About the diary writer

~ About: A 1961-65 Park College Diary ~ As a high school girl and then a college coed in the first half of the 1960s, I wrote nightly entries on the pages of one-year diaries. In January 2010 I began transcribing the entries into a blog and gave each one a title. I grew up on three farms within 30 miles of Iowa City and the University of Iowa with its Iowa Writers' Workshop. As the oldest of four daughters, in my diaries I sometimes referred to my sisters as "the kids" or "the girls." We helped our parents, but we also had good, wholesome fun - a characteristic I took with me to Park. Park is 300 miles southwest of West Chester, Iowa, in Parkville, Missouri, on the Missouri River 10 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri, and across the river from Kansas City, Kansas. In 2000 Park College became Park University. Today Park's flagship campus is in Parkville and there are an additional 41 campus centers across the nation. Park was one of the first educational institutions in the United States to offer online learning. My last post was on May 22, 2018. I may be followed on Twitter @BarbaraMcDWhitt.

LLC Favors Ready to Distribute at 1:00 AM - Sunday, September 30, 1962

This morning I went to church with Judy. This afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00 some of us worked on LLC rush favors in the Herr House old maids' lounge. Margie and I are waiting till 1:00 AM to distribute those to go out to the freshman girls tonight. Chris and I walked around Parkville this evening. (Just had time out for Hawley's third serenade - one by the ACCs and two by freshman boys). The rest of the time I tried to study.

Settled in Hawley's Room 314 - Saturday, September 29, 1962

Tonight Margie and I are settled in Room 314 on Hawley's third floor. It's back side and pink, but we have middle closets this time and on the opposite side of the room. The girls on the floor seem real nice. We started moving this morning, went to Kansas City this afternoon, and finished this evening. Jean Oxborrow, the freshman girl from Humboldt, Iowa, helped me move. It was a hard job - I must have made a dozen trips and she six. Marge, Judy and I went in to Kansas City with Nancy and Fred. We got brown rugs, I got a red and a white half slip, Tweed cologne, a few other things.

Supper at the President's House - Friday, September 28, 1962

The president's supper for the Stylus staff and student council was really nice. Mrs. Morrill had cooked a very nice meal. Our table - I went down with Carol Patterson and Terry Scullin - discussed everything from Hell Week to whiskey flavored tooth paste. Margie, Chris, Mary Anne Higginbotham and I went to the show tonight, "Back Street," not very good. I woke up at 5:30 this morning so got up and studied history. I also skipped religion class - I don't know how much good it did, probably none at all. This is our last night in Herr House - for 18 of us.

Some of Us Volunteer to Return to Hawley - Thursday, September 27, 1962

It's been a hard day - not conducive to studying history. Margie and I ended up volunteering to go to Hawley this morning - and stuck our decision out - though the tension was running high this afternoon at our sophomore meeting at to who would go and who would stay. "Pent House" finally volunteered for half of fourth floor and some of us will fill in on the other floors. This all has really been hard on everybody. It's a relief to have it "settled." It's going to be hard to leave Herr House and hard for the freshmen for us to move in on them. I practically had the run of the Stylus front page. I interviewed Mr. Campanella for two art department stories this morning.

18 Girls Must Agree to Go to Hawley - Wednesday, September 26, 1962

The Hawley move has boiled down to the fact that 18 girls will have to volunteer or Dean White will draw names and say, "you go." Margie, Nancy, Bonnie, Becky, Margaret and I talked to her in her apartment this evening and had almost decided to "volunteer" and try to get a congenial group to go. Then "Pent House" discussed volunteering, then decided not to. Oh, this whole thing is absolutely ridiculous and hard on everybody but everybody. I got a B+ on my French test. Mom sent permission for me to get flu shots so I went over to get one. We had a WRA committee meeting at 4:00 and an upperclass meeting at 7:30.

And Now an A on a Sociology Test - Tuesday, September 23, 1962

This is too much. I made an A (though there were two A+'s) on the sociology test and Mr. Gibson congratulated me in front of the class. He had called the names of the the A+'s before he went over the answers. Then he gave back the papers and mine was the next mentioned. There were three A's besides the two A+'s. This evening in the library I finally wrote out at ten till 9:00 a question for history that was supposed to be in Dr. Urban's box by 9:00. I put notes in the student teachers' boxes about my interviews of them for the Stylus, but Fred said I should wait awhile to write them.

