox church service in Kansas City. Several of us had never been to a Catholic service or a Greek service before. Both of the services and the churches were very impressive. The Greek Orthodox had a lot of chants, singing and speaking, in Greek. Altar boys and communion at both. Ritual, incense at the Greek, bell ringing and wine pouring at the Catholic. Margaret and I, Vivien and Charlie went with Rev. Seamans. A cute girl [from South Dakota] has been Jim Peeke's guest this weekend. I guess that's the way the ball bounces.

A Nice Talk with Bonnie - Saturday, February 9, 1963

Boy, I have caught myself a cold! I'm putting it to bed early tonight. After supper I had a nice talk with Bonnie. It did us both good. She got one less vote than I did for club queen and she said she was so happy for me, that she was really sort of glad she didn't get it because she didn't like dances that well. She said she thought in many ways we're a lot alike and I think she's right. Bonnie's eyes are really getting bad. She thinks she may have to learn Braille or get a reader. Carey said I got the most applause of anyone last night.

Chosen as Lowell-Lucerne Queen - Friday, February 8, 1963

This is really hard to believe. I was the Lowell-Lucerne Club queen! Dave Kennedy is our king. I'm sure I really know how to perform the role of a beauty queen! I received a tiara and a dozen long stemmed red roses. The others were - ACC, John Garrett and Karen Haenisch; OAC - John Ramirez and Karen Garner; PCC - Tom Gale and Peggy Peck; and LEC - Don Dancik and Kay Donnelly. Tom Darch and Kathy Gillespie announced their engagement. Jim Hunter and I went to the dance with them - all four of us in the back seat - so I thought that was a privilege. Jim Peeke announced Mary Anne Higginbotham and Mark Fisher's engagement. I had my hair fixed this afternoon in Parkville. Margie's boyfriend Bob is down from Chicago. Oh, what an evening! They once said McDowells weren't meant to be beauty queens.
