About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

The Social Clubs Choose Their New Pledges - Saturday, September 16, 1961

I'm a member of the LECs ! It was really quite thrilling to hear the runners come through the dorm yelling for their new pledges. We went on a snake dance around campus and down to Parkville's Main Street. We had individual club picnics. The LECs went out to a farm house. The freshmen had to divide into skit groups. Ours used my Art Linkletter suggestion! Viv, Janet, Judy, Nancy and several other good friends all got in LECs. We made our choices this morning. There was an all-school party tonight. A bunch of us (I was with Bob Grey) had a riot in Hawley lounge. Dale Cunningham sold me all of his paper back world lit books for $2.75!

I am getting confused about all these clubs.... LECs, ACCs, LLCs,PCCs, OACs...I can't keep up! It sounds like you loved college from the moment you got there!

Me too Suzanne! What is an LEC?

Suzanne, I was hoping you would wait until we got home from our trip to ask about Park's social clubs so I could find the correct spelling of some of the names in a yearbook! The LLCs were the Lowell-Lucerne Club. The LECs were the Lancelot-Elaine Club. The ACCs were the Anthony-Cleopatra Club. The OACs were the Orion-Aurora Club. The PCCs were the Parchevard-Calliopean Club.

Park did not have sororities and fraternities so the social clubs took their place.

Ron, now you know that as an LEC I was a member of the Lancelot-Elaine Club. Memory eludes me as to why I became an LEC. Some students got their second choice club after rush week. Or I might have given in to wanting to stick with some peers. We could make a change to a different club after the first semester. At that time I became an LLC.