The Only A in Two Psychology Classes - Monday, September 24, 1962

This has certainly been my lucky day. I got the only A on the psychology test. Vivien came back and said that the only A paper was in our section but I didn't think twice about a glimmer of hope. When he called my name and said, "I'd like to single this paper out as the only A," I nearly died. Like winning "Miss America" or something. Then this afternoon I found an invitation to supper at the president's house Friday night! I guess it's for the Stylus staff and student council. I got a C+ on my religion paper.

Some Will Have to Move Back to Hawley - Sunday, September 23, 1962

I really fulfilled my chapel requirement today. I went to Parkville in the morning with Judy and tonight went down to hear Rev. Seamans speak in chapel. A Sunday evening college church service is alright, but we certainly should be having morning services, especially since we now have a college pastor. Another thing has caused a big stir. It seems Hawley, because it was built with government funds, must be filled to capacity, so some twenty sophomore girls are going to have to move back over there. Last spring second floor would have been glad to stay as a floor, but now we feel settled in Herr House.

Air Force Academy Beats Park in Soccer - Saturday, September 22, 1962

This afternoon Barb, Flo and I went down to watch the Air Force Academy play Park in the first home game of the season. It was a good game, but we lost 5-2. Four years ago they beat Park 4-1. I took three pictures. Phyllis and Linda Pence probably wish they could have been here. This was my first college Saturday that I could sleep all morning since I no longer have French class on Saturday. I wrote up my news articles about new faculty members, Bob Young's trip to Japan, and the Cosmopolitan Club.

Helped Prepare for Cosmopolitan Club Meeting - Friday, September 21, 1962

Tonight Carlyn, Becky, Barb and I took charge of getting ready for a Cosmopolitan Club meeting in the Meetin' House. We had a really good turnout of 48 foreign students and several Americans. Carlyn is sort of taking over the re-starting of the club. I took notes for them and will write up an account for the Stylus. I got some other news this afternoon, too. I'm so glad to see the end of this week finally come so I can have a break from studying. The psychology test was "interesting." Today was Judy Jones' birthday. We had popcorn in her honor tonight. It was another rainy and cold day.

Stylus Had a Lot of Feature Articles - Thursday, September 20, 1962

The Stylus looked pretty good tonight - it had a lot of interesting feature articles. In my spare time today I typed my religion paper. Glad I had the foresight to get it written Tuesday morning. The sociology test was almost a snap - only a 20 point quiz. I may have lost a few points but nothing hurting. The last ten of us to finish had to circle our names so he can see if we did better or worse than the others! We learned several new series in modern dance. Wonder how stiff I'll be in the morning. Have to finish reading history and psychology. I can't figure out how I've escaped getting a cold. They're an epidemic around here.

Vivien and Charlie Are Engaged - Wednesday, September 19, 1962

You make yourself go forth. You tell yourself you'll do it. And you look forward to Saturday morning when you can sleep all morning because, luckily, the French test isn't till Tuesday. You remain optimistic although there is a strong desire to be pessimistic. I have a soc. test tomorrow. But I'll also have to type my religion paper, do my French and history assignments, read three chapters in psychology and study for the test - for Friday. Carol didn't use my article on the Language Institute - or at least I saw nothing of it when Regina and I read proof tonight. All of these are my responsibilities. Vivien and Charlie are engaged. Such is life.

English Language Institute Director - Tuesday, September 18, 1962

That I haven't even begun a long French assignment is momentarily beside the point. At least I have an extra hour to work on it since she has changed our French class (for part of us) for the second time - from 9:00 TTHS to 1:00 MWF to 2:00 MWF. I also have a French test, sociology test, and psychology test this week and a religion "paper" due on Friday. This afternoon after phys ed I interviewed the director of the English Language Institute and tonight wrote hurriedly and took down to Carol at the print shop what proved to be a quite long article. Was she ever glad to see me. She assigned it to me at 2:30.

Courses Are So Interesting - Monday, September 17,1962

We had a history quiz this morning. I had a feeling we might but wasn't really ready in spite of the fact. We had to write on "the principal Colonial objections to the Townsend Acts." I just didn't have any luck getting news this week that had been assigned to me. Everyone wants to hold their news till later. I read psychology in the library this afternoon and tonight. My courses are so interesting - I hope I can do them justice. We had a house meeting tonight.

