About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

A Reply From Board of Trustees President - Wednesday, May 13, 1964

I received a letter from Elmer Norrington, the president of the Board of Trustees at Park, in response to my May 2 letter to him. I replied that I was in agreement with him that the best thing we as students can do is to encourage good students to enter Park. I sent along a copy of the Stylus in which my Women's Judicial Council chairman platform said the same thing. I finally got around to writing some Narva copy about the dormitories. I just have to be in the right mood for something like that. I hope I can get in the spirit now for the rest of it and finish it. There was an insurance representative here most of the evening. Mom had to go to a meeting in Wellman.

We Saw Play About Peace Corps in the Philippines - Tuesday, May 12, 1964

Phyllis, Virginia, and I went to see the school play about the Peace Corps in the Philippines tonight. The ladies' group of the Y-Mixers wanted Phyl and me to go to their picnic this evening, but I told them we'd try to next time. It rained the whole time I was out getting news. It's a good thing it started before I left home or I probably wouldn't have taken my raincoat and Phyl's rain bonnet. Charlie wasn't there today or yesterday. I thought I was supposed to get about five weeks full time "when we go on vacations in the newsroom."

Worked on Park Matters This Morning - Monday, May 11, 1964

I addressed the 16 envelopes for mailing Stephens ballots and got them ready to mail. I wrote to Karen hoping to get some yearbook matters taken care of. I also sent the Dyer picture to Charlie Beach to ask him to identify everybody. I sure hope I get my share of the yearbook finished by June. It will be nice to have it over with. I got lots of local news items about Mother's Day dinners so worked late today. Daddy is helping Bob Stout by planting some of his corn. Bob is in the hospital after being run over by his tractor last week.

We Prepared Three Meals Today for Mom - Sunday, May 10, 1964

We girls got up and cooked French toast and bacon for breakfast and also got the other meals today so Mom wouldn't have to do anything on Mother's Day. This afternoon we went back to Cuddeback's woods to hunt mushrooms. Marion and Larry were there, and with Larry' help, we finally found some. Then we stopped at Cuddeback's, and later Parcells did. We had quite a time trying the pencil, needle and thread trick on Peggy and Marion. It worked, except Peggy is supposed to have one more boy. I typed up a ditto copy of the Stephens ballot. There are only three more eligible: Kay Donnelly, Nancy Avard, and Kathy Old. We went out to Grandma's tonight. Mom called Grandma Kay.

Evelyn Has an Engagement Ring - Saturday, May 9, 1964

Believe it or not, another coincidence - when I mentioned to Evelyn on May 7 that she had probably decided to write at the same time I was writing to her, she indeed had. She has an engagement ring. Evelyn is working at the Montgomery Ward credit department, as are Rosemary, Mary Sue, and Kathy Amayo. I stayed in town to shop for a little while after work. I got Mom some beads and earrings, and pajamas for Virginia and Ann to give to her, a basket purse, hose, and orange beads and earrings like Phyl's to go with my orange dress and jacket. We planted a garden out at Grandma's. We went mushroom hunting but still had no luck.

Visited West Chester's Third Grade Teacher - Friday, May 8, 1964

The wind is blowing, as it has been for some time. There have been tornados some place in Iowa for five straight days. Tonight we had the mother-daughter tea at our church. The program theme was "Grandmother's Album" with Grandma McDowell having the part of the grandmother. I read the 23rd Psalm. This morning I went over to the school and talked with Julie Zager, the third grade teacher. She gave me some of their books and a lot of things to look through for an Indian social studies unit in case I need it for student teaching. Just seeing her things has given me some good ideas - I'm ready to begin practice teaching right now.

Nancy Called With News About Park - Thursday, May 7, 1964

What a coincidence. Just this morning I decided to write to Nancy to tell her I was puzzled over what became of her bedspreads, and I also mentioned the phone call which I hadn't yet received. Then at 7:30 tonight a call came - it was Nancy wondering if her bedspreads were in storage. She also said President Morrill had resigned in January and Mr. Mohler is now Acting President. And Dean Hilbert left so Dr. Hamilton is taking his place. Today I got to thinking it might have been Karen calling last night about the yearbook. I got the things out this morning. I've got a June 1 deadline coming up.
