About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

First Real Valentine's Day - Friday, February 14, 1964

Fred and I went to the movie, "Hud" tonight. I didn't like it, but Fred thought it was good for what it was portraying. He gave me a pretty valentine. I shouldn't be this way I guess, but I feel a little hurt that he didn't give me some little valentine gift. I don't know, I guess I'm getting pretty disappointed with him. He's pretty self-centered. I wonder if it's my tone of voice or what when people don't say anything in connection with something I've said. One thing ticked me off yesterday. I asked Fred, "Are you going to assembly?" In the next breath - I was waiting for his answer - he said, "Are you going to assembly?" I baked a valentine cake for Fred. I guess he liked it. Too bad I have to feel this way on my first real Valentine's Day, boyfriend-wise.

Shopping in North Kansas City - Thursday, February 13, 1964

I went on a shopping spree in North Kansas City this afternoon. I went in with Jane and Randy and came back on the bus. I got new heels put on my loafers, finally found a Valentine for Fred, got some socks, pants and hose, a Park College sweatshirt at Penneys, and a navy sweater and a black, blue, gray and white tweed wrap-around skirt. Dr. Dunham was at the health center on Thursday night again this week, so I went up to work. We had a fire drill in Mackay just as we got back from assembly.

"Blessed" by "Pope Seelye the Pious" - Wednesday, February 12, 1964

We had another party tonight - this was Babs's birthday. It really has seemed nice this week not having any meetings to go to. I haven't had to get up early as often. I hope I do better on tomorrow's algebra quiz than I did on yesterday's - only 10 out of 25 points. But she didn't give it to us until a quarter till and I ran out of time. Fred thinks I'm funny. Given the chance, he's quite the talker - all about missiles with Randy and Ted, for instance. I hope I wasn't being sacrilegious when I made a cross on my forehead with cigarette ashes and said, "What day is this?" I was "blessed" by "Pope Seelye the Pious."

Loads of Time Today - Tuesday, February 11, 1964

Even though I get rushed for time, there are still days like today when I feel as if I have loads of time. It was never this way last semester. I went down to watch the ACC-PCC basketball game tonight. Fred made 35 points with no trouble at all and consequently he says it was a lousy game. I demonstrated a little of my "skill" afterward. I guess Phyllis amazed practically the whole basketball team by doing that at Tarkio. Our Avon products came tonight. I got some new pinky dink pink polish and lipstick, powder refill, astringent and clear skin soap. I didn't have to work this afternoon.

A Baby Boy for Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds - Monday, February 10, 1964

I didn't do as well as I should have on the geography test, but then I don't think anyone else did either. It was too long, for one thing. Mr. Reynolds wasn't there. His wife had a baby boy today. We've been waiting for the last three weeks - they picked a good day - he didn't miss a class after all. We threw Terry and Rosemary in the shower tonight after Judy and Babs gave them an unbirthday party. Fred liked the soup I fixed for him tonight. I've got to study for the algebra quiz we're having in the morning.

Algebra to Do, Geography to Read - Sunday, February 9, 1964

What is done is done and cannot be undone - I slept till 9:30 this morning when I should have been up studying. I'm getting so exasperated over algebra - and I'm still reading for the geography test we have tomorrow. I only hope that on five hours' sleep I can work miracles from 5:00  to 7:00 tomorrow. Fred and I went to the library tonight. We had an ICC meeting in the J. R. at 3:00 this afternoon to act on letters of transfer. I'm not sure we really had enough there to make it official, but we acted on them anyway. Have I got work to do.

Student Union Building Auction - Saturday, February 8, 1964

Park College students launched their fund raising campaign for the new student union building tonight with a carnival and auction identical to the WUS (World University Service) one two years ago. As a sentimentalist, I recalled the LLC general store as we again used that for our booth (plus a "jail"). The canoe trip, as one of the most popular items, went for $75, etc. Fred was broke and he refused to go Dutch treat, so consequently, we bought nothing. I was in a pretty ouchy mood with him today. Some things he does really gripe me. I wish he hadn't worn his old faded blue jeans tonight. Or forgotten last night to give a message to Rog. Or not noticed for nearly five minutes that I had come in and sat down by him after I finished with the cotton candy machine. The breakfast Stephens sold went for $60. Someone bought Dr. Schurr's hat for $60.