To Church in Parkville This Morning - Sunday, September 16, 1962

This morning I went to church with Nancy and Carlyn. I like the minister, Jerry Belt. (His name's a lot like the Wellman Baptist minister - Jerry Beltz - who went to Korea.) Another of my little worlds was shattered today - as if I should be idealistic. I walked up to Alfalfa Point with Chris Hayward, a freshman farm girl from Ohio, and Dick Peeke and two other guys were up there in a sports car drinking beer. But then I got to thinking such is life and maybe I'm getting into more of the true college spirit. I've been making myself conform to a "sheltered" life but have been opening up - there's even more illegitimacy in the Bible than I thought. I just read about it for Religion 101.

Whole Class Gets "Outstanding Frosh" Award - Saturday, September 15, 1962

Hell Week was really good this year. We did have some faculty objections , but as students we "got back at them" through several things said at frosh court. For instance, the goon squad gave the "four outstanding frosh" award to the whole freshman class because of the way they had taken the opposition. Kathy was "found guilty" of "importing sugar into America." Then there was "Leaky Peekey" (Brian Peeke), etc. I went with Barb Page to the softball game. The upperclass won. Jim Peeke was sitting on a bench by Mackay alone this morning when I came out. I've been waiting for a "lifetime" for a chance like that, and then I didn't stop to talk to him. Oh, Barbara McDowell, will you ever learn?

Watching the Goon Squad at 4:00 This Morning - Friday, September 14, 1962

Margie and I had our alarms set for 4:00 to get up and watch the goon squad raid the Hawley girls. At five till 4:00 I was awake and heard several girls paddle down the hall and also heard two people walk past outside. I got over to the window just in time to see the disappearing shadows of what were probably two goon hats. We watched the 4:00 sharp firecrackers and screaming arrival and saw them walk around the parking lot. It was interesting to observe this time (memories!), see the different Hawley lights blink on. This afternoon was the beanie ceremony and tug-of-war. It's all just like last year. Jim Hunter, the one I went to the spring festival dance with, did an excellent job working for us. I will have to try to get Kathy's work in. Margie, Nancy and I saw "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" tonight.

Hell Week is Officially Underway - Thursday, September 13, 1962

Hell Week began tonight. This year we watched the entry of the goon squad into Upper Commons as upperclassmen. The freshmen this year are more organized (or seem to be) than we were. The goons are still a terrible sight! We had an upperclass meeting at 4:00 in Alumni while the freshmen had theirs in the chapel. The Stylus looked really good. They only had room for one of my articles, and that was reduced to the first paragraph. I read history in the library tonight. Hope I can handle Urban's probable "questions" tomorrow! They've dropped Commons dress regulations except for Wednesday night and Sunday noon! Dr. Hampl wants some of us to meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1:00 for French. That's going to unbalance my schedule!! Blah!

Found a $5 Bill on the Copley Stairs - Wednesday, September 12, 1962

Tonight Regina and I went down to the print shop to read proof for the Stylus. We were supposed to do it this afternoon, but the print shop didn't have the proof ready. Carol's laying the paper out reminded me of the hours I used to spend doing that for the high school paper. On our way back from the print shop this afternoon I found a $5 bill on the Copley stairs. I had it announced in Commons. I guess the loser will have to tell me the nature of the loss. I almost wish I hadn't found it - it gave me a queasy feeling to see five whole dollars lying there. I've never been in this kind of position before.

Am Liking Psychology and Sociology - Tuesday, September 11, 1962

So far I've managed to keep at the studies - and I'd better. I accomplished a lot more tonight than I thought I was going to. Last night Hawley stole Deering's fire hydrant and tonight Herr House stole it from Hawley. This should prove interesting. We were informed that we'd be stiff and sore tomorrow from modern dance. Bonnie Null is letting me wear her leotard for the class. We had a meeting about phys ed requirements and intramurals. My courses are setting me to thinking psychologically and sociologically.

Herr House Officers Are Elected - Monday, September 10, 1962

We are all concentrating on studies - typical for the first of the year - but most of us have challenging schedules for that matter. We had a house meeting tonight at 11:00 so I didn't get all of my sociology read - probably wouldn't have anyway. We elected officers. Regina Font for social chairman was the only sophomore. I went with Nancy to the International Relations Club (IRC) this afternoon. Carol Patterson, the Stylus editor, said I did a good job with the news I wrote. Great old college. Some of the freshmen guys are parading around outside "announcing Hell Week" and Herr House has just become an uproar. Must investigate!

