About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

Horse Falls on Virginia and Phyllis - Thursday, October 12, 1961

I got a letter from home with school pictures of Mom, Ann and Virginia. I got one from Phyllis a while back. Virginia wrote that she and Phyllis were riding over to sell magazines on Duke and he fell on the road between the two Stouts, pitched them off, and landed on them. They were pretty banged up. I got my pictures back. Three didn't turn out but the ones of Naaman did. I showed them to him at supper and he took the five of them to  see about getting reprints made. Vivien and I spent a quiet, rainy evening at the library. Margie and I visited Nancy Kelley at the infirmary. I gave my speech - haven't heard the criticisms.

I love that 50 years later teachers still get packs of school pictures! :)
Scary news about Ginn and Phyllis - glad they were okay!

Have you had your picture taken this year? I had forgotten about the time Duke fell on my sisters.

What a treasure your diaries are, and now, your blog. Thanks for connecting with me. I feel as though I've found a new friend in journaling.

Mary, I feel the same way. Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving your comment - I will look for more of those from you in the future. Thank you also for your two emails.
