About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

We Are in Allison Park, Pennsylvania - Sunday, August 9, 1964

We left Grandma's at 9:00 this morning and got to Schwartzes at 11:30. They have a real nice house in an almost rural area north of Pittsburgh, a part of Allison Park. There are so many pretty wooded hills in this area of Pennsylvania. We drove around part of the area late this afternoon looking it over. Phyllis called Nancy Tuft, one of her friends from Tarkio. I thought she should call Don, whom she dated for a while, but she didn't think much of the idea. I can't think of a person from Park who lives in the Pittsburgh area.

Chilled to the Wind Off Lake Erie, Saw Skyline - Saturday, August 8, 1964

We got to Grandma Kay's at 3:30. I drove most of the way from the Ohio line to Cleveland. Daddy took over as soon as we got off the turnpike. I called Verna Thompson, and we had a nice phone conversation, but I guess we won't be able to see each other. She thinks she has German measles. We drove around tonight to see some old landmarks (including the school where Mom went from Kindergarten through third grade). We went down to Lake Erie and chilled to the wind off the lake and looked at the Cleveland skyline. I cut some weeds behind Grandma's garage for her. We girls walked over to the shopping center drugstore. I called Bob Barnes just for fun, but he's in Oklahoma for Bob Young's wedding.

We are in Illinois on Our Way to Cleveland - Friday, August 7, 1964

This finds us at the Stonecrest Motel in Momence, Illinois. It was like an oasis in the desert. After driving from 5:45 to 11:45, I was beginning to think we never would find a place to stay. We aren't too far from Chicago. It seems easier to get ready to leave at the end of the day than in the morning. I went about my work as usual today. It was quite a placid day. I pointed out a mistake to Charlie - he had called the judging teams demonstration teams - and we talked about that. I never did tell him I'd be gone a few days - I thought Dorothy could when she stays to take my place.

Mr. Everetts is Helpful with Local News Items - Thursday, August 6, 1964

Phyllis went to the horse show with the Timminses tonight. I felt too tired to go - I must not be too bad off if I still had energy enough to ride my bike, but I sure felt draggy this afternoon - fine time, just before going on vacation. Just so I'm not getting mono! I went on my regular news beat to the stores again. There seems to have been a lot of local news this week. Of course, Mr. Everetts is responsible for a lot of it, as he can rattle off a whole string of leads every time I see him. I washed the car this morning. Ann did the windows and Mom vacuumed it out.

A New Scrapbook for Junior Year Mementos - Wednesday, August 5, 1964

Mom and Dad went in to the fair tonight, but we girls weren't that much interested in going again tonight. They also went to visit Miss Margaret at the hospital. I finally got around to getting my junior year scrapbook made. I started a new one for my last two years. I spent my "local news" time at the fairgrounds. I spent 40 minutes talking to Ralph Melville, whom I interviewed last summer, about Goldwater. They know the Goldwaters and were invited to their ranch for an Easter sunrise service. I'm still dwelling on the subject of coincidence and ESP.

Washington County's Pretty Women, Eligible Men - Tuesday, August 4, 1964

We went in to the Miss Washington beauty pageant tonight. We took Bonnie and brought her and Linda home. We really thought Linda had it made when Cheryl Keating was second runner-up and Peggy Grimes was first runner-up, but Pam Loeffler won. I just had a feeling Nic would end up with Cheryl tonight - and sure enough. He went with her last summer. She took the very "opportune" time the day we all three had Cokes together to tell Nic she was no longer pinned to the guy she went with in college last year. C'est la vie! Dave Vanderbilt sure looked good in the Kiwanis stand tonight - "Thorty," he said, for the price of a milkshake.

Linda is in Miss Washington County Contest - Monday, August 3, 1964

I just tried a Seventeen magazine hair set - hope it's worth something. Linda Timmins was here tonight, excited herself, as we are, for her entering the Miss Washington County contest. We didn't tell her in order not to make her nervous, but the Ouija board said she'll win. Nic really got upset over the idea of college graduation being required for the president of the United States. Mom just thought a good question for his "Town Talk" column could be whether there should be stricter requirements for the presidency. It was all pretty funny, I thought.

A New Drink, a New Attitude and a New Belief - Sunday, August 2, 1964

Cuddebacks were here tonight so that took care of my almost but not quite mood to write to Evelyn. Oh well, I waited so long to hear from her that I thought she had disowned me for drinking cherry vodka, changing my mind about students from the east, and going out with someone who was once engaged! But I guess she's still claiming me. It was hot again today. Iowa was the hottest in the nation yesterday when it got to 103 at Council Bluffs. I sunburned my back out in the yard for three hours. Mom helped with Irene's wedding this afternoon. Phyllis went to the show with Ben.

Ranger 7 Sent Back Over 4000 Moon Photos - Saturday, August 1, 1964

Miss Greece just won the Miss Universe contest. For once it was kind of nice that Miss United States wasn't among the ten finalists. We forgot to stay up last night to see the photographs taken of the moon in the Ranger 7 lunar probe. They relayed more than 4000 photographs back to earth, the last one half second before impact only nine miles off target on the Sea of Clouds. Tonight we saw the paths of Echo I and II cross overhead. It's nice to live in such a fascinating world. I cut out my plaid shirtwaist dress.
