About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

The WJC Had Our First Case Tonight - Monday, March 23, 1964

Algebra again! Of course, if I'd stop extracurricular activities I might be able to get it done sooner. Tonight the WJC acted on the case of four girls who had taken books and periodicals from the library. This was only Karen's third case all year, on her last night in office. The new student council had our picture taken tonight for the Platte County Dispatch. They [Children's Literature class] seemed to like the talk I gave about Laura Ingalls Wilder and Garth Williams. I'm not sure how well I did on the teaching of arithmetic test. The ACCs beat us in volleyball.

Stephens Girls Had Dinner at the Wishbone - Sunday, March 22, 1964

The Stephens girls went to the Wishbone for a steak dinner tonight. Evelyn drove a car for Barb, Margaret, Judy and me. It was a good meal and a lot of fun. After we got back I went to the library to read a little more about Laura Ingalls Wilder and Garth Williams for my report tomorrow. Evelyn and I went to Fran's recital this afternoon. I was at Herr House till 2:00 for yearbook picture taking. I really miss Fred after having "gone with" him for four months, but it's got to be better this way. I just hope my moodiness doesn't effect my studying.

A Broken Leg in a Soccer Game - Saturday, March 21, 1964

Some of the LLCs went chocolate bar selling this morning. Wayne and I sold 40 between us in Parkville and in the neighborhood out by Evelyn's house. Diana, Peggy and Terry went in our car, too. Altogether the club has sold about 120 of 1200 bars. I was in the process of selling Stan Shedd one at the soccer game when 15 feet from us we heard a terrible pop and saw John Garrett in terrible pain. Stan was told to get his car so he quickly handed me a dollar and I shoved two candy bars into his hand. But he only wanted one, so Becky handed him 50 cents in change. John's leg was broken - almost the same spot on the field where Hal broke his three years ago. Nickel won the game. I saw "West Side Story" with Nancy.

First Orchid for a Last Date - Friday, March 20, 1964

I've just said "goodbye" to one of the nicest boys I've ever known. Fred and I had a wonderful time at the Inter-Club Council dance at Mirror Lake Country Club. But we don't plan to go with each other from now on. I'm afraid I'm going to miss him, but it will be better this way. Club royalty this year were Dee Morrow and Steve Shugart, ACC; Pam Wright and Archie Font, LEC; Flo and Wayne, LLC; Karen Garner (again) and Dick Peeke, OAC; and Nancy Rohlfing and Terry Brown, PCC. Bonnie and I and some of the freshmen went out to decorate for the "Emerald Isle" theme this afternoon. Fred gave me a beautiful orchid - my first.

Went with Fred to Hootenanny - Thursday, March 19, 1964

Fred took me to the hootenanny tonight. The Outsiders, who were here for Harvest Festival, performed. They had it in Hawley lounge because of the rain. We had a big talk about what we've been doing to antagonize each other. I pointed out that although a guy may resent a girl making him take her to the big dance and then dropping him, a girl likes to know where she stands (i.e., this business of not letting me know whether he's coming up for supper, or at 9:30, etc.) He's interested in making a "clean break." Well, fine, but let's at least be civil since we do plan to go to the dance. The third graders at Southeast School enjoyed the story I read to them. Carolyn drove out this afternoon. Beth, Jean and Rosemary also went.

Went with Rosemary to Madrigal Concert - Wednesday, March 18, 1964

I went with Rosemary to the madrigal concert tonight. The LLCs played the PCCs in volleyball. We won one of the three games. The LLCs got the candy bars that we're selling for the student union fund-raising campaign. I sold two to Mr. Penniston who came to help us pick out the Narva cover tonight. Fred did an interesting job of ignoring me tonight in Commons after I had been playing basketball with him and Don Hinkle before our LLC-PCC game. Don brought his hand down on my glasses and bent them. Fred's ignoring me doesn't really bother me if he thinks it does, yet it is rather unnecessary, I'd say.

Elected Women's Judicial Council Chairman - Tuesday, March 17, 1964

I was elected Women's Judicial Council chairman in the election today. Kathy Rickard was my opponent. Chuck Girrard got the Men's Judicial Council chairmanship over Hans Van Naerssen. Gary Sorrell got the majority of the votes for student council president over Terry Scullin. There will have to be a run-off between Liz Ralston and Jim Hunter for vice president. Dr. Robert Nunley from KU gave two geography lectures today, and I also went to his folk singing session tonight in the Meetin' House. I spent most of today's spare minutes doing yesterday's algebra assignment. Phyllis sent her firsthand account of Tarkio's fire.