We Went to Parkville Presbyterian Church - Sunday, September 9, 1962

I went with Margaret McElwain and Barb Page to the Parkville Presbyterian Church this morning. Hal Henderson gave us a ride from the gym road on and brought us back afterwards. They aren't having Sunday morning chapel services any more but are on Sunday evenings. The idea is to get everyone to go to church in Parkville or nearby. This afternoon I read psychology, this evening religion, and got my Stylus articles ready for Carol.

Thought of First Arrival at Park - Saturday, September 8, 1962

A bunch of us watched the Miss America pageant on the J.R. TV tonight. Miss Ohio won. Judy Percival watched with us a year ago tonight in our motel room in Riverside. At 4:30 today, I happened to think of, almost to the minute, my first arrival at Park a year ago today, Saturday. It's been the greatest year. I took my wash down to the Laundromat this morning and read history while I waited for it. Herr House doesn't have a washer right now. After French I "covered" the Mackay art exhibit for the Stylus. I studied this afternoon.

Interesting Classes, Good Professors - Friday, September 7, 1962

Our room here is so nice. It's so much more homey and conducive to study than Hawley was. I will have a heavy schedule this semester, but I certainly have some interesting classes. Good professors, too. I'm glad to have Dr. Johnson's religion course. Margie, Nancy and I went to the free movie, "The Mark," an English film about a mental patient, tonight. Margie had Phil come along. This afternoon I covered my Stylus "beat" and got a little news. I had to go to the registrar's, public relations and president's offices and get the library and Commons hours.

470 Are Here This Fall - Thursday, September 6, 1962

My sociology class and modern dance sound real good. I also had French class today. I was doing French tonight (could surprisingly remember a little bit) when Nancy came in - later Judy, and later Marge, so the rest of the evening centered around a discussion about Park College and "sophomore slump." I'm feeling pretty good but it was interesting to get some gripes off our chests anyway. Nancy was really feeling in the dumps. Sociology is with Mr. Gibson, modern dance with Mrs. Dorsey who has studied it under one of New York's leading teachers. We only have about 470 here this year. Opening convocation was this morning.

Arranging for Book Purchases - Wednesday, September 5, 1962

There wasn't anything going on for upperclassmen today. We slept till 9:30 when Karen Bentson woke us up to ask me if I'd like to go together with her to buy the religion book. I guess I will since we're not supposed to have to use it much. I got one of the sociology books secondhand and have the other books I need spoken for. This afternoon Nancy, Margie and I walked around Parkville and had Cokes at the drug store. The Beers folksinging team that was here last year was in the Meetin' House tonight.

Remaining Second Floor Gang Had a Party - Tuesday, September 4, 1962

The entire remaining second floor gang got together tonight down in Carolyn and Karen's room for the neatest party - decorations and food (simple) included. After several of them left Judy and Jan came over from Hawley. We left finally at 1:30. Registration was today. I'm taking French, religion, psychology, sociology and American history. Oh yes, and modern dance and bowling for gym. There was a square dance tonight and "booths" for the freshmen sponsored by the social clubs. Oh, life! College - the greatest!

Feeling Rushed About Requirements - Monday, September 3, 1962

During the summer of 1962 the Park College administration made the decision to change the academic calendar from two 18-week semesters to three 15-week trimesters per year. The summer trimester will be optional rather than required. This seems like a Saturday night the way everyone is carrying on. We're going to feel rushed to get in upperclass program requirements the way it sounds. We learned a few thoughts from Dean Hulbert at the upperclass meeting this afternoon.

Our Room is a Pretty Shade of Green - Sunday, September 2, 1962

Things look pretty pretty good at Park this year. It's so much fun to "invade" Herr House as sophomores. (The upperclass girls probably think we're a pretty chattery bunch!) The folks got me here at 10:00 and left to go home by way of Tarkio College at 10:45. Our room was painted a lovely shade of green (it had been a drab beige). My pole lamp room divider, bulletin board, Marge's cafe curtains and our room arrangement look good. I got "into things" right away - Becky and I stapled papers in the registrar's office for an hour and a half this afternoon. Vivien is rooming with Janet - Marge's original roommate!

We Are Staying in Waverly, Missouri Tonight - Saturday, September 1, 1962

We have a nice motel in Waverly, Missouri overlooking the good old Missouri River tonight. We're about 50 miles east of Independence. It will be fun to come in to Kansas City from this side. We came down through Marshall so Phyllis could see Missouri Valley College. She seems to like it pretty well. Maybe she'll decide to come and we'll be 80 miles apart next year. We left home at 11:30 this morning after packing the trunk of the car once again - we always manage somehow to get all my junk in!
