About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

We Go to See the Plaza Lights - Tuesday, December 12, 1961

Tonight a school bus load of us went in to Kansas City to see the Plaza Lights. They are really pretty. Some of them follow the shapes of the tower-like building tops. Judy Cox guided Nancy Huebner, Kathy Gillespie and  me around the stores. Gosh, Karen Bentson and I got the third highest grades in the class on the art test. There were a 93 and 92 (A's) and Karen and I had 91's (A-). In biology we made "universes" - test tube aquariums. Dr. Hamilton said I was "turning green" after asking me if I was trying to asphyxiate the place with the Bunsen burner gas. I imagine I was turning red.

Well Barb, I was starting to worry for you about that art class grade but it sounds like you are doing fine!

I had the same thought as Suzanne that it is so cool that now you live in the Plaza lights that started 50 years ago with a visit.

Yes, I guess I proved with that most recent art class test grade that I could do it if I was determined enough.

And yes - it is special to know that I first saw the Plaza lights that we now enjoy so much 50 years ago.

Clarification: In the top comment, the phrase "that started 50 years ago" is misleading. [Suzanne's thought does not appear here.] At the time the above transcription comment was written in 2011, it would have been the 81st year for the Country Club Plaza lights in Kansas City. Last night my family and I saw the lights turned on for the 89th year. The tradition began in 1930 with a single strand of lights.
