- ~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.
Saw Municipal Band Concert - Wednesday, June 26, 1963
We girls and Betty and Mary went swimming tonight while Mr. Peters went to the meeting he thought was last night. We watched part of the municipal band concert afterwards. Three people have given me things while I have been out getting news - Mr. Kline gave me an ice cream bar, Mr. Schoonover a stick of gum, and now today, David Vanderbilt, a piece of spearmint candy. He's the new McLellan's manager and is very nice. Charlie wrote a nice social event for me - about the Y's Men "Hawaiian" night.

Your Blog reminds of growing up in a small town in Missouri. Thanks for helping me recall the memories of lost events.
Because of its name, I really liked McLellan's. I think I remember correctly that it had a candy counter inside the front door in the middle aisle with a roasted nut section that had a rotating tray with different kind of nuts. When you bought some, they put it in a flat white paper bag. I can still remember the smell--not bad. It seems like it wasn't air conditioned. Hmmm, wonder how faulty my memories are!
Hi Clifford! It is so nice to see your comment about growing up in a small town. Thanks to the index in the 1962 Park College Narva, I see that your and your sister Diane's hometown is Greenfield, Missouri.
Ron, your memories of McLellan's candy and nuts took me down memory lane. It was a nice big "dime" store with all kinds of merchandise.
