About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Attacked By a Cat - Tuesday, January 14, 1964

Time is getting away from me. I think I let Fred in on one of my weaknesses tonight - my inability to make up my mind over something trivial - like whether or not to go to breakfast in the morning (we're going). I was just about to the health center this afternoon when a yellow cat I stopped to pat attacked the back of my left leg and scratched it. Mrs. Flaherty thought it was bad enough to give me a tetanus shot. I hope the insurance forms she filled out cover the $3.00 first aid and $1.00 for the tetanus. That's an expensive cat scratch!

Fred Forgot His Lifesaving Class - Monday, January 13, 1964

I sure do like my classes again this trimester - too bad I got off to such a poor start last trimester. I wish I had time to stop and "count my blessings." I still can't keep up with time. Poor Fred forgot to go to his lifesaving class tonight at 7:00. He was up here till 7:30. He felt so "stupid" about it when he came back at 9:30 to eat the pizza Evelyn and I fixed. Evelyn ate Jim's share since he was at a firemen's meeting. I'm starting to type up some rules for a Narva cover contest. I've got to see Mrs. Dorsey about how much money to give as a prize - and also find out if she ever turned in a time sheet for me. She misplaced mine last month.

Was Told "I Love You" - Sunday, January 12, 1964

We woke up about 9:00 to eat Mrs. Eason's delicious pancakes and bacon. While Babs and I helped her with dishes, Fred, Rick and Mr. Eason shoveled out the driveway and then they drove us back to campus. We got here in time to change clothes for dinner and I reset my hair for 40 minutes. I took some good natured teasing about having eloped with Fred! He has a pretty new suit (tan coat and dark brown pants) that his mother got him for Christmas. Two things happened today that were pretty nice in meaning to me - Mrs. Eason asked Fred to return thanks at breakfast. He also told me, after dinner, that he loved me.

Snowbound Near Bethel, Kansas - Saturday, January 11, 1964

Fred wanted me to meet the Easons, the people with whom he and Karon stay during vacations, and see some movies they took when they were in Hawaii, so Mrs. Eason came and got us and Rick Campbell and Babs Ford about 3:30. But guess what - it has snowed so much that the Easons don't want to drive tonight, so we will have to spend the night here. To say the least, Babs and I are having a slight riot in Mrs. Eason's pajamas and confiscating bobby pins. Luckily Karon had some in her nice room here which we are using. They have a beautiful home in a rural area near Bethel, Kansas, across the river from Parkville. The movies were so neat - but the bulb burned out before we finished. We four "shoveled" snow and walked in it tonight. A light plane crashed into the Telephone Building at 5:45 and killed four people.

Student National Education Association - Friday, January 10, 1964

Classes went well for me today. Last trimester just never was my trimester. I'm not sure I really care for psychology courses as much as I thought I would. I think the individual professors' personalities have a lot to do with it. At any rate, I think I'm going to get more out of studying again. I was elected president of the Student National Education Association at a meeting this afternoon. It shouldn't entail a whole lot of work. I worked tonight so Fred and I decided not to go to the 9:00 movie, although we had thought about it. He colored a picture tonight in the Stephens coloring book. We've displayed some of the girls' pictures on the lounge wall.

First LLC Meeting - Thursday, January 9, 1964

Wayne and I presided over our first LLC meeting tonight. I guess it went all right. No, now that I think about it, I know it was a good meeting. The LLCs have really shaped up to be a leading club on campus. But it's up to Wayne and me to keep it that way. I worked algebra problems until Fred came over and helped me finish them. I baked some more cookies for him tonight. Nancy and I went to Parkville this afternoon. I haven't given Mrs. Busch so much business in years as I have this week. The newspaper episode sort of backfired when Nickel figured out what was up - and also threw water on the girls after they had finished their "project."

Cookies, Pizza and Date Nut Bars - Wednesday, January 8, 1964

Fred gave me a cute little stuffed skunk holding some flowers. We named it Flower. This afternoon Evelyn and I went down to Parkville and got some bake and serve cookies, pizza mix and date nut bar mix as evening snacks for Fred and Jim. I baked some of the cookies tonight. This dorm is up to tricks and good times again. Some of the girls - we can't all go - are going to go down to Nickel early in the morning and fill their porch with newspapers. We had an ICC meeting at 6:30 and at 10:30 a dorm meeting. I also worked algebra and am now going to bed at 11:40.
