About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Extension of Suffrage - Tuesday, January 17, 1961

We all went over to the game at Kalona tonight. We got beat by Aquinas of Ft. Madison, but the reserves won in an overtime. It sort of seemed unusual for us all to go some place together. The game was a lot of fun in spite of the fact that we lost. I got an A+ on my Extension of Suffrage research paper, A on my semester test, A on Are Taxes Too High? (never thought I'd pull that one!) and B on my last test. Thus ends Seminar in American Government. I've flunked two straight chemistry "tests" involving the use of the slide rule. I went down to see Mr. Statler last period as he'd issued the invitation, but I "know" everything there is to know!?!

I still have my old Post slide rule if you are still interested in learning how it works.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I think these posts from your past are very interesting, sometimes there's more in what was "not said". I look forward to learning about your journey. I was the first in my family to go to college--I wrote about it in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Getting into College (http://bit.ly/hxAWjn to see some of the books my essays are in)-- so the idea of a "farm girl" on her way to college sounds interesting. Good luck on your writing!

Bill, I'll pass on your offer. Ron, you and Bill have a lot in common. He's very interested in your kitchen remodeling project. Thanks for your comment about my suffrage paper. I wonder what I wrote at that time.
