- ~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.
A Rubber Snake Should Provide Some Fun - Wednesday, April 4, 1962
This morning I had a nice leisurely sleep. I got up in time to get Daddy some dinner. The afternoon was soon gone by the time I washed dishes, mended my shorts, ironed a blouse, played the piano and read a little. We went in to do the wash after school. I got a real live looking rubber snake at the sports shop that should provide some fun around the dorm. Phyllis and I went to youth fellowship tonight.
Listening to Records in Iowa City, Having Lunch and Going Shopping With Jerolyn - Tuesday, April 3, 1962
Today I went to Iowa City to listen to music records at the University Library. After finding the numbers of the ones I wanted and discovering that the librarian was familiar with Park, I listened to three in the morning. Just as I sat down at Kresge's lunch bar Jerolyn came along and this was her afternoon off. So instead of going back to the music library we had a very nice afternoon visiting and shopping. We hadn't seen each other since August. She works at the University General Hospital now. We went in to hear the Mid-Prairie, Washington and Mt. Pleasant junior high band concert tonight.
My First Time Watching Mom Teach Her Kindergarten Class - Monday, April 2, 1962
I visited kindergarten today. This was the first time I ever really saw Mom teach school. I wrote the round robin letter and one other letter in the teachers lounge while the kids were taking their naps. It seemed funny to be back in the building on a school day for the first time in almost two years and also funny to have the oldest class be the sixth grade. Tonight Phyllis and I went to an honor society meeting but got there too late. We watched the mixed chorus "Roaring 20's Revue" rehearsal. It's real good.
We Girls Don't Play an April Fool's Stunt at Church After All - Sunday, April 1, 1962
Back to the good little old home church again with a chance to meet all of the people. We took the Johnsons to the restaurant in Keota for dinner. The new car is so nice. What a rainy, cold day. It has snowed some both yesterday and today. A long time ago we girls decided that we would hide the notes of Mr. Peters' sermon the day April Fool's Day finally came on Sunday. We didn't hide them. As it was, Virginia played the piano (she's marvelous) and probably would have had a good chance to do it.
Sleeping All Morning, Shopping This Afternoon, Chores This Evening - Saturday, March 31, 1962
I slept all morning (but not until after Phyllis brought me up some Swiss cheese at 4:45). This afternoon we went to town. I had quite a spring shopping spree - green and white plaid suit, aqua dress (they had to undress the window dummy) red and white striped long "twist" blouse, white pleated skirt and tan hopsack tennis shoes. Ann and I went out to do the eggs and get the buckets ready. Grandma and Grandpa are on a trip to Ohio and Virginia. Chores are simple without the cows.
Home Again and We Are Our Usual Laughing Family of Six - Friday, March 30, 1962
(Written Saturday morning) - Home again. The train was just an hour late again. I went in to the station with Liz Ralston, her mother and her grandfather. The anatomy test wasn't too hard. We're our usual laughing family of six again. It doesn't seem possible that I was in Kansas City such a short time ago. An Oskaloosa girl who goes to Central College in MacPherson, Kansas also got off the train at Fairfield.
Religion in Life: John Fry, Presbyterian Life Editor - Thursday, March 29, 1962
One thing for sure, we are certainly taking spring vacation more matter-of-factly than we did Christmas vacation. It doesn't seem possible that it's here. I remember how far away it looked on the year's calendar of events. John Fry, an associate editor of Presbyterian Life, is on campus for Religion and Life Week. He had a good discussion in the lounge tonight and a good assembly speech. I got $33.60 for March through the 26th. Another rainy day following a beautiful one. It's happened at least three times. Now anatomy test preparation.
